Volume of services retreats 0.5% in December; closes 2024 rising 3.1%

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of services in Brazil dropped 0.5% in December 2024 against November. It was the second negative figure in a row, accumulating a loss of 1.9% in the last two months of the year.

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, volume of services grew 2.4% compared with December 2023, the ninth consecutive positive figure in this comparison.
As a result, the cumulative index in the year, over the same period in 2023, closed with an expansion of 3.1%, the fourth consecutive year of growth.
As the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months grew 3.1%, the sector stepped up the pace of expansion over November (2.8%) and registered the most intense rate since November 2023 (3.5%).
In December 2024, the services sector was 15.6% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 1.9% below that of October 2024 (peak of the time series).

The retreat in volume of services (-0.5%) between November and December 2024 was followed by three out of five dissemination activities investigated, highlighted by the retraction coming from other services (-4.2%), which reported the most intense drop since January 2023 (-11.2%).
The other retreats came from professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.7%) and information and communication (-0.7%), the former registering the second consecutive setback, with a cumulative loss of 3.9%, and the latter virtually offsetting the entire gain recorded in November (0.9%).
On the other hand, services rendered to families (0.8%) reported the most relevant advance and accumulated a growth of 7.8% between May and December 2024. On its turn, transportation (0.1%) registered a slight positive change, after retreating 3.5% in November.
The quarterly moving average recorded a negative change of 0.2% in the quarter ended in December 2024 over the level of the previous month. Among the sectors, still in relation to the marginal movement of this index, negative rates prevailed, since three out of five sectors investigated also retracted: other services (-1.6%), professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.6%), and information and communication (-0.3%), whereas services rendered to families (0.9%) and transportation (0.3%) recorded the advances this month.
Compared with December 2023, volume in the services sector expanded 2.4% in December 2024, the ninth positive figure in a row. The advance this month was followed by four out of five dissemination activities and also counted with the growth in 53.6% of the 166 types of services investigated.
Among the sectors, information and communication (5.2%) exerted the major positive impact. The other advances came from transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (2.9%), professional, administrative and complementary services (1.9%) and services rendered to families (2.2%). In contrast, other services (-5.1%) exerted the only negative influence.
In the cumulative index between January and December 2024 over the same period last year, the services sector expanded 3.1%, with four out of five dissemination activities registering positive rates and a growth in 61.4% of the 166 types of services investigated.
Among the sectors, the most important positive contributions came from information and communication (6.2%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (6.2%). The other advances came from services rendered to families (4.4%) and other services (1.1%).
On the other hand, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (-0.7%) exerted the only negative influence on the cumulative index in the year.
Services retreat in 17 out of 27 Federation Units in December
In regional terms, 17 out of 27 Federation Units retracted in volume of services in December 2024 over November. Among the places that recorded negative rates this month, the most important impacts came from São Paulo (-0.7%), Santa Catarina (-5.2%) and Mato Grosso (-11.8%), followed by Bahia (-2.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.5%).
In contrast, Rio de Janeiro (1.2%) exerted the major positive contribution this month, followed by Pernambuco (2.5%), Minas Gerais (0.6%) and Pará (3.3%).
The expansion of volume of services in Brazil (2.4%) over December 2023 was followed by 20 out of 27 Federation Units. The most important positive contribution came from São Paulo (2.8%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (6.7%), Minas Gerais (3.6%), Federal District (5.7%) and Pernambuco (7.9%).
Conversely, Mato Grosso (-22,.%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-7.5%) led the losses this month.
In the cumulative index between January and December 2024 over the same period a year ago, the advance in volume of services in Brazil (3.1%) was widespread along the places investigated, since 21 out of 27 Federation Units also expanded the real revenue of services. The major positive impact in regional terms occurred in São Paulo (4.5%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (4.0%), Santa Catarina (6.1%), Paraná (3.6%) and Minas Gerais (2.0%).
On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-7.3%) and Mato Grosso (-10.2%) recorded the most important negative influences on the national index.
Tourism activities grow 2.8% in December and 3.5% in 2024
After retreating 1.3% in November, the index of tourism activities expanded 2.8% in December 2024 over November. As a result, the tourism segment is 14.6% above the level of February 2020, renewing the peak of its time series.
In regional terms, 12 out of 17 places surveyed followed the expansion recorded by the national tourism activity (2.8%). The most relevant positive contribution came from São Paulo (4.1%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (1.4%), Pará (9.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (2.6%).
Conversely, Santa Catarina (-3.8%) led the losses of tourism, followed by the Federal District (-2.0%) and Paraná (-1.0%).
Comparing December 2024 and December 2023, the volume of tourism activities in Brazil grew 9.5%, the seventh positive rate in a row. In regional terms, 15 out of 17 Federation Units where the indicator is investigated advanced in tourism services, highlighted by São Paulo (11.5%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (9.6%), Bahia (11.3%), Minas Gerais (5.6%) and Paraná (10.9%).
On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-6.1%) and Alagoas (-7.0%) exerted the only negative impacts this month.
In the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities expanded 3.5% over the same period of the previous year. In regional terms, 11 out of 17 places investigated also recorded positive rates, highlighted by the gains coming from São Paulo (3.7%) and Rio de Janeiro (6.3%), followed by Bahia (8.4%), Minas Gerais (4.5%), Paraná (7.2%) and Santa Catarina (9.0%).
Conversely, Rio Grande do Sul (-14.3%) reported the most important negative impact on the cumulative index in the year in tourism, followed by Mato Grosso (-12.5%), Espírito Santo (-2.5%), Federal District (-1.1%) and Amazonas (-2.6%).
Passenger transportation rises 0.9% in December and closes year with an expansion of 2.8%
In December 2024, volume of passenger transportation in Brazil increased 0.9% over November in the seasonally-adjusted series, after a decrease of 6.3% in November. As a result, the segment was 5.6% above the level in February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 18.4% below that of February 2014 (peak of the time series).
In the seasonally-unadjusted series, it expanded 14.9% in December 2024 against December 2023, the fourth positive figure in a row.
In the cumulative indicator between January and December 2024, passenger transportation expanded 2.8% over the same period in 2023.
Cargo transportation retreats 1.3% in December and falls 2.3% in 2024
Volume of cargo transportation retreated 1.3% in December 2024 over November 2024, the second consecutive setback, with a cumulative loss of 2.7% in the last two months of the year. As a result, the segment is 8.3% below the peak of the time series (July 2023). Concerning the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation was 31.8% above that of February 2020.
In the seasonally unadjusted series, it retreated 2.2% against December 2023, the second drop in a row.
In the cumulative indicator between January and December 2024, cargo transportation retreated 2.3 over the previous year.
