* Seasonally-adjusted series

In May 2025, while national industrial production fell 0.5% from  the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, nine of the 15 areas surveyed recorded negative rates. The sharpest drops were in Mato Grosso (-7.0%), Bahia (-3.7%), and Amazonas (-3.3%), with the first location having a cumulative loss of 8.9% in two consecutive months of declining production; the second interrupting two consecutive months of positive results, a period iwith cumulative expansion of 2.3%; and the last one intensifying the decline observed in April (-1.3%).

In Minas Gerais (-1.9%), Northeast Region (-1.3%), Goiás (-1.1%), São Paulo (-0.8%) and Pernambuco (-0.6%) there were also drops above the national average (-0.5%), while Santa Catarina (-0.2%) completed the set of areas with negative indexes in May 2025. On the other hand, Espírito Santo (16.2%) recorded a double-digit growth and the highest increase this month, thus marking the most intense expansion since January 2023 (24.2%). This month's result eliminated the 2.2% drop observed in the previous month. Ceará (3.5%), Rio de Janeiro (2.0%), Paraná (1.3%), Pará (0.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (0.2%) also recorded positive results in May 2025.

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average for the industry overall recorded a positive change of 0.2% in the quarter ended May 2025 against the previous month and remained on the upward trend observed since February 2025. In regional terms, in the same comparison, nine of the fifteen areas surveyed showed positive rates in that month, mainly in Espírito Santo (6.8%), Pernambuco (5.6%), Rio de Janeiro (1.8%), and Pará (1.6%). On the other hand, Mato Grosso (-2.7%) showed the biggest drop in May 2025.

Against May 2024, the industrial sector expanded by 3.3% in May 2025, with positive results in eleven of the eighteen areas surveyed. It is worth noting that May 2025 (21 days) had the same number of business days as May in the previous year (21).

In May, Rio Grande do Sul (29.1%) and Espírito Santo (23.9%) recorded double-digit increases, the most pronounced in that month, driven mainly by the positive behavior of the sectors of chemicals (mineral or chemical fertilizers of NPK formulas, unsaturated ethylene, polypropylene, unsaturated propylene and high and low density polyethylene), food products (breads, cakes, bagasse and bran from soybean oil extraction, frozen poultry meat and offal, feed and sausage or salami products and other pork preparations), machinery and equipment (agricultural tractors, harvesting machines, seeders, planters or fertilizer spreaders, parts and pieces for hand-held chain saws and hydraulic tools with non-electric motors for hand-held use), tobacco products (processed tobacco), leather goods, travel articles and footwear (leather and synthetic footwear – both for women) and motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (car pieces, cars and bus bodies), in the former area; and mining and quarrying industries (pelletized or sintered iron ores, crude petroleum oils and natural gas), in the latter.

Rio Grande do Sul's result in May was largely influenced by the low comparison basis, since in May 2024, the local production sector fell by 22.9%, due to the heavy rains that occurred in the state. Paraná (8.9%), Pará (8.3%), Rio de Janeiro (7.1%), Minas Gerais (4.7%), Ceará (4.3%) and Santa Catarina (3.7%) also showed positive rates above the national average (3.3%), while Amazonas (1.9%), Goiás (1.3%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (0.9%) completed the set of areas with production increase in the monthly index for May 2025.

On the other hand, Rio Grande do Norte (-16.2%) and Mato Grosso (-11.5%) recorded double-digit drops and the most intense in the month, driven by the activities of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel oil), in the former area; and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (ethyl alcohol), in the latter. Bahia (-7.3%), Pernambuco (-4.5%), Northeast Region (-3.7%), São Paulo (-1.3%) and Maranhão (-1.3%) also showed negative results in the monthly index for May 2025.

As for cumulative index in the year, against the same period a year ago, the industrial sector grew 1.8%, with positive results in nine of the eighteen areas surveyed. Pará (9.6%) and Paraná (5.7%) recorded the biggest increases in the cumulative index for the first five months of the year, driven largely by activities in the mining and quarrying industries (manganese, copper, and iron ore – raw or processed) and basic metals (carbon steel rebar) in the former; and motor vehicles, trailers, and bodies (cars and car pieces), coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel fuel, automotive gasoline, and aviation kerosene), electrical machinery, appliances, and materials (circuit breakers, household appliances, and refrigerators or freezers for home use), and chemicals (herbicides and insecticides – both for agricultural use, urea, mineral or chemical fertilizers with NPK formulas, and deodorants) in the latter.

Santa Catarina (4.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (4.1%) also recorded growth rates above the national average (1.8%), while Rio de Janeiro (1.7%), Minas Gerais (1.7%), Goiás (1.1%), Bahia (0.6%), and Espírito Santo (0.3%) rounded out the list of areas with production growth in the cuulative index in the year.

On the other hand, Rio Grande do Norte (-17.8%) and Pernambuco (-13.8%) recorded double-digit drops, the sharpest in the year-to-date index between January and May 2025, driven primarily by the negative performance of the coke, petroleum products, and biofuels (automotive gasoline and diesel) industries in the former; and coke, petroleum products, and biofuels (diesel and liquefied petroleum gas) in the latter. Maranhão (-5.6%), Northeast Region (-3.2%), Mato Grosso do Sul (-2.3%), Mato Grosso (-1.7%), Amazonas (-0.8%), São Paulo (-0.7%) and Ceará (-0.6%) also showed negative results in cumulative index.

In the last twelve months, with an increase of 2.8% in May 2025, the index has remained positive and showed acceleration from last April's result (2.4%). In regional terms, twelve of the eighteen areas surveyed recorded positive rates in May 2025, but only nine showed greater dynamism compared to last April's figures. Rio Grande do Sul (from -1.3% to 2.8%), Espírito Santo (from -5.1% to -2.8%), Paraná (from 5.4% to 6.4%), Minas Gerais (from 2.0% to 2.9%), Pará (from 9.0% to 9.7%), Mato Grosso do Sul (from 1.7% to 2.4%) and Amazonas (from 1.0% to 1.7%) recorded the main gains between April and May 2025, while Rio Grande do Norte (from -6.6% to -9.5%), Mato Grosso (from 5.0% to 3.6%) and Bahia (from 3.1% to 1.9%) showed the sharpest losses between the two periods.
