Industry advances in nine out of 15 places surveyed in November

With the advance of 0.5% in the national industry in November, in the seasonally-adjusted series, nine out of 15 places surveyed by the IBGE registered positive rates. The biggest advances were in Paraná (5.4%), Espírito Santo (4.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (3.7%), whereas Goiás (3.3%), Bahia (2.7%), Minas Gerais (2.5%), Ceará (2.0%), São Paulo (1.9%) and Pará (1.7%) completed the places with positive indexes this month.

The most intense drops were in Pernambuco (-9.7%) and Amazonas (-4.2%), whereas Rio Grande do Sul (-2.9%), Mato Grosso (-1.5%), Northeast Region (-1.2%) and Santa Catarina (-0.7%) recorded the other negative results in November.

The quarterly moving average of industry was 0.2% in the quarter ended in November, with positive rates in eight out of 15 places surveyed, highlighting the steepest advances in Pará (4.7%), Paraná (2.9%), Goiás (2.7%), Bahia (2.4%), Ceará (2.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.9%).

Compared with November 2022, 12 out of 18 places surveyed rose, with two-digit advances in Paraná (21.2%), Espírito Santo (18.5%), Goiás (16.6%), Pará (12.8%), Rio de Janeiro (10.5%) and Mato Grosso (10.0%). It is worth mentioning that November 2023 (20 days) had the same number of business days as the same month a year ago (20).

In the seasonally-adjusted series, nine out of 15 places surveyed showed positive rates in November. The biggest advances were in Paraná (5.4%), Espírito Santo (4.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (3.7%), the first place registering the fourth consecutive month of growth in the output, a period in which it accumulated a gain of 14.5%; the second one offsetting part of the cumulative loss of 7,1% in the September-October 2023 period; and the third place growing once again, after retreating 1.3% in the previous month. Goiás (3.3%), Bahia (2.7%), Minas Gerais (2.5%), Ceará (2.0%), São Paulo (1.9%) and Pará (1.7%) completed the set of places with positive indexes this month..

In contrast, Pernambuco (-9.7%) and Amazonas (-4.2%) recorded the most intense retreats in the output, the former offsetting the advance of 9.8% reported in October and the latter registering the third consecutive month of drop in the production, a period in which it accumulated a reduction of 15.1%. Rio Grande do Sul (-2.9%), Mato Grosso (-1.5%), Northeast Region (-1.2%) and Santa Catarina (-0.7%) recorded the other negative figures in November.

The quarterly moving average index for the overall industry changed 0.2% in the quarter ended in November 2023 against the level in the previous month, thus registering the second consecutive positive rate, after recording a null change (0.0%) in the months of September, August and July. Eight out of 15 places surveyed reported positive rates, highlighted by the sharpest advances registered in Pará (4.7%), Paraná (2.9%), Goiás (2.7%), Bahia (2.4%), Ceará (2.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.9%). The major retreats were in Amazonas (-5.3%), Pernambuco (-4.9%), Mato Grosso (-2.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-2.4%).

In the comparison with November 2022, the industrial sector grew 1.3% in November 2023, showing positive figures in 12 out of 18 places surveyed. It is worth mentioning that November 2023 (20 days) had the same number of business days as the same month a year ago (20).

This month, Paraná (21.2%), Espírito Santo (18.5%), Goiás (16.6%), Pará (12.8%), Rio de Janeiro (10.5%) and Mato Grosso (10.0%) recorded two-digit advances and the steepest ones, leveraged by the positive behavior of the sectors of coke, petroleum products and biofuels (diesel fuel, liquefied petroleum gas, motor gasoline, petroleum asphalt, fuel oils and aviation kerosene) in the first place, and of mining and quarrying industries (pelletized or sintered iron ore and crude petroleum oil) and pulp, paper and paper products (pulp) in the second one.

Bahia (8.4%), Maranhão (5.0%), Santa Catarina (2.2%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (2.2%) also recorded more intense advances than the national average (1.3%), whereas Ceará (0.9%) and Minas Gerais (0.2%) completed the places that grew their output in the monthly index of November 2023.

On the other hand, Amazonas (-10.3%) reported a two-digit retreat and the highest one this month, pressed, to a great extent, by the activity of computer equipment, electronic and optical products (TVs, cellular phones, devices to receive, convert and transmit images or data, mounted printed circuit boards, receivers-decoders of encoded video signals and radios for motor vehicles). Rio Grande do Sul (-4.4%), Rio Grande do Norte (-2.8%), Pernambuco (-1.8%), São Paulo (-0.3%) and Northeast Region (-0.1%) recorded the other negative results this month.

Comparing the second period of four months with the second period of four months of 2023, against the same periods a year ago, 11 out of 18 places surveyed gained dynamism, following the national trend, which changed from 0.3% to 1.0%. In regional terms, Paraná (from -0.5% to 18.9%), Ceará (from -10.2% to -2.8%), Goiás (from 4.7% to 12.0%), Mato Grosso do Sul (from -3.3% to 4.0%), Pará (from 4.2% to 10.4%), Bahia (from -4.2% to 1.9%), Maranhão (from -8.0% to -3.5%) and Santa Catarina (from -1.9% to 2.3%) registered the steepest gains, whereas Rio Grande do Norte (from 29.8% to 6.7%), Amazonas (from 1.3% to -6.6%), Pernambuco (from 5.5% to 1.6%), Minas Gerais (from 2.8% to -0.1%) and Mato Grosso (from 10.3% to 8.1%) recorded the major losses between the two periods.

In the cumulative index in the year over the same period a year ago, the industrial sector registered a positive change of 0.1%, with positive results in ten out of 18 places surveyed, highlighted by Rio Grande do Norte (12.2%) and Espírito Santo (9.4%). Mato Grosso (5.4%), Goiás (4.9%), Pará (4.5%), Rio de Janeiro (4.4%), Paraná (4.2%), Minas Gerais (3.2%), Amazonas (2.4%) and Pernambuco (0.9%) completed the set of places that advanced their output in the cumulative index in the year.

On the other hand, Ceará (-5.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.4%) and Northeast Region (-4.0%) recorded the sharpest drops, followed by Maranhão (-3.4%), Bahia (-2.4%), Santa Catarina (-1.7%), São Paulo (-1.4%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-0.2%).

The cumulative index over the last 12 months registered a null change (0.0%) in November, repeating the stability noticed in the last months: October (0.0%), September (0.0%), August (-0.1%), July (0.0%), June (0.1%) and May (0.0%). Eight out of 15 places surveyed had positive rates in November 2023 and 11 of them were more dynamic over October. Paraná (from 1.0% to 3.5%), Pará (from 0.6% to 3.1%), Espírito Santo (from 4.4% to 6.8%), Pernambuco (from -2.8% to -1.2%), Bahia (from -4.4% to -3.0%), Mato Grosso (from 3.5% to 4.9%), Northeast Region (from -5.9% to -4.8%), Ceará (from -7.0% to -6.0%) and Santa Catarina (from -2.6% to -1.6%) recorded the major gains, whereas Amazonas (from 2.4% to 1.5%) reported the major loss.
