Industry closes 2024 with 3.1% growth, advancing in 17 of the 18 locations surveyed

The national industry changed -0.3% from November to December, in the seasonally adjusted series, with seven of the 15 places surveyed by the IBGE showing negative rates. The largest drops were in Pará (-8.8%) and Ceará (-6.8%).

In 2024, industrial production expanded by 3.1%, with increases in 17 of the 18 places, with Santa Catarina (7.7%), Rio Grande do Norte (7.4%) and Ceará (6.9%) standing out. In the moving average for the quarter ended in December, there was a decline in seven of the 15 places surveyed compared to the quarter ending in November. Compared to December 2023, there was growth in nine of the 18 places surveyed.

In the seasonally adjusted series, from November to December 2024, national industrial production showed a negative change of 0.3%, with seven of the 15 places surveyed showing negative rates. The sharpest drops were in Pará (-8.8%) and Ceará (-6.8%), with the former eliminating part of the 14.7% gain accumulated in the months of October and November 2024, and the latter recording a loss of 8.0% in two consecutive months of falling production. Mato Grosso (-4.7%), Paraná (-4.1%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.1%) also showed negative results that were more intense than the national average (-0.3%), while São Paulo (-0.2%) and Minas Gerais (-0.1%) completed the set of places with negative indexes in December 2024.

On the other hand, Amazonas (4.3%), Espírito Santo (4.0%) and Pernambuco (3.9%) showed the highest advances in that month, with the first location intensifying the expansion observed last November (3.2%), the second interrupting two consecutive months of falling production, a period in which it accumulated a loss of 9.1%, and the third accumulating a gain of 5.9% in two consecutive months of growth. Bahia (2.8%), Northeast Region (1.4%), Goiás (0.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (0.7%) and Santa Catarina (0.5%) also recorded positive results in December 2024.

In the year to date for 2024, compared to the year to date for 2023, national production expanded by 3.1%, with positive results in 17 of the 18 places surveyed, with Santa Catarina (7.7%), Rio Grande do Norte (7.4%) and Ceará (6.9%) standing out. Pará (5.7%), Mato Grosso (5.4%), Pernambuco (4.6%), Paraná (4.2%), Amazonas (3.6%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (3.5%) also showed more intense positive rates than the national average (3.1%), while São Paulo (3.1%), Bahia (2.7%), Goiás (2.6%), Northeast Region (2.5%), Maranhão (2.5%), Minas Gerais (2.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (0.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (0.1%) completed the set of places with growth in production in the cumulative index for the end of 2024.

In the opposite direction, Espírito Santo, with a decline of 1.6%, marked the only negative result in the cumulative index for the period January-December 2024.

The quarterly moving average in the quarter ended in December 2024 was -0.4% compared to the quarter ended in November. In regional terms, seven of the 15 places surveyed showed negative rates this month, with the sharpest declines being recorded in Espírito Santo (-1.9%), Ceará (-1.7%), São Paulo (-0.9%), Minas Gerais (-0.7%) and Paraná (-0.7%).

On the other hand, Amazonas (2.5%), Pernambuco (1.7%), Bahia (1.5%) and Pará (1.4%) showed the main advances in December 2024.

Compared to December 2023, the industrial sector grew 1.6% in December 2024, with positive results in nine of the 18 places surveyed. It is worth mentioning that December 2024 (21 days) had 1 more business day than the same month of the previous year (20).

Amazonas (11.0%) and Pernambuco (10.1%) recorded double-digit expansions, the sharpest in this month. Mato Grosso (8.5%), Santa Catarina (7.2%), the Northeast Region (4.8%), Bahia (4.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.8%), Pará (2.9%) and Paraná (2.5%) completed the set of places with production growth in the monthly index for December 2024.

On the other hand, Rio Grande do Norte (-21.1%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-10.9%) recorded double-digit declines, the highest this month. Espírito Santo (-9.2%), Ceará (-8.2%), Rio de Janeiro (-5.1%), Maranhão (-3.9%), Goiás (-2.8%), Minas Gerais (-1.8%) and São Paulo (-1.5%) also showed negative results in the monthly index for December 2024.
