Volume of services changes by 0.3% in December, and closes 2023 up by 2.3%

In December 2023, the volume of services in Brazil increased by 0.3% from November, in the seasonally adjusted series. That is the second positive result in a row, with a cumulative increase of 1.2% in the two last months in the year.

Against December 2022, without seasonal adjustment, volume of services recorded a drop of 2.0%, the most significant decrease since January 2021, when there was a decrease of 5.0%.

With this result, the cumulative index in the year, against the same period in 2022, closed the year up by 2.3%, having increased for the third year in a row, something not observed since the period 2012-2014.

As for the cumulative index in the last 12 months, the sector lost momentum, and changed from 3.1% in November to 2.3% in December 2023.

In December 2023, the sector of services was 11.7% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 1.7% below that of December 2022 (peak of the time series).

The positive change of 0.3% in volume of services from November to December 2023 was observed in three of the five activities, the main highlights being transportation (1.3%), which interrupted a sequence of four negative results, with cumulative loss of 5.4%; and of services rendered to families (3.5%), with a cumulative increase of 6.8% between November and December. The other positive result was that of information and communication services (0,2%), which recorded the third consecutive result, with cumulative gain of 1.8%.

On the other hand, professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.7%) and other services (-1.2%) were responsible for drops in the month, and both lost par of the increases recorded in the period October-November: 2.7% and 5.2%, respectively.

The quarterly moving average grew (0.2%) in the quarter ended December 2023 against the previous month. Among the sectors, also compared to the marginal movement of the index, there was dissemination of negative rates, since four of the five activities surveyed dropped from the level in the quarter ended September: transportation (-1.4%); services rendered to families (-1.1%); other services (-0.7%); and information and communication (-0.4%), while professional, administrative and complementary services (0.3%) accounted for the only negative result. As for this index, only transportation (-0.6%) dropped in December 2023. 

Against December 2022, volume of servicds recorded a decrease of 2.0% in December 2023, after an advance of 0.4% in the previous month. Three of the five activities this month recorded decreases, but tthat was concentrated in a smaller number of types of services investigated, since only 46.4% of the 166 recorded retreat from December 2022.

Among the sectors, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (-2.2%) represenaccounted for ted the main negative impact. The other drops came from other services (-10,.%) and professiona, administrative and complementary services (-1.6%).

Services rendered to families (7.6%); and information and communication (2.4%) accounted for the mai positive contributions on the total volume pf services.

As for the cumulative index in the year, against the same period a year ago, the services sector expanded 8.4%, with positive rates in four out of five dissemination activities and an increase in 66.9% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sectors, the main positive contributions were those from information and communication (3.4%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (3.7%). Other retreats came from transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (1.5%) and services rendered to families (4.7%).

In contrast, other services (-1.8%) exerted the only negative influence on the cumulative index in the year.

Services grew in 18 of 27 Federation Units in December

Against November, there were increases in 18 of the 27 Federation Units. The main positive impact came from São Paulo (0.6%), followed by the Federal District (2.8%) Santa Catarina (1.8%) and Paraná (0.8%).

On the other hand, Rio de Janeiro (-2.6%), followed by Minas Gerais (-1.4%), Mato Grosso (-2.6%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-4.1%) accounted for the main negative results.

Against September 2022, drops in volume of services in Brazil (-1.2%) were registered in 10 of the 27 Federation Units. The most relevant negative influence came from São Paulo (-4.1%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (-7.6%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.9%).

Conversely, Paraná (8.8%), followed by Santa Catarina (4.5%) and Mato Grosso (8.9%) registered the main advances this month.

As for the cumulative index in the year, the increase in volume of services in Brazil (2.3%) was widespread over the areas surveyed, since 25 of the 27 Federation Units also recorded increases in real services revenue. The biggest positive impacts in regional terms occurred in Minas Gerais (7.7%), Paraná (11.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (3.3%), followed by Mato Grosso (16.4%), Santa Catarina (8.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (4.4%).

On the other hand, São Paulo (-1.8%) and Amapá (-2.2%) registered the only negative influences on the national index.

Tourism activities increase by 1.4% in December and 6.9% in 2023

In December 2023, the index of tourism activities increased by 1.4% against the immediately previous month, the two consecutive negative results, a period with a cumulative loss of 3.3%. As a result, the tourism segment was 3.6% above the level of February 2020 and 3.7% below the peak of the time series, reached in February 2014.

In regional terms, all the 12 places surveyed followed the expansion movement registered in the national tourism activity (1.4%). The most relevant positive contributions were those of Rio de Janeiro (4.2%) and São Paulo (1.1%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul (8.1%), Ceará (10.5%) and Santa Catarina (4.8%).

With negative results, Federal District (-3.9%) and Espírito Santo (-7.4%) recorded the main decreases in regional terms.

In the comparison between December 2023 and December 2022, the volume of tourism activities in Brazil increased by 1.4%, and recorded the 33rd consecutive positive rate. In regional terms, seven of the 12 Federation Units in which the indicator is measured registered an advance in tourism services, with São Paulo (3.8%) as the highlight, followed by Rio de Janeiro (9.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (8.1%).

In contrast, Federal District (-18.8%), Ceará (-14.1%) and Espírito Santo (-13.9%) accounted for the main negative impacts - Graph 9.

As for the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities increased by 6.9% - against the same period a year ago. Ten of the 12 areas surveyed also recorded positive rates, among which the following ones stood out: São Paulo (6.5%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (11.5%), Minas Gerais (15.0%), Bahia (12.2%), Bahia (11.4%) and Paraná (10.0%).

On the other hand, Ceará (-3.2%) and Federal District (-1.1%) accounted for the only negative results.

Passenger transportation drops by 1.0% in December and closes the year 0.7% down

In December 2023, volume of passenger transportation in Brazil retreated 1.0% from the immediately previous month in the seasonally-adjusted series, the fourth consecutive negative rate, a period with reported cumulative loss of 7.8%. The segment was 8.8% below the level of February 2020, prior to the pandemic, and 29.7% below that of February 2014 (peak of the time series).

Against the same month a year ago, without seasonal adjustment, there was a drop of 15.9% in December 2023, after a drop of 8.0%.

As for the cumulative indicator between January and December 2023, passeneger transportation recorded a drop of 0.7% from the same period in 2022.

Cargo transportation decreases by 0.9% in December with an increase of 7.8% in 2023

In December 2023, volume of cargo transportation pointed to a drop of 0.9% in December 2023, after a positive change of 0.3% in November. Therefore, this segment was, in December, 5.3% below the peak of the series (July 2023). In comparison with the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation was 35.7% above that of February 2020.

Against the same month a year ago, there was a change of 0.2%, which represents the 40th consecutive positive result.

As for the cumulative index between January and December 2023, cargo trasnportation registered an advance of 7.8% against the same period in 2022.
