Industrial production changes by 0.1% in April

In April 2025, the national output of industry changed by 0.1% from March, in the seasonally adjusted series. Against April 2024, in the non-adjusted series, there was a change of -0.3%, which interrupted a sequence of ten months of increase. The cumulative index in the year reached 1.4% and that in the last 12 months, 2.4%. The quarterly moving average for the quarter ended April stood at 0.5%.

Three of the four broad economic categories and 13 of the 25 industrial activities surveyed indicated increase in production from March to April 2025.

Among the activities, the main positive contributions came from mining and quarrying industry (1.0%) and beverages (3.6%), the former with a cumulative increase of 7.5% in three consecutive months of increase; the latter recording an increase after a null change (0.0%) in March and -0.1% in February 2025.

Other relevant contributions to the industry overall came from motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (1.0%) and printing and reproduction of recorded media (11.0%).

On the other hand, among the eleven activities with drops in output, the main impacts on the average of industry came from coke, petroleum products and biofuels (-2.5%) and pharmaceuticals (-8.5%), both partially making up for the advances recorded last March: 3.4% and 12.0%, respectively.

Pulp, paper and paper products (-3.1%), machinery and equipment (-1.4%), furniture (-3.7%), miscellaneous products (-3.8%) and electrical machinery and apparatus (-1.9%) accounted for other relevant negative contributions.

Among broad economic categories, also against March 2025, in the seasonally adjusted series, capital goods (1.4%) recorded the  highest positive result in April 2025 and made up for the loss of 0.5% recorded in the previous month. 

Producers of intermediate goods (0.7%) and durable consumer goods (0.4%) also recorded increases in the month, with the former recording an increase for the third month in a row, a period marked by an increase of 2.1%; and the second recording an expansion of 4.2% in two consecutive months of positive results. 

On the other hand, the segment of semi and non-durable goods, having decreased 1.9%, recorded the only negative rate in April 2025 and made up for the advance of 2.8% recorded last March. 

Quarterly moving average changes by 0.5% in the quarter ended April

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average recorded a positive change of 0.5% in the quarter ended April 2025 against the previous month and recorded increase for the second consecutive month, with a cumulative increase of 0.9% in the period. 

All the broad economic categories recorded positive results in April 2025, with increased intensity in intermediate goods (0.7%) and durable consumer goods (0.5%), and reduced figures in capital goods (0.3%) and semi and non-durable consumer goods (0.1%).

From April 2024, industrial production changes by -0.3%

Against April 2024, the industrial sector recored a negative change of 0.3%, with negativeresults in two of the broad economic categories, 16 of the 25 subsectors, 48 of the 80 groups and 53.7% of the 789 products surveyed. It is worth mentioning that April 2025 had two business days more (20) than the same month a year ago (22).

Among the activities, the main negative contributions to the industry overall came from food products (-4.9%), coke, petroleum products nd biofuels (-2.9%), motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (-3.7%) and pharmaceuticals (-9.0%).

Other negative contributions were recorded by the subsectors of electrical machinery and apparatus (-6,7%), pulp, paper and paper products (-3.8%), printing and reproduction of recorded media (-17.5%), leather and travel articles and footwear (-5.3%), manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories (-3.8%), miscellaneous products  (-5.3%) and rubber products and plastic material (-1.5%).

On the other hand, in the same comparison, among the nine activities that recorded increase in output, mining and quarrying industry  (10.2%) exerted the greatest influence on the average of industry. It is worth pointing out the positive contributions of basic metals (4.4%), maintenance, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (10.4%), machinery and equipment (2.5%), textiles (6.6%), beverages (2.5%) and chemicals (0.9%).

Semi and non-durable good and capital goods dropped from April 2024

Also against April 2024, semi and non-durable goods (-5.4%) and capital goods (-3.3%) accounted, in April 2025, for the nagative rates among the broad economic categories, following the movement of the industr overall (-0.3%). On the other hand, producers of intermediate goods (1.9%) and durale consumer goods (2.0%) recorded the positive results in April 2025.

The sector producing semi and non-durable goods dropped 5.4% in April 2025 from the same period a year ago, after n increase of 2.4% in March, when it interrupted a sequece of four consecutive months of negative rates in this type of comparison. The negative performance in the month results from the drops observed in all the groups, among which stand out: food and products elaborated for domestic consumption (-3.2%), fuels (-9.2%) and non-durable goods (-6.7%), due, to a great extent, to the lower production of frozen poultry and giblets, refined sugar, cookies and crackers, rice, fresh or cooled beef, dried pasta, ground roasted coffee and vitamin supplements, in the first one; ethyl alcohol, in the second; and medicines, hair preparations bar soaps, soaps or detergents, vaccines and saline solutions, disinfectants for domesti or industrial use, prnted material for advertising purposes in print, disposable plastic articles and fabric softeners, in the third one. 

It is also worth mentioning the negatove results of semi-durable goods (-6.3%) and of food products and beverages for domesric consumption (-4.0%), due, to a great extent, to drops in the production of mobile telephones, shirts, blouses of the like for female use (made of cotton or not), women's footwear made of synthetic material or leather, slacks, children's apparel and accessories (made of jersey or not), dresses (made of jersey of not), sports footwear made of ynthetic material, curtains and their accessories, aluminium artifacts for domestic use, mattresses and sleepwear or swimwear, in the former; and fish fillet and fresh, cooled or frozen fish, in the latter. 

The production of capital goods, having dropped 3.3% in April 2025 against the same period a year ago, recorded the second consecutive negative rate and intensified the pace of decrease from the result in the previous month (-0.8%). In the formation of the monthly index, the segment was mainly influenced by the drops observed in the group of capital goods for transportation equipment (-12.0%), driven by the reduced production of tractor truck for trailers and semi-trailers, buses and trailers and semi-trailers. It is also worth mentioning the drops recorded by capital goods for construction (-12.7%), for electricity (-5.1%) and for agriculture (-1.0%). On the other hand, subsectors of capital goods for industrial use (2.7%) and for mixed use (7.1%) accounted for the main positibe influences in April 2025.

Also in the comparison with April 2024, the segment of intermediate goods, having increased 1.9% in April against the same period a year ago, recorded the second consecutive positive rate, but with loss of intensity from the previous month result (3.9%). The monthly index was mainly due to advances in products related to activities of mining and quarrying industry (10.2%), basic metals (4.4%), chemicals (3.2%), textiles (10.1%) and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (0.4%), whereas negative contributions came from food products (-5.5%), pulp, paper and paper products (-4.4%), non-metallic mineral products (-1.7%), machinery and equipment (-3.5%), metal products (-1.5%), rubber products and plastic material (-1.1%) and motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (-0.4%).

It is also worth mentioning the groups of typical inputs for civil construction (-1.5%), which interrupted a sequence of twelve months of positive rates in this type of comparison; and packaging (-1.5%), which dropped agsin after recording an increase in March (1.2%) and a drop in February 2025 (-0.9%).

Durable consumer goods recorded an increase of 2.0% in April 2025 from the same month a year ago, with the eleventh consecutive positive increase in this sequence, but, at the same time, the lowest one. this month, the sector was greatly influenceded by the expanded manufacturing of cars (3.9%) and brown goods (8.7%). It is also worth mentioning the advances recorded by motorcycles (5.4%) and by other household appliances (3.1%). On the other hand, the main negative impacts came from white goods (-17.7%) and furniture (-2.0%).

Cumulative result in the index advances 1.4%

As for the cumulative index in 2025, against the same period a year ago, the industrial sector grew by 1.4%, with positive results in three of the four broad economic categories, 16 of the 25 subsectors, 50 of the 80 grouos and 53.9% of the 789 products surveyed. 

Among the activities, the main positive influences on the industry overall came from machinery and equipment (9.3%), motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (4.8%), chemicals (4.2%), mining and quarrying industry (1.8%) and basic metals (4.7%). Other important positive contributions came from the subsectors of textiles (11.8%), maintenance, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (8.8%), metal products (2.7%), electrical machinery and apparatus (3,5%), pharmaceuticals (3.1%) and furniture (5.0%).

On the other hand, also in the comparison between January and April 2024, among the nine activities that recorded drops in output, coke, petroleum products and biofuels (-2.6%) accounted for the biggest influence on the average of industry, mainly due to the lower production of diesel and ethyl alcohol. It is also worth mentioning the negative impacts of food products (-0.7%), pulp, paper and paper products (-2.5%), beverages (-2.3%) and printing and reproduction of recorded media (-11.3%).

Among the broad economic categories, the profile of results for the four first months of 2025 showed bigger dynamism in durable consumer goods (8.8%), due, to a great extent, to the increased productio of cars (7.3%) and brown goods (13.4%).  Producers of capital goods (2.6%) and intermediate goods (1.5%) also recorded positive rates of the cumulative index in the first four months of 2025 and showed higher advances than the average of industry (1.4%). On the other hand, the segment of semi and non-durable consumer goods, having dropped 0.9%, recorded the only negative rate in the first four months of the year.
