Volume of services increases by 1.7% in June

In June 2024, volume of services in Brazil increased by 1.7% from May, in the seasonally adjusted series, after a change of 0.4% in the previous month.

The services sector is 14.3% above the level in February 2020 (pre pandemic) and reaches the peak of the series, 0.5% above the record level, of December 2022.

In the seasonally adjusted series, against June 2023, volume of services recorded an increase of 1.3% in June 2024, after a change of -0.1% in May.

As for the cumulative index in the first semester of 2024, , volume of services increased by 1.6% against the same period in 2023.

Thecumulative index in the last 12 months decelerated from 1.2% to 1.0% in June 2024.

The increase in volume of services (1.7%), observed from May to June 2024, was observed by all the five dissemination activities investigated, with a highlight to advances in transportation (1.8%) and information and communication (2.0%). The other increases were found among professional, administrative and complementary services (1.3%), other services (1.6%) and services rendered to families (0.3%).

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the evolution of the quarterly moving average index for the total volume of services recorded a positive change of 0.5% in the quarter ended June 2024 from the level a month ago.

Among the sectors, there was a predominance of positive rates, as three of the five sectors investigated also increased: other services (1.4%); transportation (0.7%); and information and communication (0.5%). Professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.6%) and services rendered to families (-0.1%) recorded drops in the month.

From June 2023, volume in the services sector increased by 1.3% in June 2024, after a slight negative change in May (-0.1%). Advance was observed in four of the five dissemination activities and with an increase of 55.4% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sectors, information and communication (5.8%) accounted for the main positive impact. The other advances came from other services (5.0%); services rendered to families (4.1%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.5%).

On the contrary, Transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (-2.7%) accounted for the only negative influence.

As for the cumulative index in the first semester of 2024 (January-June), against the same period a year ago, the sectors of services recorded an increase of 1.6%, with positive rates in four of the five activities and an increase in 55.4% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sectors, the main positive contribution was found in information and communication (5.6%). Other increases came from professional, administrative and complementary services (2.1%); services rendered to families (4.6%); and other services (3.8%).

Transportation, auxiliary services for transportation and mailing (-2.5%) represented the only negative rate.

By area, volume of services increased in 21 Federation Units in June

By area, most of (21) the 27 Federation Units (FUs) recorded increase in volume of services in June 2024, in the comparison with May 2024.

Among the areas which recorded the main positive rates this month, the most significant impact came from São Paulo (2.6%), followed by Paraná (3.0%), Rio de Janeiro (1.4%), Minas Gerais (1.9%) and Santa Catarina (2.4%).

On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-14.5%) accounted for the main negative influence this month, due to the impact caused by floods that hit the state in May.

Against June 2023, the increase of volume of services in Brazil (1.3%) was observed in 19 of the 27 FUs. São Paulo (2.6%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (6.4%), Minas Gerais (2.4%), Paraná (2.1%) and Santa Catarina (2.9%) accounted for the main positive contributions.

Rio Grande do Sul (-19.7%), on the Other hand, led the drops in the month, followed by Mato Grosso (-13.4%) and the Federal District (-4.7%).

Regarding the cumulative index in the first semester of 2024 (January-June), from the same index a year ago, the advance of volume of services in Brazil (1.6%) was widespread among the areas surveyed, with increase in the real revenue from services in 21 of the 27 of the FUs. São Paulo (1.1%), Rio de Janeiro (3.8%), Minas Gerais (4.3%), Paraná (4.0%) and Santa Catarina (5.2%) accounted for the main positive impacts..

In June, tourism activities grew by 3.4%

In June 2024, the index of tourism activities indicated an increase of 3.4% against the immediately previous month, after a drop of 0.9% in May.

As a result, the tourism segment is 7.7% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020) and 0.1% below the peak of the series (February 2014).

By area, all the 12 areas surveyed followed the same movement observed in national tourism activity. The most relevant positive contributions were those of São Paulo (4.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (8.2%), followed by Bahia (5.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (8.5%) and Minas Gerais (1.6%).

In the comparison between June 2024 and June 2023, the index of volume of tourism activities in Brazil increased by 3.9%, after a drop of 1.6% in May. In regional terms, nine of the 12 FUs where the indicator is investigated recorded increases in tourism services, in which Rio de Janeiro (11.5%) e São Paulo (3.6%), followed by Minas Gerais (9.1%) and Bahia (19.2%) stood out.

Rio Grande do Sul (-34.9%) accounted for the main negative impact this month.

As for the cumulative index for the first semester of 2024 (January - June), the special aggregate for tourism activities recorded an increase of 1.3% against the same period a year ago. .

By area, seven of the 12 areas surveyed also registered positive rates, among which stand out the increases in Minas Gerais (9.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.0%), followed by Bahia (9.1%), Paraná (5.0%) and Santa Catarina (6.1%).

On the other hand, Rio Grande do Sul (-16.0%) registered the most important negative impact in tourism this year, followed by the Federal District (-5.4%), Espírito Santo (-8.8%) and Goiás (-4.9%).

Tourism indicator will be expanded from 12 to 17 areas

From September on, in the Monthly Survey of Services that will show the results of July 2024, the index of tourism activities will be expanded from the current 12 to a total of 17 areas. The states of Amazonas (AM), Pará (PA), Rio Grande do Norte (RN), Alagoas (AL) and Mato Grosso (MT), will be added to the current Federation Units already investigated: Ceará (CE), Bahia (BA), Pernambuco (PE), Minas Gerais (MG), Espírito Santo (ES), Rio de Janeiro (RJ), São Paulo (SP), Paraná (PR), Santa Catarina (SC), Rio Grande do Sul (RS), Goiás (GO) and the Federal District (DF).

Transportation of passengers increases and of cargo records positive changes in June

InJune 2024, the volume of transportation of passengers in Brazil increased by 6.2% Against the immediately previous month, with seasonal adjustment, after a drop of 6.7% in May.

So, the segment is, in this month of reference, 1.9% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 21.2% below February 2014 (peak of the time series).

In comparison with May 2023, swith seasonal adjustment, Transportation of passengers increased by 3.5% in June 2024, after a drop of 7.0% in May. Regarding the cumulative index in the first semester of 2024 (January-June), there was a drop of 2.6% from the same period in 2023.

Volume of cargo transportation recorded a positive change of 0.4% in June 2024, after a decrease of 0.5% in the previous month.

The segment is 6.8% below the peak of the time series (July 2023) and 33.7% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020).

In the comparison with June 2023, the index increased by 5.7%, second negative rate in a row, whereas in the cumulative index in the first semester of 2024 (January-June), transportation of cargo dropped by 1.3%.
