Continuous PNAD: unemployment rate is 8.0% and underutilization rate is 17.8% in quarter ended in June

The unemployment rate (8.0%) of the quarter between April and June 2023 dropped 0.8 percentage points (pp) in relation to the quarter ended in March 2023 (8.8%) and 1.3 pp against the same period of the previous year (9.3%). This is the lowest unemployment rate for a quarter ended in June since 2014.

The unemployed population (8.9 million persons) also reduced in both comparisons: -8.3% (785 thousand less persons) over the previous quarter and -14.2% (1.4 million less persons) in the year.
The employed population (98.9 million person) grew 1.1% (1.1 million more persons) in relation to the previous moving quarter and 0.7% (641 thousand more persons) against the same quarter of 2022.
The employment-population ratio - percentage of employed persons in the population at working age - was 56.6%, having risen 0.5 pp in the quarter and being stable in the year.
The composite underutilization rate (17.8%) reduced 1.0 pp in relation to the quarter of January and March 2023 and fell 3.4 pp in the year. The underutilized population (20.4 million) feel 5.7 in the previous quarter and retreated 17.7% in the year.
The time-related underemployed population (5.1 million) stood stable against the previous quarter and decreased in relation to the same quarter a year ago.
The population out of the workforce (67.1 million persons) remained stable against the previous quarter and grew 3.6% (2.3 million more persons) against the same quarter of 2022.
The discouraged population (3.7 million persons) fell 5.1 % against the previous quarter (199 thousand less persons) and dropped 13.9% in the annual comparison. The percentage of discouraged workers in the workforce or discouraged population (3.3%) dropped 0.2 pp over the quarter quarter and 0.5 pp. in the year.
The number of workers with a formal employment contract in the private sector (except domestic workers) amounted to 36.8 million persons, being stable against the previous quarter and having increased 2.8% (991 thousand more persons) in the annual comparison.
The number of persons employed without a formal contract in the private sector (13.1 million) grew 2.4% against the previous quarter (303 thousand more persons). It remained stable against the same quarter last year.
The number of self-employed workers (25.2 million) remained stable in relation to the previous quarter, yet it reduced 491 thousand persons in the year.
The number of domestic workers (5.8 million) increased 2.6% in the comparison with the previous quarter and remained stable in relation to the same quarter a year ago.
The number of employees in the public sector (12.2 million persons) grew 3.8% compared to the previous quarter and 3.1% in the annual comparison.
The informality rate for the quarter ended in June 2023 was of 39.2%, against a rate of 39.0%, in the quarter ended in March 2023, and of 40.0% in the quarter ended in June 2022.
The usual real earnings (R$2,921.00) stood stable against the previous quarter and increased 6.2% in the year. The usual real wage bill (R$284.1 billion) was also stable from the previous quarter, but increased 7.2% in the annual comparison.
Unemployment Rate - Brazil - 2012/2023
In the moving quarter between April and June 2023, the workforce (employed and unemployed persons) was estimated at 107.6 million persons, remaining stable against the quarter from January to March 2023, and dropping 793 thousand persons against the same quarter last year.
Compared with the previous moving quarter, according to the activity groups investigated by the survey, the group of Public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services increased (4.2% or 716 thousand more persons). The other groups did not record significant changes.
In relation to the quarter from April to June 2022, there were increases in: Transportation, storage and mailing (4.3% or 221 thousand more persons), Information, communication and financial, real estate, professional and administrative activities (2.9% or 344 thousand more persons) and Public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services (4.6% or 793 thousand more persons). The following groups recorded decreases: Agriculture, livestock, forestry, phishing and aquaculture (5.0% or 440 thousand less persons) and Construction (4.6% or 345 thousand less persons).

The average usual real earnings (R$2,921) of all groups remained stable over the previous quarter. The following groups increased in the annual comparison: Agriculture, livestock, forestry, fishery and aquaculture (7.1% or R$124 more), Industry (4.3% or R$115 more), Construction (7.8% or R$169), Trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (7.1% or R$161 more), Housing and food (8.2% or R$146 more), Public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services (5.0% or R$193 more) and Domestic services (6.5% or R$70 more). The other groups did not record significant changes.
Among the employment types, against the previous quarter, there was stability in all categories. IN the comparison with the same quarter a year ago, there was increase in the following categories: Employees with a formal contract (3.3% or R$87 more), Domestic workers (6.5% or R$70 more), Employees in the public sector including statutory officials and the military, (4.1% or R$171 more), Employers (17.4% or R$1,108 more) and Self-employed persons (7.8% or R$169 more).
