Quarterly livestock surveys - first results: slaughter of cattle increases and slaughter of chickens and of hogs and pigs drops in Q1 2024

The first results of livestock production in the first quarter of 2024 showed that, against the same period in 2023, slaughter of cattle increased by 24.1%, slaughter of chickens is down by 1.3% and that o hogs and pigs, by 1.8%. Against Q4 2023, cattle slaughter recorded an increase of 0.9%, chicken slaughter increased by 4.0% and slaughter of hogs and pigs fell by 1.6%.
A total of 6.20 billion liters of milk were acquired, 3.4% more than in the 1st quarter of 2023 and 4.0% less than in the immediately previous quarter.
Acquisition of rawhide by tanneries grew by 19.9% against the first quarter of 2023 and by 1.6% against the immediately previous quarter, adding up to 9.32 million rawhide pieces. A0 total of 1.10 billion dozens of hen eggs were produced in the first quarter this year, with increases of 6.5% in the year and of 4.0% in the quarter.

Cattle slaughter grows by 24.1% in the year and by 0.9% over the quarter
In Q1 2024, a total of 9.24 million cattle head under some sort of sanitary inspection were slaughtered. That amount represents a positive increase of 24.1% against Q1 2023, and an increase of 0.9% from Q4 2023.
The production of 2.8 million tonnes of cattle carcasses in the first quarter of 2024 represented an increase of 23.6% in relation to the same quarter a year ago and a drop of 2.1% in relation to the fourth quarter of 2023.
Chicken slaughter decreased by 1.3% in the annual comparison and increased by 4.0% in the quarterly one
In Q1 2024, 1.59 billion chicken head were slaughtered. This result meant a reduction of 1.3% from the same quarter in the previous year and an increase of 4.0% against the fourth quarter of 2023.
The cumulative weight of carcasses was of 3.36 million tonnes in the first quarter of 2024. That represented a decrease of 2.7% in relation to Q1 2023 and an increase of 5.4% against the immediately previous quarter.
Slaughter of hogs and pigs drops by 1.8% in the year and by 1.6% in the quarter
A total of 13.92 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered in Q1 2024, with drops of 1.8% from the same quarter in 2023 and of 1.6% from Q4 2023.
The cumulative weight of carcasses was 1.28 million tonnes in Q1 2024, with drops of 1.0% from Q1 2023 and of 1.6% from the immediately previous quarter.
Acquisition of milk increases by 3.4% in the annual comparison and drops by 4.0% from the previous quarter
The acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some kind of sanitary inspection (either federal, state or municipal) in Q1 2024 was of 6.20 billion liters. The value corresponded to an increase of 3.4% from Q1 2023 and a decrease of 4.0% against the amount obtained in the immediately previous quarter.
Acquisition of rawhide is up by 19.9% in the year and by 1.6% in the quarter
The tanneries investigated in the Quarterly Survey of Leather – those responsible for at least 5,000 whole pieces of cattle rawhide per year – reported to have received 9.32 million whole cattle rawhide pieces in the first quarter of 2024. That amount represented an increase of 19.9% compared with that recorded in the first quarter of 2023 and of 1.6% against the immediately previous quarter.
Production of hen eggs increases by 6.5% in the year and by 4.0% in the quarterly comparison
Production of hen eggs reached 1.10 billion dozen in the first quarter of 2024. That result represented increases of 6.5% against the same period a year ago and of 4.0% against Q4 2023.
