2024 hits record in the slaughtering of cattle, chicken and hogs and pigs

In 2024, 39.27 million head of cattle were slaughtered, representing an increase of 15.2% compared to the previous year, continuing the growth trend seen in 2022.

In the cumulative index for 2024, 6.46 billion chicken head were slaughtered, an increase of 2.7% (+172.73 million head) compared to 2023, reaching a new record in the time series begun in 1997.

Regarding the slaughter of hogs and pigs, in 2024, 57.86 million head were slaughtered, an increase of 1.2% (+684.24 thousand head) compared to 2023, setting a new record in the time series begun in 1997.

The cumulative acquisition of raw milk in 2024 was 25.38 billion liters, an increase of 3.1% over the amount recorded in 2023. 2024 is the second year of growth in milk acquisition, after two years of consecutive declines.

The production of hen eggs in 2024 was 4.67 billion dozen, an increase of 10.0% over the previous year, reaching a new production record in the Survey's time series.

In 2024, the tanneries surveyed by the Quarterly Survey of Leather reported having received 40.08 million whole pieces of rawhide, an amount 16.8% higher than that recorded in the previous year.

In the 4th quarter of 2024, cattle slaughter increased by 4.4% compared to the 4th quarter of 2023 and fell by 7.9% compared to the preceding quarter. Chicken slaughter in the 4th quarter of 2024 increased by 5.5% compared to the same period in 2023 and decreased by 1.1% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2024. The slaughter of hogs and pigs in the 4th quarter of 2024 increased by 0.9% compared to the same period in 2023 and decreased by 4.6% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2024.

Milk acquisition in the 4th quarter of 2024 was 6.79 billion liters, an increase of 4.6% compared to the 4th quarter of 2023 and an increase of 6.7% compared to the preceding quarter.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, 1.2 billion dozen hen eggs were produced, corresponding to an increase of 12.4% compared to the amount recorded in the fourth quarter of 2023 and a growth of 0.2% compared to the amount recorded in the preceding quarter.

In the fourth quarter of 2024, the acquisition of whole pieces of rawhide by tanneries increased by 11.2% compared to the amount acquired in the fourth quarter of 2023 and decreased by 5.7% compared to the third quarter of 2024, totaling 9.95 million pieces of rawhide.

In 2024, cattle slaughter reaches the highest result in the history of the survey

In 2024, 39.27 million head of cattle were slaughtered under some type of health inspection service, an increase of 15.2% compared to the previous year.

This result continues the growth trend seen in 2022 and is the highest in the history of the survey, surpassing that recorded in 2013, until then the highest value in the series.

In 2024, the slaughter of females increased for the third consecutive year, with an high of 19.0% compared to last year. The increase in the activity was followed by record exports of fresh beef (2.55 million tonnes), recorded by the time series of the Secretariat of Foreign Trade (Secex).

The slaughter of 5.17 million more head of cattle in the 2024/2023 comparison was caused by increases in 26 of the 27 Federation Units. The most significant increases in the Federation Units with 1.0% or more participation occurred in: Mato Grosso (+1.14 million head), Minas Gerais (+670.26 thousand head), São Paulo (+558.61 thousand head), Pará (+551.44 thousand head), Goiás (+472.65 thousand head) and Mato Grosso do Sul (+456.87 thousand head). On the other hand, the only drop recorded occurred in Rio Grande do Sul (-153.50 thousand head).

Mato Grosso still leads the ranking of FUs for cattle slaughter in 2024, with 18.1% of the national share, followed by Goiás (10.2%) and São Paulo (10.2%).

In the 4th quarter of 2024, 9.56 million head of cattle were slaughtered under some type of health inspection service. There was a 4.4% increase compared to the 4th quarter of 2023 and a 7.9% decrease compared to the 3rd quarter of 2024. Exports boosted the activity, growing by around 20.3%, and reached records in the period (700.92 thousand tonnes in the last quarter of 2024 against 582.57 thousand tonnes in the same quarter of 2023).

Chicken slaughter sets a record in the time series

In the cumulative result of the year, 6.46 billion head of chicken were slaughtered, an increase of 2.7% (+172.73 million head) compared to 2023, setting a new record in the time series that began in 1997.

In a monthly comparison between the years 2024 and 2023, April showed the highest increase (+73.46 million head), and, on the other hand, March showed the highest drop (-52.40 million head).

In 2024, exports of fresh chicken meat reached records in the Secex time series, both in exported volume and in revenue in dollars. The slaughter of 172.73 million more chicken head in 2024, compared to the previous year, was determined by an increase in slaughter in 19 of the 25 Federation Units that participated in the survey. Among those with a share above 1.0%, increases occurred in: Paraná (+53.28 million head), Santa Catarina (+51.92 million head), São Paulo (+40.21 million head), Mato Grosso (+20.13 million head), Minas Gerais (+13.84 million head), Goiás (+12.60 million head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+7.17 million head), Pernambuco (+6.11 million head) and Bahia (+2.33 million head). On the other hand, there was only a decrease in Rio Grande do Sul (-49.91 million head).

Paraná still takes the lead of the ranking of states by far in chicken slaughter in 2024, with a 34.2% national share, followed by Santa Catarina (13.8%) and then Rio Grande do Sul (11.4%).

In the 4th quarter of 2024, 1.62 billion head of chicken were slaughtered. This result represented a 5.5% increase compared to the same period in 2023 and a 1.1% decrease compared to the 3rd quarter of 2024. Driven by the record slaughters in the months of October and November, this performance represented the best 4th quarter in the time series that began in 1997.

With a 1.2% increase, slaughter of hogs and pigs reaches a new record

In 2024, 57.86 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered, representing an increase of 1.2% (+684.24 thousand head) compared to 2023, and setting a new record in the time series of the survey.

In a monthly comparison between the years 2024 and 2023, the month of April 2024 showed the highest increase (+666.86 thousand head of hogs and pigs), surpassing the months of January, February, July, September and October, which also showed positive change. In 2024, exports of fresh pork reached record levels in the Secex time series.

The slaughter of 684.24 thousand more head of hogs and pigs in 2024, compared to the previous year, was driven by increases in slaughter in 14 of the 25 Federation Units participating in the survey. Among those with a share above 1.0%, increases are: Paraná (+281.36 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (+189.56 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+149.62 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+64.29 thousand head), São Paulo (+50.87 thousand head) and Goiás (+5.51 thousand head). On the other hand, decreases occurred in: Mato Grosso (-24.35 thousand head) and Santa Catarina (-14.18 thousand head).

Santa Catarina maintained its leadership in the slaughter of hogs and pigs in 2024, with 29.1% of the national slaughter, followed by Paraná (21.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (17.1%).

In the 4th quarter of 2024, the slaughter of hogs and pigs totaled 14.28 million head, an increase of 0.9% compared to the same period in 2023 and a decrease of 4.6% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2024. This result meant the best 4th quarter in the time series begun in 1997.

In 2024, milk acquisition ranks second in time series

Dairy farms operating under some type of health inspection service collected 25.38 billion liters in 2024, an increase of 3.1% over the amount recorded in 2023. The year 2024 is the second year of growth in milk acquisition, after two years of consecutive declines. This year's milk acquisition ranks second in the time series, being the highest since the record of 25.64 billion liters of milk observed in 2020.

In the monthly comparison, all months showed positive change in relation to 2023, with the most significant change being recorded in December (+152.11 million liters). If production throughout 2024 is considered, the average price per liter of milk acquired was around R$ 2.61. A 7% increase compared to the average purchase price in 2023 (R$2.44). In addition to the price growth in the period, dairy products recorded an even greater increase between the fourth quarters of 2023 and 2024, of around 31.4%, going from R$2.10 to R$2.76, respectively.

There was an increase of 773.35 million liters of milk, nationwide, in the comparison between 2024 and 2023, related to the increase in the volume collected in 15 of the 26 Federation Units participating in the Quarterly Survey of Milk. The most considerable absolute positive changes occurred in Minas Gerais (441.07 million liters), Paraná (257.62 million liters) and Santa Catarina (93.42 million liters). On the other hand, there were decreases in 11 FUs, the most significant of which were recorded in Rio Grande do Sul (-54.26 million liters), São Paulo (-50.92 million liters) and Rondônia (-22.91 million liters).

Minas Gerais continued to lead the ranking of milk acquisition, with 24.9% of the national collection, followed by Paraná (15.4%) and Santa Catarina (13.0%).

In the 4th quarter of 2024, the acquisition of raw milk by establishments operating under some type of sanitary inspection was 6.79 billion liters, an increase of 4.6% compared to the 4th quarter of 2023, and an increase of 6.7% compared to the previous quarter.

For yet another year, hen egg production sets record in time series

Hen egg production in 2024 was 4.67 billion dozen, an increase of 10.0% compared to the previous year. For yet another year, the total annual production is a record in the time series of the Survey.

Throughout 2024, the poultry sector was driven by increases in prices related to other proteins, with heated domestic and external demands. In addition, the growth of the broiler chicken sector directly influences the production of eggs for incubation.

The production of 423.72 million dozen more eggs, at a national level, in the comparison of 2024 and 2023, was a consequence of the increase in production in 25 of the 26 FUs with farms included in the survey universe, with the only decrease observed in Maranhão. The most significant increases occurred in: São Paulo (+92.37 million dozen), Minas Gerais (+80.23 million dozen), Pernambuco (+69.74 million dozen) and Espírito Santo (+35.61 million dozen).

The State of São Paulo showed an increase of 8.2% in its production, compared to the previous year, and continued to be responsible for the largest production among the FUs, leading the annual ranking of states in hen egg production, with 26.0% of national production, followed by Paraná (9.8%), Minas Gerais (9.7%) and Espírito Santo (8.0%). In 2024, more than half of the farms, 1,136 (53.7%), produced eggs for consumption, accounting for 82.1% of the total eggs produced, while 979 farms (46.3%) produced eggs for hatching, accounting for 17.9% of the total eggs produced.

In the 4th quarter of 2024, hen egg production reached 1.2 billion dozen, corresponding to an increase of 12.4% compared to the amount recorded in the same quarter of 2023 and growth of 0.2% over that recorded in the preceding quarter. The 4th quarter of 2024 presented the highest production of the year, compared to previous periods, and was also the highest amount ever estimated by the survey.

Leather acquisition increases 16.8% in 2024

In 2024, the tanneries surveyed by the Quarterly Survey of Leather reported having received 40.08 million whole pieces of rawhide. This amount was 16.8% higher than that recorded in the previous year, and the month with the greatest change was April (+32.4%).

The increase of 5.77 million whole pieces of leather, nationwide, in the 2024/2023 comparison, was influenced by the increase in the receipt of bovine hides in 13 of the 17 Federation Units participating in the survey. The most significant positive changes occurred in Goiás (+690.8 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso (+672.1 thousand pieces) and Mato Grosso do Sul (+347.6 thousand pieces). On the other hand, the most significant reduction occurred in Rio Grande do Sul (-33.86 thousand pieces).

In the ranking of the states, Goiás became the leader in the reception of hides by tanneries in 2024, with a 17.6% national share, followed by Mato Grosso (16.4%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (12.3%).

The tanneries investigated by the Quarterly Survey of Leather – those that tan at least 5,000 whole units of raw bovine hide per year – reported having received 9.95 million whole pieces of raw bovine hide in the 4th quarter of 2024. This amount represents an increase of 11.2% compared to the amount acquired in the 4th quarter of 2023 and a decrease of 5.7% compared to the 3rd quarter of 2024.
