In January, retail sales are up 3.8%

In January 2023, the domestic retail trade sales volume increased by 3.8% compared to the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series. As a result, the quarterly moving average for retail was 0.1% in the quarter ended in January. Compared to January 2022, retail trade sales grew by 2.6%, their sixth consecutive increase. The cumulative index in the last 12 months (1.3%) surpassed that of December (1.0%).

In the extended retail trade, which includes, in addition to retail, the activities of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, Construction material and Wholesale specialized in food, beverages and tobacco, the volume of sales changed by 0.2% compared to December 2022. The moving average for the quarter ended in January was 0.0%. Compared to January 2022, extended retail sales grew by 0.5%. In the last 12 months, extended retail accumulated a decrease of -0.5%, a result close to that of December (-0.6%).

In January 2023, seven out of eight activities of retail trade had positive rates: Textiles, wearing apparel and footwear (27.9%), Office, computer and communication material and equipment (7.4%), Hyper, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (2.3%), Other articles for personal and domestic use (2.0%), Fuels and lubricants (1.5%), Furniture and household appliances (1.3%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (0.6%). The only drop was in Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles: -1.2%.

The two additional activities, which make up extended retail, had opposite trajectories: Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces changed by -0.2% and Construction Material grew by 2.9%.

Trade grows 2.6% compared to January 2022, with increases in six of the eight activities

In relation to January 2022, the retail trade sales volume increased by 2.6%, with increases in six of the eight surveyed activities: Fuels and lubricants (26.7%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (15.2 %), Office, computer and communication equipment and supplies (14.8%), Furniture and household appliances (3.4%), Textiles, wearing apparel and Footwear (2.3%) and Hyper and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (2.2%).

The two activities with falling sales were Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles (-7.6%) and Other articles for personal and domestic use (-6.5%).

Considering extended retail trade, Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces increased by 4.4% compared to January 2022, Construction Material increased by 1.1% and Wholesale of food products, beverages and tobacco fell by 0.9%.

Sales by the Fuels and lubricants rose 26.7% compared to January 2022. This result was higher than that of December 2022 (23.8%), compared to the same period of the previous year. Since February 2022, the sector has shown positive results in this comparison. In the cumulative result for the last twelve months, the sector continued to grow (19.4%), with an increase in pace in relation to the previous cumulative result (16.6%).

The sector of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery grew 15.2% compared to January 2022, the highest positive rate since September 2022, when it had registered 31.0%. In twelve months, the sector accumulates a rise of 13.9%, a rate lower than that of December 2022 (14.8%).

The group Office equipment and material, information technology and communication in the interannual comparison, grew 14.8% compared to January 2022, the first after two months of changes close to stability (-0.2% in November and 0.1% in December 2022). The cumulative index in the last twelve months went from 1.7% until December 2022 to 3.4% in January.

The Furniture and appliances group grew 3.4% in sales compared to January 2022, the third increase in the positive field after seven months of decline. The cumulative result for the last twelve months (-5.6%) has remained in the negative sphere since October 2021 (-0.7%).

After six months of decreases in the interannual indicator (-16.2%, -5.5%, -9.5%, -15.0%, -16.4% and -11.9% in July, August, September , October, November and December 2022, respectively), sales in Textiles, apparel and footwear grew by 2.3% in January 2023. The activity was one of those that most accumulated losses in the initial period of the Covid-19 pandemic, in 2020, with subsequent recovery in 2021. The 12-month index was negative in December and January (-0.5%, in both months).

With an increase of 2.2% compared to January 2022, the activity of Hyper, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco registered the third consecutive increase in the interannual indicator.

The sector of Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic and perfumery articles fell by 7.6%, in the comparison of the month against the same month of the previous year, the first result in the negative sphere in the interannual indicator since October 2021 (-0.2%). In terms of accumulated result in the last twelve months, from 6.3% until December 2022 to 4.5% until January 2023, the sector shows a decrease in the intensity of growth.

Companies of Other articles of personal and domestic use, a sector that includes department stores, opticians, jewelry, sporting goods, toy stores, etc., accounted for -6.5% compared to January 2022, the ninth consecutive drop, despite being the least intense in the interannual indicator. In addition, the cumulative indicator in the last 12 months continues to fall (-8.5% for January 2023) since June 2022.

In extended retail trade, sales of Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces rose 4.4% compared to January 2022, the first increase, on an interannual basis, since May 2022 (0.8%). The cumulative result for the last twelve months, however, was negative for the sixth month (-1.5%).

The Construction material sector grew by 1.1% compared to January 2022, after nine months of decline in this comparison. The sector also stood out for its growth at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, with positive results from June 2020 (22.6%) to June 2021 (5.4%), starting a downward trend since then (only March 2022 had a positive result: 1.2%). In the last twelve months, the accumulation is -8.1%, less intense than in previous months: -8.8% until November and -8.7 until December 2022.

Finally, sales of Wholesale companies specialized in food, beverages and tobacco decreased by 0.9% in January 2023, compared to January 2022.

Sales increase in 23 FUs compared to December 2022

In January 2023, in the seasonally adjusted series, retail trade had positive results in 23 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to: Espírito Santo (8.8%), Tocantins (8.7%) and Roraima (7. 4%). On the other hand, pressing negatively, the highlight is Mato Grosso (-1.7%), Amapá (-1.6%) and Paraíba (-1.7%).

In the same comparison, in extended retail trade, the change was 0.2% with rises in 18 FUs, with a highlight to: Sergipe (8.7%), Espírito Santo (6.6%) and Roraima (6.4% ). Tocantins (-4.8%), Mato Grosso (-4.2%) and Pará (-3.0%).

Compared to January 2022, the 2.6% increase in retail trade sales also had a predominance of positive rates for 23 FUs, with a highlight to: Paraíba (15.9%), Maranhão (12.9%) and Tocantins (11.0%). Among the negative results in the interannual comparison, the highlights are Rio de Janeiro (-2.2%), Paraná (-1.4%) and Pará (-1.3%).

As for extended retail, the comparison between January 2022 and January 2023 had positive results in 10 Federation Units, with a highlight to: Espírito Santo (14.1%), Paraíba (13.9%) and Acre (12. 9%). On the other hand, pressing negatively, eight FUs appear, with emphasis on Pernambuco (-15.4%), Bahia (-7.7%) and Pará (-6.7%).
