In September, retail sales change by 0.5%

In September 2024, volume of retail trade sales increased by 0.5% from August, in the seasonally adjusted series. In the previous month, there was a change of 0.2%. The quarterly moving average changed by 0.3% in the quarter and ended September.

In the series without seasonal adjustment, retail trade increased by 2.1% from September 2023, the 16th consecutive positive rate. The cumulative index in the year reached 4.8%, whereas the cumulative index in 12 months stood at 3.9%.
The volume of sales of extended retail trade, which encompasses vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, construction material and wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco, increased by 1.8%, in the seasonally adjusted series. The quarterly moving average increased by 0.5%. In the non-adjusted series, extended retail trade increased by 3.9%, with a cumulative increase of 4.5% in the year against the same period in 2023 and by 3.8% in 12 months.
Four of the eight activities advanced from August
In terms of sectors, there was a balance between positive and negative rates. Other personal and household articles(3.5%), Fuels and lubricants (2.3%), Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries (1.6%) and Hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.3%) recorded positive rates. Furniture and household appliances (-2.9%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-1.8%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (-1.7%) and Books, newspapers magazines and stationery (-0.9%) recorded drops from August to September.

Regarding extended retail trade, the activities recording increase from August to September were Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces, with 6.6%, and Construction material, with 1.1%.
Four retail trade activities increase from September 2023
Against 2023, four of the eight sectors investigated had positive results: Pharmeceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (16.3%), Other personal and household articles (5.7%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (0.7%) and Hyper and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.6%).
Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-10.6%), Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-4.9%), Fuels and lubricants (-1.5%) and Furniture and household appliances (-0.4%).
As for extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded an increase of 18.0%, Construction material recorded an increase of 9.4% and Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco dropped 9.1% in September 2024, against September 2023.

The activity Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries increased (16.3%) for the nineteenth consecutive month, against the same month a year ago (the last one recording a negative change was February 2023: -0.5%). The sector also registered the biggest contribution to the formation of retail tradde rate, a total of 1.7 p.p. from a total 2.1% of the interannual indicador. As for the cumulative index in the year. the result of September 2024 was 14.7%, at the same level of cumulative increases until August (14.5%). In the last twelve months, the result up to September 2024 was 12.8%, having accelerated since 2023 (3.6%).
The sector of Other personal and household articles had, in September 2024, its eighth consecutive month of increase in the interannual comparison: 5.7%. In the comparison between September 2023 and September 2024, the activity srepresented the second biggest contribution to the composition of retail trade rate, with 0.4 p.p. out of a total of 21% of retail. Increase was observed both for cumulative indicators in the year (7.1%) and for the cumulative indexes in the year in the last 12 months (2.1%). Such results evidence the recovery of the sector after a negative performance in 2023, when physical shops were closed adueto the accounting crisis by major companies in the sector.
In the case of Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear, the interannual rate for the month of September 2024 was 0.7%, thirds onein the field after a null change (0.0%) in June 2024. Also against the same month a year ago, for the last 11 months, only three recorded negative rates (-0.5% in February, -0.9% in March and -3.7% in April). In the year, the secor has a cumulative increase of 1.2% up to September, and the cumulative index in 12 months also had a positive result: 1.2%.
The segment of Hyper, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco increased by 0.6% in the comparison between September 2024 and the same month a year ago. In addition, in the last twelve month, the second had only one month of decrease, with a drop in the interannual comparison: April 2024 (-1.3%). In the year, up to September, the cumulative result is positive at 5.1%, below the previous result (5.7% up to August). In the last twelve months, the result is of decrease in gains: 5.44% up to August versus 4.9% up to September.
The sector of Office, computer and communication material and equipment registered, in September, a drop of 4.9% against the same month a year ago, second consecutive of drop after a positive change in July: 0.3% in July and -2.8% in August. The cumulative increase in the year amounts to 1.2% up to September, below 2.0% up to August. The result of the last 12 months was 2.0%, the lowest positive one since March 2024: 2.4% in Apri; 2.8% in May; 4.0% in June; 3.4% in July and 2.7% in August.
Fuels and lubricants had a result 1.5% below that of September 2023, the lowest negative one in these five consecutive months of drop: -4.0% both in May and in June, -4.4% in July and -4.6% in August. Also in the interannual comparison, the sector accounted for the main contribution from the negative side to retail, with -0.2 p.p. in the total +2.1% of the eight sector surveyed. In the year, the cumulative has been negative sice March 2024, reching -2.4% up to September. A similar scenario is observed in the last 12 months: seven consecutive months of drops, reaching -2.8% up to September.
As for Furniture and household appliances, the month on month comparison indicates a negative change in September 2024 (-0.4%), reversing the positive result throughout the five previous months. In 2024, there were only two moments with non-positive results in the series of the interannual indicator: March (-4.4%) and the month of September, previously mentioned. As for the cumulative index in the year, the activity records increases of 3.3% up to September, a level below that of August (3.7%). In the last 12 months, the result has been positive up to September (2.8%) and up to August (3.1%), as in the 13 preceding years.
As for extended retail trade, the activity Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces closed September 2024 with 18.0% of increase from September 2023. In the time series, this is the seventeenth consecutive month to record an increase (the latest drop was in April 2023: -2.0%). The result of September led the sector to record the biggest contribution to the formation of the global rate of extended retail, accounting for 3.3 p.p. of the 3.9% of the total of eleven activities covered by the survey. In terms of cumulative index in the year, the result was 13.3% up to September, at a pace above the previous month (12.7%). In the last 12 months, thre has been a cumulative result: 12.9% up to September.
The sector of Construction material increased by 9.4% in September 2024 against September 2023, fourth consecutive positive result (3.9% in June, 11.0% in July and 4.6% in August). The activity was the third one in terms of influence with negative results, accounting for 0.7 p.p. out of 3.9% in retail trade. The cumulative index in the year closed at 4.2% and has had positive results since April 2024. In the last 12 months there was also increase: 3.6%, sixth positive result in a row.
At last, the activity Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco registered a drop of 9.1% from September 2023, which placed the sector as the main one in terms of negative contribution, representing -1.4 p.p. ot of 3.9% in extended retail trade. This is the second negative result in this activity after +0.6% in July. In the year, there is a scenario of decreases: -6.7% up to July. As for the cumulative results in 12 months, the result is negative (3.7%) up to September 2024, against the same period a year ago.
Retail trade up by 4.0% in Q3 2024
Retail trade registered an increase of 4.0% in Q3 2024, agains the same quarter in 2023. As a result, the third quarter adds a point to the sequence of eight positive results, in terms of volume, for this indicator. The positive result was observed in five of the eight sectors forming the global indicator: Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (16.1%), Other personal and household articles (6.0%), Furniture and household appliances (4.7%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (4,2%) and Hyper, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (3.5%). Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-8.0%), Fuels and lubricants (-3.5%) and Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-2.4%) closed the third quarter of 2024 below the same quarter in 2023.
For extended retail, the rise of 4.8% in Q3 2024 is the seventh consecutive one. Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material increased in Q3 2023: 15.3% and 8.2%, respectively. On the other hand, Wholesale trade of food products, beverages and tobacco recorded a drop of 6.8%, in volume, in comparison with third quarters of 2024 and 2023.
Compared to August, sales increased in 21 Federation Units in September
From August to September 2024, in the seasonally adjusted series, The national average rate of trade sales advanced by 0.5%, with positive results in 21 federation Units, amog which Espírito Santo (3.8%), Amazonas (3.3%) and Piauí (3.0%) stand out. On the other hand, withe negative results, were 5 of the 27 Federation Units, where Amapá (-3.9%), Tocantins (-3.9%) andMato Grosso (-2.5%) stand out, with negative results. Minas Gerais remained stable (0.0%).
As for extended retail trade, the change from August to September 2024 was 1.8%, with a predominance of positive results, in 20 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to Paraná (20.5%), Espírito Santo (6.0%) and Maranhão (4.1%). On the other hand, seven of the 27 Federation Units had negative results, mainly Amapá (-3.7%), Tocantins (-2.8%) and Bahia (-1.6%).
Against 2023, sales increase in 22 Federation Units
Against September 2023, the change of sales in retail trade, this month, was 2.1%, with a predominance of positive results in 22 of the 27 Federation Units, where Amapá (14.6%), Paraíba (13.0%) and Roraima (11.3%) stand out. On the other hand, with negative results, five of the 27 Federation Units stand out, mainly Mato Grosso (-1.9%), Minas Gerais (-1.1%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-0.6%).
In extended retail trade, the change between September 2024 and 2023 was 3.9%, with positive results in 23 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to Paraná (20.4%), Amapá (17.7%) and Paraíba (12.9%). On the other hand, with negative contributions, there were four of 27 Federation Units, mainly Mato Grosso do Sul (-7.7%), São Paulo (-1.1%) and Mato Grosso (-1.0%).
