In February, retail trade sales increased by 1.0%

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the volume of retail trade sales increased by 1.0% in January 2024 from December. In the previous month, the change had been of 2.8%. The quarterly moving average changed by 0.7% in the quarter ended February.

In the unadjusted series , retail trade rose by 8.2% fro, February 2023, the ninth advance in a row. The cumulative index in the year was 6.15, whereas the cumulative index in the last 12 months, there was an increase of 2.3%.

As for extended retail trade , which emcompasses vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, volume of sales grew 1.2% over May in the seasonally-adjusted series. The quarterly moving average was 0.7%: In the unadjusted series, which also encompasses specialized wholesale in food, beverages and tobacco, the extended retail grew by 9.7%. The cumulative index in the year was 8.2%, whereas, regarding the cumulative index in 12 months, the cumulative change reached 3.6%.

In February, the Brazilian retail trade grew by 1.0% against the previous month, after having registered a drop in January (2.8%). That is the second consective onthly increase.  The last time retail trade increased for two months in a row was in September 2022 (0.5% in August and 0.70% in September).  As a result, trade reached the peak in the time series, exceeding by 0,5% the previous record level (October 2020) and 7.1% above the pre-pandemic level, of February 2020.

Six of the eight activities surveyed recorded increases from January

In February 2024, in the seasonally adjusted series, there were positive rates in six of the eight activities surveyed: Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (9.9%), Other personal and household articles (4.8%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery 93.2%), Furniture and household appliances (1.2%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (0.5%) and Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (0.3%).

Between January and February, there were negative rates in two of the eight groups of retail activities: Fuels and lubrificants (-2.7%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.2%).

The two additional activities that comprise the extended retail in this indicator behaved differently: Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces increased by 39% and Construction material changed by -0.2%.

Five retail activities advanced from February 2023

Against February 2023, five of the eight sectors surveyed in retail trade advanced: Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic  articles and toiletries (18.5%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (10.5%), Hyper and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (9.6%), Other personal and domestic articles (9.6%) and Furniture and domestic appliances (3.7%).

The other three sectors recorded negative rates in the same comparison: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-6.0%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (-0.5%) and Fuels and lubricants (-0.2%).

As for extended retail trade, the three additional activities that are considered against the same period a year ago recorded positive rates: Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (16.6%), Construction material (5.0%) and Specialized wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco (10.1%).

The sector of Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries increased by 18.5% in sales from February 2023. There were 12 consecutive months with increase for the interannual indicator (the last month recording a drop was February 2023: -0.5%).  As a result, the activity represents the second main contribution to the overall retail trade rate, amounting to 1.8 p.p out of 8.2%.  This sector accumulated -4.3% in the first two months of the year, a month less intense in losses than January (-7.6%). As for the cumulative result in the last 12 months, with a change from 5.9% up to January to 7.4% in February, the sector recorded acceleration of increase.

The activity of sales of Office, computer and communication equipment and material recorded an increase of 10.5% in sales from February 2023, second consecutive month with increase (in December 2023 the result was -0.9%, whereas January registered 4.3%).  In the first two months of 2024, this sector has a cumulative result of 7.2% from the same period in 2023 and in the last 12 months the figure, up to February, was 2.3%, above the cumulative result up to January 1.4%).

In February, the group hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco increased by 9.6% in sales against February 2023, the nineteenth consecutive month with increase in the interannual indicator (the last month) recording a negative rate was July 2022: -0.3%).  As a result, the sector was the one accounting mostly to the composition of the interannual retail trade rate, adding up to 5.3 p.p. out of 8.2%).  In the two-month period, the sector had a cumulative change of 7.9%, whereas in the last twelve months, the cumulative positive result is 4.7%.

After 21 months of consecutive drops, the activity entitled Other personal and household articles, which encompasses department stores, optical shops, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores and toy stores, etc., increased by 9.6% as for the interannual indicator (the last positive result of the interannual rate was in April 2022: 1.1%). As a result, the first two months of 2024, against the first two months of 2023, closed at 3.1%, interrupting a sequence of 21 months of cumulative losses. There was a cumulative drop of 9.1% up to February, less significant than the result up to January (-10.5%).

Furniture and household appliances recorded an increase of 3.7% in sales from February 2023, being the first month to record increase after two months: the result of January 2024 (0.1%) is interpreted as stability, whereas December 2023 recorded -3.3%). The sector started the year with a cumulative result in the first two months, against the same period in 2023, recording 1.8%. in the last 12 months there were increases of 0.9% up to February 2024.

The activity Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery recorded a decrease of 6.0% in sales from 2023, the thirteenth negative result for the interannual indicators (the last month recording increase was January 2023: 18.3%). In the first two months of 2024 the cumulative losses reached 7.7% and in the last 12 months, -8.0%.

Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear recorded a negative change of 0.5% in sales against February 2023, an opposite result to the positive change of 0.5% recorded in January. In the first two months of the year 2024, the sector recorded stability in relation to the same period a year ago (0.0%), with deceleration from January (0.5%). in the 12-month indicator the activity changed from -4.7% up to January 2024 to -4.2% up to February.

The sector of Fuels and lubricants changed by -0.2% in sales against February 2023. This result, which represents stability, follows an increase of 0.8% in January. In the last eight months the sector, for the interannual indicators, increased only in January 2024, with decreases in six months (from July to November 2023). In the first two months of 2024, there was a cumulative increase of 0.3% and in the year up to February the figure was 0.9%.

As for extended retail trade, companies that trade Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces increased by 16.6% in volume of sales against February 2023, with a positive result for the tenth consecutive month. Regarding extended retail trade, the sector accounted for the second main contribution among the elevem sectors surveyd, with 2.8 p p. out of 9.7% of the interannual result. The first two months of 2024 increased by 14.1% in relation to the same period a year ago, whereas the indicator in 12 months closed February at 10.1%.

Sales of Construction material increased by 5.0% from February 2023, above the figure in January (0.6%).  The first two months of 2024 also closed with increases (2.6% above the first two months of 2023).  The cumulative indicator in 12 months up to February (-1.1%) registered losses for 24 consecutive months (the last positive result was that of February 2022: +1.0%).

Also in extended retail, the activity of Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco increased by 10.1%, in the comparison between February 2024 and February 2023, seventh consecutive month with increase. The overall figure repreented 1.5 p.p out of 9.7% in the interannual indicator of retail trade, third main contribution in February.  In the year, there was cumulative increase of 13.2%, and in 12 months, of 4.1%.

Retail trade increases by 6.1% in the first two months of 2024

The first two months 2024, against the same period a year ago, increased by 6.1% of retail trade. In terms of sectors, there was a predominance of positive results, with six sectors recording positive figures: Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (12.7%), Hypermarkets and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (7.9%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (7.2%), Other personal and household articles (3.1%), Furniture and household appliances (1.8%) and Fuels and lubricants (0.3%).

Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery closed the two-month period with a drop of 7.7%, whereas Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear remainded stable (0.0%).

As for extended retail trade, the first two months of 2024 increased by 8.2% against the same period in 2023.  By sector, also for retail trade, Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces increased by 14.1%, Construction material, by 2.6% and Wholesale trade of food products, beverages and tobacco, by 13.2%.

Sales advance in 20 of the 27 Federation Units against January

From January to February 2024, in the seasonally adjusted series, the national average rate of retail trade sales was 1.0%, with positive figures in 20 out of 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to: Paraíba (5.7%), Amapá (5.2%) and Mato Grosso (4.3%).

On the other hand, six Federation Units recorded negative results between January and February, mainly:  Bahia (1.4%), Amazonas (-0.8%) and Paraná (-0.8%). Goiás remained stable (0.0%) from January to February.

In the same comparison for extended retail trade, the growth between January and February 2024 was 1.2%, with positive figures in 21 out of 27 Federation Units, the main ones being: Paraíba (5.2%), Pará (4.1%) and Goiás (3.5%). On the other hand, with negative results are 6 of the 27 Federation Units, among which stand out: Maranhão (-2.1%), Mato Grosso (-1.1%) and Espírito Santo (-1.1%).

All the 27 Federation Units recorded increases against the previous year

Against February 2023, the change of retail trade sales in the current month was 8.2%, with positive results in all the 27 Federation Units, mainly:  Paraíba (19.6%), Amapá (17.9%) and Mato Grosso (17.1%).

In extended retail trade, the change in February 2024 versus February 2023 was 9.7%, with positive results in 25 of the Federation Units, the main highlights being: Tocantins (19.3%), Paraíba (17.7%) and Amapá (17.0%). On the other hand, with negative results are Espírito Santo (-0.8%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-0.7%).
