IPCA of August was -0.02%

TheExtended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) of August was –0.02% and stood 0.40 percentage points below the rate of July (0.38%). In the year, IPCA had a cumulative increase of 2.85% and, in the last 12 months, of 4.24%, below that of the immediately previous 12 months. In August 2023, the index had changed by 0.23%.

Among the nine groups of products and services surveyed, two dropped and affected the result of Augus: Hpusing (-0.51%) and Food products and beverages (-0.44%), (-0.44%), which accounted for -0.08 percentage points (p.p.) and -0.09 p.p, respectively. As for increases, Education Education (0.73% and 0.04 p.p.) was responsible for the main contribution. The Other results ranged between 0.00% (Transportation) and 0.74% (Household appliances).

In Housing (-0.51%), the result was mainly influenced by residential electricity, which changed from 1.93% in July to 2.77% in August, with the resumption of the green-flag charge. Rising fares were observed in the following areas: Porto Alegre (-0.69%), with 0.06% in one of the concessionaires starting on August 19; Vitória (-1.49%), with a drop of 1.96% , since August 7; São Paulo (-3.07%), with an average drop of 2.43% in the fares of concessionaires since July 4; São Luís (-4.52%), with a drop of 1.11% starting on August 28; and Belém (-5.63%), with a reduction of 2.75% since August 7.

Also in Housing the result of water and sewage rate (0.44%) is influenced by the following adjustments: 8.05% in Fortaleza (6.49%), since August 5th; 5.81% in Salvador (5.43%), since August 1st; 4.31% in Vitória (4.03%), since August 1st; and an average decrease of 0.61% in São Paulo (-0.47%), starting on July 23.

As for Food and beverages (-0.44%), food at home (-0.73%) recorded the second consecutive drop, after a decrease of 1.51% in July. Prices of potato (-19.04%), tomato (-16.89%) and onions (-16.85%) fell. With increases, papaya (17.58%), chunkey banana (11.37%) and ground coffee (3.70%) stood out.

Food away from home (0.33%) recorded a change below the that of the previous month (0.39%). The subitem snack decelerated from 0.74% in July to 0.11% in August, whereas meals accelerated from 0.24% to 0.44%.

In Transportation (0.00%), the stability of prices in the group was influenced by movements of prices in opposite directions. As for fuels (0,61%), vehicle gas (4.10%), gasoline (0.67%) and oil (0.37%) increased, whereas ethanol dropped by 0.18%. In addition, airfares recorded drops in prices (-4.93%).

In Education (0.73%), regular courses rose 0.76%, mainly due to the subitems higher education (1.09%) and primary school (0.57%). The rise of varied courses (0.47%) was mainly influenced by language courses (0.98%).

By area, the biggest change was found in Porto Alegre (0.18%), driven by the rise of airfares (21.59%). On the other hand, the lowest change was that of São Luís (-0.54%), due to the drops in  residential electricity (-4.52%) and tomato (-23.78%).

In order to estimate the monthly index, the prices collected from July 30 to August 29, 2024 (reference) were compared with those in force from June 29 to July 29, 2024 (base). Calculated since 1980, the indicator refers to households with monthly income of 1 to 40 minimum wages, whatever the source and encompasses ten metropolitan areas in Brazil, besides the municipalities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís, Aracaju and Brasília.

INPC drops by 0.14% in August

The National Consumer Price Index - INPC recorded a drop of  0.14% in August, 0.40 p.p. below the result of July (0.26%). In the year, INPC had a cumulative increase of 2.80%, and, in the last 12 months, of 3.71%, below the 4.06% observed in the immediately previous 12 months. In August 2023, the rate was of 0.20%.

Food products dropped by 0.63% in August, second consecutive decrease, after a drop of 0.95% in July. The change of non-food products decelerated from 0.65% in July to 0.02% in August.

As for regional indexes, Vitória accounted for the main increase (0.13%), due to water and sewage rates (4,04%). The lowest change was observed in São Luís (-0.58%), driven by the fall of prices of tomato (-23.78%) and residential electricity (-4.50%).
