In Q3 2015, slaughter of hogs and pigs and of birds hits records, whereas cattle slaughter falls

The slaughter of hogs and pigs in Brazil in the 3rd quarter of 2015 was of 10.18 million head, registering a record since the beginning of the survey, in 1997. This figure represents increases of 5.1% over the 2nd quarter of 2015 and of 5.5% against the 3rd quarter of 2014. The slaughter of chicken, with 1,50 billion head, was also the greatest since 1997, presenting increases of 7.1% in relation to the 2nd quarter of 2015 and of 6.9% in comparison with the same period of 2014. On the other hand, cattle slaughter (7.56 million head) registered drops of 0.9% over the 2nd quarter of 2015 and of 10.8% over the 3rd quarter of 2014.

The production of hen eggs registered a new record with 749.96 million dozens, representing increases of 3.9% over the 2nd quarter of 2015 and of 4.1% over the 3rd quarter of 2014. The purchase of raw milk was of 5.98 billion liters, with increase of 6.0% over the 2nd quarter of 2015 and a drop of 3.9% in relation to the 3rd quarter of 2014. The acquisition of entire pieces of cattle rawhide was of 8,09 million pieces, 0.3% higher than in the previous quarter and a drop of 12.2% over the 3rd quarter of 2014.

Cattle slaughter stays at 7.56 million and falls 10.8% over Q3 2014

In the 3rd quarter of 2015, 7.56 million cattle head under some sort of sanitary inspection were slaughtered. This quantity was 0.9% lower than the one registered in the previous quarter (7.62 million head) and 10.8% lower than the one seen in the 3rd quarter of 2014 (8.47 million head).

The cumulative weight of carcasses in the 3rd quarter of 2015 (1.87 million metric tons) was 1.4% bigger than in the previous quarter (1.85 million metric tons) and 8.3% lower than the one registered in the 3rd quarter of 2014 (2.04 million metric tons).

At the national level, the slaughter of 913.87 thousand cattle head less in the 3rd quarter of 2015, in relation to the same period of the previous year, was leveraged by reductions in the slaughter in 22 of the 27 Federation Units. The main drops occurred in: São Paulo (-191.21 thousand head), Mato Grosso (-160.58 thousand head), Minas Gerais (-131.11 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (-116.65 thousand head), Paraná (-76.84 thousand head), Bahia (-66.52 thousand head), Goiás (-60.49 thousand head) and Rondônia (-48.98 thousand head). Part of these drops were offset by increases in: Tocantins (+17.72 thousand head), Santa Catarina (+6.26 thousand head), Rio de Janeiro (+2.12 thousand head), Rio Grande do Norte (+0.41 thousand head) and the Federal District (+0.14 thousand head). In the FU ranking, Mato Grosso keeps leading cattle slaughter with a wide margin, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás.

With 10.18 million head, slaughter of hogs and pigs grows 5.5% over Q3 2014

In the 3rd quarter of 2015, 10.18 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered, representing an increase of 5.1% in relation to the previous quarter and of 5.5% over the same period in 2014. This is a record since the beginning of the survey in 1997. In the 3rd quarter of 2015, the cumulative weight of the carcasses reached 896.38 thousand metric tone, representing increases of 4.1% over the previous quarter and of 7.5% against the same period in 2014.

The South Region accounted for 66.6% of the overall slaughter of hogs and pigs in the 3rd quarter of 2015, followed by the Southeast (18.2%), the Central-West (14.0%), the Northeast (1.1%) and the North Region (0.1%). In the comparison between the 3rd quarters of 2015/2014, the South Region enhanced its contribution to the national slaughter by 0.5 percentage points, due to the increment of 6.2% in the volume of slaughtered head in Santa Catarina and in Paraná. The Southeast Region reduced its level of contribution by 0.5 p.p., despite the fact all of its states registered a positive performance, resulting in a rise of 2.8% in the number of slaughtered head. The Central-West Region lost 0.1 p.p. of contribution, despite the increment of 4.5% in the number of hogs and pigs slaughtered, which was distributed all over its states.

Chicken slaughter grows 6.9% over Q3 2014

In the 3rd quarter of 2015, 1.50 billion chicken head were slaughtered, establishing a new record level in the time series started in 1997. This figure represented rises of 7.1% over the last quarter and of 6.9% in the comparison with the same period in 2014. The cumulative weight of carcasses was of 3.38 million metric tons in the 3rd quarter of 2015. This result represented increases of 3.3% over the previous quarter and of 5.1% against the same period in 2014.

The South Region accounted for 60.2% of the overall chicken slaughter in the 3rd quarter of 2015, followed by the Southeast (19.2%), the Central-West (15.0%), the Northeast (3.8%) and the North Region (1.8%). In the comparison among the 3rd quarters of 2015/2014, the South Region reduced its contribution in the national slaughter by 1.0 p.p., even with the increase of 5.2% in the amount of chicken head slaughtered, mainly due to the growth of the slaughter in Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul. The Southeast Region, with a 7.0% increase in the number of chicken head slaughtered, due o the positive performance of all its sates, remained stable in terms of contribution to the overall aggregate. In the Central-West Region, the growth of the slaughter in all the states increased the number of slaughtered heads by 10.0% and its contribution to the national aggregate by 0.5 p.p.

With more than 749 million dozens, the production of eggs goes on boosting

In the 3rd quarter of 2015, the production of hen eggs was of 749.96 million dozens, reaching the highest level of the series started in 1987. This figure was 3.9% higher than that of the previous quarter and 4.1% above that of the 3rd quarter of 2014.

In the comparison with the same period of 2014, all Major Regions presented increase in the production of hen eggs, especially the South (9.3%), a rise which was leveraged by Paraná (11.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.9%) and also in Santa Catarina (6.3%). Among the main producing states, reduction occurred just in Minas Gerais (-2.5%).

Purchase of milk falls 3.9% over Q3 2014

In the 3rd quarter of 2015, 5.98 billion liters of milk were purchased by milk processing industries, an increase of 6.0% over the 2nd quarter of 2015 and an increase of 3.9% over the 3rd quarter of 2014.

In regional terms, the comparison among the 3rd quarters of 2015/2014 caused decrease in the purchase of milk in all Major Regions. Important absolute decreases were seen in the South of the country (-4.2%), especially in Paraná (-6.7%) and in Santa Catarina (-5.0%), although they occurred also in Rio Grande do Sul (-1.7%). In the Central-West Region there was decrease of 9.1%, influenced by Goiás (-9.3%) and Mato Grosso (-13.3%). In the North the decrease was of 13.9%, recorded, mainly in Pará (-24.0%) and in Rondônia (-9.7%), states with the highest regional weights. In the Northeast the drop in the acquisition of milk was of 2.5% and the only states without decrease were Pernambuco, Alagoas e Sergipe.

Purchase of rawhide falls 12.2% over Q3 2014

The acquisition of rawhides was of 8.09 million units in the 3rd quarter of 2015. This figure was 0.3% higher than that of the previous quarter and 12.2% below that of the 3rd quarter of 2014. As to the rawhide origin, the greatest part came from slaughterhouses and cold stores, followed by units of services rendered, accounting together for 89.2% of the total seen in the period.

The reduction of 1.12 million whole rawhide pieces, at national level, in the comparison of the 3rd quarters of 2015/2014, was leveraged by reduction in the acquisitions of cattle hides in 17 of the 20 Federation Units. The main absolute drops were registered in: Paraná (-282.57 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso (-218.96 thousand pieces), Rio Grande do Sul (-194.81 thousand pieces), Minas Gerais (-164.34 thousand pieces), Pará (-105.71 thousand pieces), Bahia (-83.37 thousand pieces), São Paulo (-68.62 thousand pieces) and Goiás (-64.86 thousand pieces). Part of these drops was offset by increases in: Rondônia (+129.49 thousand pieces), Tocantins (+120.32 thousand pieces) and Roraima (+10.01 thousand pieces). In the ranking of the Federation Units, Mato Grosso still leads with a wide margin the receiving of hides by tanneries, followed by São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul.
