In April, IPCA stays at 0.67%

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) for April was 0.67%, 0.21 percentage points (p.p.) below the rate of 0.88% recorded in March. In the year, the IPCA accumulated an increase of 2.60% and, in the last 12 months, the index stayed at 4.39%, above the rate of 4.14% of the immediately previous 12 months. In April 2025, the change had been 0.43%.

The greatest change and impact were recorded in the group of food and beverages (1.34% and 0.29 p.p.), followed by Health and personal care (1.16% and 0.16 p.p.). Together, the two groups represented approximately 67% of the month's result. The other groups showed changes below 1.00%, ranging between 0.06% observed in Transportation and in Education, and 0.65% in Household articles.

The group of Food and beverages changed 1.34% in April, accumulating an increase of 3.44% in the first four months of 2026. Food at home recorded a change of 1.64%, influenced by increases in carrot (26.63%), long-life milk (13.66%), onion (11.76%), tomatoes (6.13%) and meat (1.59%). On the dropping side, the highlights were ground coffee (-2.30%) and chicken pieces (-2.14%). Food away from home recorded an increase of 0.59%, with snacks rising from 0.89% in March to 0.71% in April and meals, from 0.49% to 0.54%, in the same period.

In Health and personal care (1.16%) the highlights were pharmaceuticals (1.77%), after the authorization of an adjustment of up to 3.81% in medicine prices on April 1st, and personal hygiene items (1.57%), with emphasis on perfume (1.94%).

In the group of Housing, the change of 0.63% in April was influenced by bottled gas, with an increase of 3.74%, and by residential electricity (0.72%), which incorporates the following adjustments: 6.92% and 14.66% in concessionaires in Rio de Janeiro (4.83%), both effective on March 15th; 12.36% in Campo Grande (2.27%), as of April 24; 4.78% in Salvador (2.23%), since April 22; 3.86% in Recife (1.05%), in effect since April 29; 5.91% in Aracaju (0.89%), and 5.59% in Fortaleza (0.44%), both as of April 22. Still in Housing, water and sewage fees (0.22%) reflects the 4.80% increase in the tariffs in Goiânia (4.80%), as of April 1st.

The group of Transportation slowed down from March (1.64%) to April (0.06%), mainly due to the 14.45% drop in the sub-item airfare. Coupled with it, urban bus changed -1.13%, given the appropriation of free fares or fare reductions on Sundays in São Paulo (1.10%) and Salvador (0.55%) and also on holidays, in Fortaleza (-0.57%), Vitória(-0.60%),  Curitiba (-3.05%), Brasília (-6.58%), Belém (-6.60%) and Belo Horizonte (-6.72%). The 0.38% reduction in subway was due to the incorporation of free fares on Sundays and holidays in Brasília (-6.58%).

On the rising side in the group of Transportation, the highlights are fuels with a 1.80% change. Gasoline decelerated from March (4.59%) to April (1.86%), still positioning itself as the main individual impact on the month's index (0.10 p.p.). Also noteworthy are the increases in diesel fuel, 4.46%, and in ethanol (0.62%). Vehicular gas fell 1.24%. In intercity bus (0.55%) there is an increase of 8.18% in the fares in Porto Alegre (3.52%), since April 8, and the sub-item taxi (0.26%) reflects the adjustment of 7.72% in Recife (5.81%), in force since February 12, not previously captured.

Regarding regional indices, the biggest change occurred in Goiânia (1.12%), influenced by the increase in gasoline (5.77%) and water and sewage fees (4.80%). The smallest change occurred in Brasília (0.16%), due to the decline in airfare (-10.88%) and gasoline (-1.03%).

IPCA has been calculated by the IBGE since 1980. It refers to households with monthly income of 1 to 40 minimum wages, whatever the source. It encompasses ten metropolitan areas in Brazil, besides the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís, Aracaju and Brasília. To calculate the index for the month, the prices collected in the period from April 1, 2026 to April 30, 2026 (reference) were compared with the prices in force in the period from March 4, 2026 to March 31, 2026 (base).

INPC stays at 0.81% in April

The National Consumer Price Index - INPC increased 0.81% in April, 0.10 p.p. below the result observed in March (0.91%). In the year, the INPC accumulated an increase of 2.70% and, from the perspective of the last 12 months, the index stood at 4.11%, above the rate of 3.77% of the immediately previous 12 months. In April 2025, the rate had been 0.48%.

Food products decelerated from March (1.65%) to April (1.37%). The change in non-food items went from 0.67% in March to 0.63% in April.

As for regional indexes, the biggest change occurred in São Luis (1.16%), influenced by the increase in bottled gas (7.03%) and in personal hygiene articles (2.23%). The smallest change occurred in Brasília (0.09%), due to the decline in airfare (-10.88%) and urban bus (-6.58%).
