In July, IPCA reaches 0.38%

The Extended National Consumer Price Index (IPCA) for July was 0.38%, 0.17 percentage points (pp) above the rate recorded in June (0.21%). In the year, the IPCA has accumulated an increase of 2.87% and, in the last 12 months, of 4.50%, above the 4.23% observed in the previous 12 months. In July 2023, the change had been 0.12%.

Of the nine groups of products and services surveyed, seven rose in July. The largest change (1.82%) and impact (0.37 pp) was in Transportation. Next came the Housing group (0.77% and 0.12 pp). With negative rates, Food and Beverages (-1.00% and -0.22 pp) stands out. The other groups were between -0.02% for Wearing apparel and 0.52% for Personal Expenses.

In the Transportation group (1.82%), the biggest change came from airfare (19.39%). The biggest impact was in gasoline (3.15% and 0.16 pp). Regarding other fuels (3.31%), ethanol (5.90%) and diesel fuel (1.03%) showed price increases, while vehicle gas (-0.20%) recorded a drop.

The result of the Housing group (0.77%) was mainly influenced by residential electricity (1.93% and 0.08 pp). In July, the yellow tariff flag came into effect, adding R$1.885 to every 100 kWh consumed. In addition, there was an average reduction of -2.43% in the rates of one of the energy concessionaires in São Paulo (0.98%), starting on July 4.

Also in Housing, the drop in water and sewage rates (-0.02%) is due to the following: tariff rise of 9.85% in Brasília (0.60%), starting on June 1; and an average reduction of -0.61% in São Paulo (-0.14%), starting on July 23. In the piped gas subitem (-0.04%), the result in Rio de Janeiro (-0.12%) is due to the residual appropriation of the average reduction of 1.75%, starting on June 1.

In Food and beverages (-1.00%), food at home fell 1.51% in July, after rising 0.47% in June. Drops were observed in the prices of tomatoes (-31.24%), carrots (-27.43%), onions (-8.97%), potatoes (-7.48%) and fruits (-2.84%). Among the rises, ground coffee (3.27%), garlic (2.97%) and French rolls (0.67%) stood out.

Food away from home (0.39%) recorded a change close to that of the previous month (0.37%). The snack subitem accelerated from 0.39% to 0.74%, while meals slowed from 0.34% to 0.24%.

Regarding regional indexes, the largest changes occurred in São Luís and Rio Branco (0.53%), influenced by the increase in gasoline (5.78% and 2.43%, respectively). On the other hand, the smallest changes occurred in Salvador and Aracaju (0.18%), due to the decline in tomatoes (-22.31% and -26.00%).

The IPCA has been calculated by the IBGE since 1980, and refers to families with monetary income of 01 to 40 minimum wages, regardless of the source, and covers ten Metropolitan Areas of the country, in addition to the cities of Goiânia, Campo Grande, Rio Branco, São Luís, Aracaju and Brasília. To calculate the index for the month, prices collected in the period from June 29 to July 29, 2024 (reference) were compared with the prices in effect in the period from May 30 to June 28, 2024 (base).

INPC was 0.26% in July

The National Consumer Price Index - INPC was 0.26% in July, 0.01 pp above the result for June (0.25%). In the year, the INPC has accumulated an increase of 2.95% and, in the last 12 months, of 4.06%, above the 3.70% observed in the preceding 12 months. In July 2023, the rate had been -0.09%.

Food products fell 0.95% in July, after rising 0.44% in June. In turn, the change in non-food products accelerated from 0.19% in June to 0.65% in July.

As for regional indexes, São Luís showed the largest change (0.48%), due to the increase in gasoline (5.78%). The smallest change was observed in Salvador (0.02%), due to the decline in tomatoes (-22.31%).
