Retail sales hit -0.1% in June

In June 2025, the volume of retail sales changed by -0.1% from May, in the seasonally adjusted series, and the quarterly moving average was -0.3%. Against June 2024, retail sales changed by 0.3%. In the first half of the year, retail sales had a cumulative increase of 1.8% and the cumulative increase over the last 12 months was 2.7%.

In extended retail, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, and construction material, sales volume fell 2.5% in June. The moving average showed a 1.4% drop. Against the same period in 2024, there was a 3.0% increase. In the first half of the year, extended retail had a cumulative increase of 0.5%. The 12-month cumulative growth was 2.0%.
From May to June 2025, in the seasonally adjusted series, there were negative changes in volume of sales volume of five of the eight retail trade activities: Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-2.7%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-1.5%), Furniture and household appliances (-1.2%), Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (-0.9%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.5%). Other personal and household articles (1.0%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (0.5%) and Fuels and lubricants (0.3%) recorded positive results.
In extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces fell 1.8%, as did Construction material, with a fall of 2.6% between May and June 2025.

Four of the eight activities recorded positive results against June 2024
Against the same month a year ago, there was a balance between positive and negative results. The activities Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (6.4%), Other personal and household articles (2,0%), Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (1.9%) and Office, computer and communication material and equipment (0.6%) recorded positive results. On the other hand, Furniture and household appliances (-0.4%), Hypermarkets and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.5%), Books, newspapers and stationery (-1.2%) and Fuels and lubricants (-1.3%) recorded negative results.
The sector of Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear increased, in volume of sales, 6.4% from June 2024, biggest increase among the eleven sectors surveyed. The group comes from a series of 14 non-negative results, once the latest negative figure was observed in April 2024 (-3.7%). The sector also accounted for the main contribution to the overall retail trade rate, resulting in 0.,4 p.p. to the total of retail trade (0.3%). The first half of 2025 had cumulative increases of 5.5% against the same period in 2024, having kept on an upward trend, aligned with the result of balances of big companies of this activity, which indicates increase due to prices, launch of collections and operational effectiveness.

Other personal and household articles, which includes department stores, glasses shops, jewelry stores, sporting goods stores, toy stores and others, recorded, in the inerannual indicator, a 2.0% sales increase after falling -0.3% in May. In June, the sector accounted for the second-biggest influence on the retail sector's total contributions, adding 0.2 percentage points to the 0.3% year-over-year indicator. This brings the sector's cumulative growth to 2.1% in the first half of 2025, the same level of cumulative gains up to May (2.1%). Against the last twelve months, the result up to June 2025 (4.4%) was the least significant positive one since October 2024 (3.5%).
Pharmaceuticals, medical and othopedic articles and toiletries recorded a 1.9% increase in sales compared to June 2024, the twenty-eighth consecutive month of increase. However, the year-over-year comparison for June 2025 was the smallest in this positive series. Furthermore, the sector made the second-biggest positive contribution to retail in June, along with Other personal and household articles, adding 0.2 percentage points to the total of 0.3%. In the first half of 2025, activity had a cumulative increase of 3.4%, a result at the same level as three months ago, indicating stability in the pace of gains. Over the last twelve months, the scenario has been a loss of pace: the 5.1% figure through June is the lowest since December 2023, when it registered 4.6%.
Office, computer and communication material and equipment saw sales increase by 0.6%, the second consecutive month of increase (4.7% in May). Despite two consecutive increases in the year-over-year indicator, the sector ended the first half of 2024 with cumulative losses (-0.7%), although the path of recent months represents a recovery (-2.4% up to April and -1.0% up to May). The cumulative losses for the last 12 months are also recorded: -1.1% up to June.
In the case of Furniture and household appliances, the sector saw a -0.4% sales change from June 2024, the first negative result since September 2024 (-0.2%). Compared to the year-to-date growth rate through June, from 4.9% through May to 4.0% in the first half of 2025, activity shows a slowdown in growth. In terms of cumulative results over the last twelve months, the scenario is also one of deceleration: 5.4% until May to 4.8% until June 2025.
Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages, and tobacco sector, with the release of data for June 2025, reverses two consecutive months of increase: 7.3% in April and 0.5% in May. This activity exerted the greatest negative impact among all eight retail sectors: -0.3 percentage points of the 0.3% total growth. In the first half of 2025, the sector recorded a cumulative increase of 1.3%, below the cumulative level up to May (1.7%). The 12-month cumulative growth has been increasing, but decelerating: the indicator has been declining since December 2024, when it was 4.6%, having reached 2.3% up to June.
The year-over-year result for Books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery was negative, at -1.2% in June 2025 against same montha year ago, after growing 3.1% in May. Over the past twenty-nine months, the only months to record positive growth were April 2024 (2.4%) and May 2025 (3.1%). In the first half of the year, the cumulative loss was 2.7%, reflecting a structural trend of loss of market share to digital media and the consequent migration of revenue to other activities. Over the past twelve months, the result has also been a loss: -5.0% up to June.
Fuels and lubricants recorded a 1.3% drop in sales compared to June 2024, the third consecutive negative result in the volume indicator. In the year-over-year indicator, this activity had the second-biggest negative contribution to the composition of sectoral contributions: -0.2 percentage points. In the first six months of 2025, the sector has a cumulative drop of 0.2% from the same period in 2024, indicating gains close to stability. In the last twelve months, the activity recorded losses: -0.6% through June.
In extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces fell 6.7% in sales from June 2024, reversing the positive result recorded in the previous month (5.3%). This sector contributed -1.3 percentage points to the -3.0% variation in expanded retail in June 2025, the second-largest negative result among the eleven activities surveyed. In the year, the sector had a cumulative result of 0.9% against the same period in the previous year, the lowest result of 2025. In terms of cumulative results in the last twelve months, going from 7.2% until May to 6.0% until June, the sector also showed a slowdown in intensity of increase.

A atividade de Material de construção foi negativo em 3,6%, invertendo resultado positivo de maio (5,1%). Nos últimos meses a trajetória do indicador interanual em volume da atividade vem experienciando inversões frequentes de sinal: +5,0% em março; -2,7% em abril; 5,1% em maio; e -3,6% nas vendas de junho de 2025 frente a junho de 2024. No ano o setor acumula 2,7% de crescimento, abaixo do patamar de ganhos registrado até maio (4,1%). No acumulado nos últimos doze meses há manutenção do patamar de ganhos nas últimas três leituras: 5,2% até abril, 5,7% até maio e 5,1% até junho.
No caso do Atacado especializado em produtos alimentícios, bebidas e fumo alcançou o décimo primeiro mês consecutivo de queda na comparação interanual, sendo o mês de junho o mais intenso de 2025: -10,3% em janeiro, -6,6% em fevereiro, -3,8% em março; -2,4% em abril; -5,1% em maio; e -11,0% em junho. O setor exerceu a principal influência no campo negativo para o cálculo do varejo ampliado, somando -1,5 p.p. ao total de -3,0%. Com isso, o primeiro semestre de 2025 acumula perdas de 6,5%, mais intensas que o resultado até maio (-5,7%). Na leitura dos últimos doze meses, o acumulado até junho fechou em -7,1%.
Comércio varejista teve taxas negativas em 14 das 27 unidades da federação
Na passagem de maio para junho de 2025, na série com ajuste sazonal, o comércio varejista teve predominância de resultados negativos, atingindo 14 das 27 Unidades da Federação, com destaque para: Tocantins (-4,1%), Piauí (-3,2%) e Amapá (-2,6%). Por outro lado, pressionando positivamente, figuram 11 das 27 Unidades da Federação, com destaque para: Paraná (2,6%), Roraima (2,2%) e Santa Catarina (1,1%). Amazonas e Espírito Santo apresentaram estabilidade (0,0%) na passagem de maio para junho.
Para a mesma comparação, no comércio varejista ampliado, a variação entre maio e junho de 2025 teve resultados negativos em 20 das 27 Unidades da Federação, com destaque para São Paulo (-4,3%), Distrito Federal (-3,0%) e Mato Grosso (-2,7%). Por outro lado, pressionando positivamente, figuram 7 das 27 das Unidades da Federação, com destaques para: Goiás (2,1%), Espírito Santo (1,3%) e Mato Grosso do Sul (1,2%),
Frente a junho de 2024, a variação das vendas no comércio varejista, no corrente mês, teve predominância de resultados positivos, 19 das 27 Unidades da Federação, com destaque para: Mato Grosso (4,6%), Alagoas (4,0%) e Paraíba (3,6%). Por outro lado, pressionando negativamente, figuram 8 das 27 Unidades da Federação, com destaque para: Tocantins (-8,9%), Rio de Janeiro (-2,8%) e Rio Grande do Sul (-2,2%).
No comércio varejista ampliado, a variação entre junho de 2025 e junho de 2024 teve predomínio de resultados negativos, 16 das 27 Unidades da Federação, com destaque para: Rio Grande do Sul (-5,7%), Maranhão (-5,1%) e Paraná (-4,6%). Por outro lado, pressionando positivamente, figuram 10 das 27 Unidades da Federação, com destaque para: Roraima (3,9%), Tocantins (3,2%) e Amapá (2,5%).
