Retail sales remain stable (0.0%) in June

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of sales in the retail trade remained stable (0.0%) in June 2023 over May. The quarterly moving average for the retail was -0.3% in the quarter ended in June. In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the retail trade rose 1.3% over June 2022.

The retail accumulated 1.3% in the first semester of 2023 in relation to the same period in 2022. In the cumulative index over the last 12 months, the retail registered the ninth consecutive month on the positive side, reaching 0.9% in June 2023.

As for extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, volume of sales grew 1.2% over May in the seasonally-adjusted series. As a result, the quarterly moving average for the extended retail was -0.5%.

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the extended retail grew 8.3% over June 2022. The cumulative index in the year went to 4.0% and the cumulative index in 12 months, to 1.1%.

In June, the Brazilian retail trade was 3.3% below the peak of the time series (October 2020) and 3.0% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020).

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of sales of the activities of the retail trade remained balanced between negative and positive rates between May and June 2023.

Fabric, apparel and footwear (1.4%), hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.3%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (1.2%) and Furniture and domestic appliances (0.8%) grew, whereas Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-3.7%), Other articles of personal and domestic use (-0.9%), Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic  articles and toiletries (-0.7%) and Fuels and lubricants (-0.6%) were the activities that dropped.

In the case of the activities of the extended retail trade, that of Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories grew 8.5% in June over May, whereas the sector of Construction material changed -0.3%.

Half of the activities increased over June 2022

The comparison between June 2023 and June 2022 was balanced as well. The four activities that rose were Fuels and lubricants (9.9%), Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (3.8%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (3.1%) and Furniture and household appliances (2.6%). The four ones that dropped were: Other articles of personal and domestic use (-14.9%); Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-8.9%); Fabric, apparel and footwear (-6.3%); and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-3.5%),

Two out of three complementary activities rose in the extended retail trade: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories (17.9%) and Wholesale specialized in food products, beverages and tobacco (21.2%) grew, whereas Construction material dropped (-2.7%).

Four activities rose in the first semester of 2023

Four activities of the retail trade rose in the first semester of 2023 against the same semester a year ago: Fuels and lubricants (14.5%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (2.6%), Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (2.2%) and Furniture and household appliances (1.0%).

Four sectors closed the semester down: Other articles of personal and domestic use
(-13.7%); Fabric, apparel and footwear (-9.0%); Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-1.7%); and Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-0.7%).

In the extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories closed the first semester up (5.4%), as well as Wholesale specialized in food products, beverages and tobacco (8.3%). On the other hand, Construction material retreated (-3.6%).

In the quarterly analysis, five activities dropped

In sectoral terms, five out of eight retail activities recorded negative rates in the second quarter of 2023: Other articles of personal and domestic use (-16.8%), Textiles, wearing apparel and footwear (-12.2%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material
(-6.4%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-5.6%) and Furniture and household appliances (-0.3%).  Completing the inter-sectoral distribution, three activities grew in the quarter: Fuels and lubricants (9.7%), Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (4.9%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (2.6%).

In the extended retail, two out of three additional activities rose: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories (5.8%) and Wholesale specialized in food products, beverages and tobacco (17.2%). The activity of Construction material registered a negative performance in the period (-4.0%).

Sales of fuels and hypermarkets have a sequence of rises

The sector of Fuels and lubricants rose 9.9% in sales over June 2022, adding up to 16 consecutive months of positive results.  In the first six months of 2023, this sector accumulated 14.5% of gain in relation to the same period in 2022. In the last 12 months, this activity grew 21.1% up to June.

The activity of Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic  articles and toiletries increased 3.8% in sales over June 2022, the fourth month of growth in a row. The inter-annual comparison for June 2023 was the second lowest in magnitude over the last months, just surpassing the change in February 2023 in relation to February 2022 (3.2%). This sector accumulated a growth of 2.2% in the first semester of 2023. In the last 12 months, the scenario was of a rise of 3.5% up to June.

Considering the data of June 2023, the sector of Hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco hit 11 consecutive months of rises in the inter-annual indicator: 3.1% in sales in June 2023 over June 2022. This sector accumulated a growth of 2.6% in the first semester of 2023. In the cumulative rate in 12 months, it hit 2.4% up to June.

In the case of Furniture and domestic appliances, the sector rose 2.6% in sales over June 2022, the second consecutive positive figure in the comparison between a month against the same month a year ago. Concerning the cumulative index in the year up to June, this sector closed the first semester of 2023 at 1.0%. In terms of the cumulative result over the last 12 months, the scenario was of losses: -1.9% up to June 2023.

The activity of Other articles of personal and domestic use, which encompasses department, optical, jewelry, sports and toy stores, among others, registered the fourteenth drop in the inter-annual indicator: the last month it grew was April 2022 over May 2021 (1.1%), whereas the June´s result was -14.9% in relation to the same month in the previous year. As a result, this sector accumulated -13.7% in the first semester of 2023. It registered the most intense drop (-13.3%) of a sequence of 13 negative months in the cumulative rate over the last 12 months.

Volume of sales of Office, computer and communication equipment and material fell 8.9% over June 2022, the third consecutive month on the negative side. Concerning the cumulative index in the year up to June, the result was negative (-0.7%) compared with the same period in 2022. Having changed from 1.9% up to May to 1.0% in June in terms of the cumulative result over the last 12 months, this sector decreased the pace of growth.

The activity of Fabric, apparel and footwear fell 6.3% in sales over June 2022. Such figure was the fifth in a row. The first semester of 2023 accumulated losses of 9.0% in relation to the same period in 2022. The scenario also decelerated in the last 12 months: -10.3% up to May against -11.0% up to June.

The inter-annual figure for Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery was -3.5% in relation to June 2022. It was the fifth month of drops. In the semester, the cumulative loss was of 1.7%, the same level as the cumulative result up to May (-1.5%). In the last 12 months, the result was 4.0% up to June, 0.5 p.p. below the result up to May 2023 (4.5%).

In the extended retail, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories grew 17.9% over June 2022, maintaining the positive trend of the previous month. In the year, this sector accumulated 5.4% in relation to the same period of 2022, a result higher than that accumulated up to May (2.9%). The cumulative index over the last 12 months accelerated, changing from -1.4% up to May to 0.6% in June.

The inter-annual figure for Construction material was negative for the fifth month in a row: -2.7% in sales over June 2022. In the year, this sector accumulated -3,6% of growth. The cumulative indicator over the last 12 months decreased the losses for the fourth consecutive month, reaching -7.0% up to June.

The activity of Wholesale specialized in food products, beverages and tobacco hit the fourth consecutive month of rises in the inter-annual comparison, recording 21.3% in June. As a result, the first semester of 2023 accumulated gains of 8.3%.

Sales increase in 22 Federation Units against May

In June, 22 out of 27 Federation Units reported positive figures, highlighted by: Alagoas (2.7%), Acre (2.6%) and Paraíba (2.2%). Pressing negatively, the highlights on the other side were Minas Gerais (-1.3%), Tocantins (-0.9%) and Pernambuco (-0.9%).

In the same comparison, the extended retail trade changed 1.2% between May and June 2023, with positive figures in 25 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by Maranhão (7.6%), Alagoas (6.7%) and Bahia (6.6%). On the other hand, Tocantins (-1.1%) and Pernambuco (-1.8%) pressed negatively.

Sales rise in 23 out of 27 Federation Units in the inter-annual comparison

Compared with June 2022, sales in the retail trade rose in 23 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Tocantins (14.3%), Maranhão (10.5%) and Acre (10.3%). In contrast, Rio Grande do Sul (-1.7%), Rondônia (-2.7%), Piauí (-3.2%) and Paraíba (-3.6%) pressed negatively.

On the other hand, the extended retail trade rose 8.3% between June 2023 and June 2022, with positive figures in 24 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Bahia (26.9%), Pará (24.9%) and Maranhão (23.1%). In contrast, Roraima (-0.7%), Goiás (-2.1%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-9.5%) pressed negatively.
