Retail sales drop by 1.0% in May

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the volume of sales of retail trade dropped by 0.1% from April. The quarterly moving average was -0.1%.

In the non-adjusted series, retail trade dropped by 1.0% from May 2022, with the first negative rate after three months of rises. The cumulative index in the year reached 1.3% and the cumulative index in the last 12 months0.8%.

As for extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, volume of sales dropped by 1.1% (seasonally-adjusted series). The quarterly moving average was 0.1%. In the non-adjusted series, extended retail trade increased by 3.0% against May 2022, fifth consecutive month with positive changes.

In the cumulative index in the year, there was an increase of 3.1% against the same period in 2022, whereas considering the cumulative index in 12 months, the change was 0.2%.

Retail trade in the country recorded a decrease (-1.0%) from April to May. As a result, the level of the seasonally-adjusted time series is 3.6% below the record of October 2020.

Activities have four positive rates and four negative rates in the seasonally adjusted series

With the decrease of 1.0% in volume of sales, in te seasonally adjusted series, the activities of retail trade were balanced with positive and negative rates.

Four activities recorded decreases. Fabric, apparel and footwear (-3.3%), Hyper and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-3.2%). Other personal and domestic articles (-2.3%) and Furniture and household appliances (-0.7%). Other four activities recorded increases: Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (2.3%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (1.7%), Fuels and lubricants (1.4%) and Ofice, computer and communication material and equipment (1.1%).

In the case of extended retail trade, the balance remains: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories increased by 2.1%, whereas Construction material dropped by 0.9% from April and May 2023.

Against May 2022, half of the activities recorded decreases

In the comparison between May 2023 and May 2022, retail trade also had a balance between negative and positive rates. Four of the eight activities surveyed had drops in sales. Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (-18.2%), Other personal and domestic articles (-17.4%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-6.7%) and Office, computer and communication equipment and material (-4.9%).

The four sectors recording positive results were: Fuels and lubricants (10.8%), Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (7.6%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.5%) and Furniture and household appliances (0.3%).

As for

extended retail trade

, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded an increase of 1.6%, Construction material dropped by 2.0% and Wholesale trade of food products, beverages and tobacco increased by 18.1% between May 2022 and May 2023.

The sector Fabric, apparel and footwear dropped by 18.2% in sales from May 2022, the fourth consecutive decrease. In the year, the sector had a cumulative loss of 9.7% up to May accelerating the decrease in the last few months. The intensity of increase also reduced as for the cumulative index in 12 months: from -7.9% up to April to -10.3% up to May.

The group Other articles of personal and domestic use, which encompasses department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting good stores and toy stores, dropped by 17.4% against May 2022, the thirteenth negative result for the interannual indicator. The sector has been affected by the reduction of physical shops of major chains. The cumulative index in the year went from -12.4% up to April to -13.5% up to May. The cumulative index in the last 12 months changed from -12.2% up to April to -13.1% in May.

The activity of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery decreased by 6.7% in sales from May 2022, same level as the decrease from April 2023 against April 2022. -6.6 The cumulative index in the year changed from -0.5% up to April to -1.5% in May. The cumulative index in the last 12 months dropped from 6.6% up to April to 4.5% up to May.

The sector Office, computer and communication equipment and material dropped by 4.9% against May 2022, against a change of -5.8% in April 2023, against April 2023. Throughout 2023, the interannual indicator registered two months with positive results and three other with negative results. In the year, the sector has had a cumulative decrease in gains for the fifth consecutive month and registered 0.9% up to May. There was also a decline in the pace of increase of the cumulative index in the last 12 months, reachng 1.9% in May.

Volume of sales of the activity Fuels and lubricants increased by 10.8% against May 2022, resulting in 16 consecutive months of increase. In the year, this sector has a cumulative result of 15.5%, 1.4 p.p below the figure observed up to April (16.9%). The cumulative index in the last 12 months remained at the same level as in the last four months and reached 21.0% in May.

Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries recorded an increase of 7.6% in sales against May 2022, third consecutive month with an increase. This sector had a cumulative 1.9% in the year, a level above the cumulative figure up to April (0.5%), indicating acceleration of increase of this sector. The cumulative result in the last 12 months closed at 3.9%, similar to those in the last two survey editions.

Hyper and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco recorded an increase of 1.3.5% in sales from May 2022, against an increase of 3% in April 2023, as for the interannual indicator. Having changed from 2.8% to 2.5% in the reference month, the cumulative index in the year up to May shows a stable pace of increase in 2023. The cumulative index in the last 12 months was 2.1% up to April and 2.3% up to May.

Furniture and household appliances changed by 0.3% in sales against May 2022, a result followed by a decrease of 3.8% in April, in the interannual indicator. As for the cumulative index in the year, the two last results remained at a level below the 1.0% of increasse: 0.8% up to April and 0.7% up to May. Regarding the last 12 months, the result up to May was -3.3% in May, 20th consecutive year recording decrease.

Sales of Construction material dropped by 2.0% against May 2022, fourth consecutive decrease. The cumulative index in the year is -3.8%, a less significant decrease than in April (-4.3%). The cumulative index in the last 12 months went from -8.3% up to April to -7.8% in May.

Sales of the group Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces grew by 1.6% from May 2022, and reversed the result of April (-2.0%), versus the same month a year ago. The cumulative index in the year up to May went from 3.3% up to April to 2.9% up to May.

The cumulative index in 12 months was -1.4%. This indicador has ranged between -1.4% and -1.7% since December 2022 (-1.7% up to December 2022; -1.5% up to January 2023; -1.4% up to February; -1.5% up to March; and -1.4% up to April).

In the case of Wholesale of food products , beverages and tobacco, the comparison with the same month a year ago had a positive result for the third consecutive month: 5.4% from MArch; 12.0% in April and 18.1% in May. In the year, the sector had cumulative increases of 5.6% up to May, a result above the cumulative figure up to April (2.4%).  

Sales drop in 23 Federation Units from April

In the seasonally-adjusted series, retail trade changed recorded negative figures in 23 of the 27 Federation Units, mainly in: Alagoas (-5.9%), Rondônia (-.%) and Paraíba (-4.6%). There were positive changes in three of the 27 Federation Units: Tocantins (1.8%), Maranhão (0.4%) and Minas Gerais (0.4%), whereas Amazonas remained stable (0.0%).

In the same comparison, extended retail trade recored negative results in 22 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to: Mato Grosso do Sul (-7.0%), Maranhão (-4.8%) and Minas Gerais (-4.7%). On the other hand, five Federation Units recorded positive results, with a highlight to Pará (5.8%), Ceará (2.3%) and Amazonas (1.9%).

Sales drop in 11 of the 27 Federation Units in the annual comparison

From May 2022, retail trade sales dropped in 11 of the 27 Federation Unis, mainly in: Rio Grande do Sul (-4.8%), Rondônia (-4.6%) and Piauí (-4.5%). On the other hand, there were positive changes in 16 Federation Units, especially in Tocantins (17.1%), Maranhão (12.2%) and Mato Grosso (6.0%).

Extended retail trade had positive results in 19 of the 27 Federation Units, among which Tocantins (19.4%), Pará (15.7%) and Bahia (11.5%) stand out. On the other hand, eight Federation Units accounted for negative contributions, the main ones being: Mato Grosso do Sul (-14.0%), Federal District (-4.4%) and Goiás (-3.8%).
