In 2022, slaughter of cattle rises again and production of hen eggs hits a record high

In 2022, a total of 29.80 million head of cattle were slaughtered, with an increase of 7.5% from the previous year, after two-years of decrease.
As for slaughter of chickens, in the cumulative index of 2022, a total of 6.11 billion were slauhtered, with stability (-1.26 million head) from 2021.
The number of hogs and pigs slaughteredin 2022 amounted to 56.15 million, a new record for this survey, with an increase of 5.9% (+3.10 million head) against 2021.
The cumulative acquisition of raw milk in 2022 amounted to 23.85 billion liters, a decrease of 5.0% against 2021. That was the second consecutive decrease after the record of 2020.
The production of hen eggs in 2022 amounted to 4.06 billion dozen, a record in the time series, with an increase of 1.2% from 2021, when production had hit a record as well.
In Q4 2022, slaughter of cattle increased by 7.7%; slaughter of hogs and pigs, by 3.4% and that of chickens, by 2.2% against the same period in 2021. Slaughter of cattle fell by 5.4% from Q3 2022; slaughter of hogs and pigs dropped 4.0%, and that of chickens rose 2.2%.
Acquisition of raw milk reached 6.29 billion liters, with a drop of 3.2% from Q4 2021 and an increase of 2.5% against the immediately previous quarter.
The acquisition of rawhide by tanneries increased 5.4% against the fourth quarter of 2021 and was 4.6% lower than the previous quarter, adding up to 7.62 million rawhide pieces.
In Q4 2022, the output of hen eggs reached 1.04 billion dozens, an increase of 3.4% from the same period in 2021 and of 1.0% againstt the previous month.

Slaughter of cattle rises again in 2022
In 2022, a total of 29.80 million cattle head under some type of sanitary inspection (federal, state or municipal) were slaughtered, with an increase of 7.5% from the previous year.
This result interrupted a series of two consecutive years of decrease in this activity. All the months recorded positive chaanges in relation to the respective periods in 2021, with a highlight to September, when there was a comparative increase of 33.6%.
In 2022, the slaughter of females was resumed after three year of decrease, with a rise of 19.1% against the previous year. In this comparison, there was a decrease of 8.5% at average prices (CEPEA/Esalq). The increase of this activity was followed by exports of beef (1.99 million tonnes), in the time series of the Foreign Trade Secretariat (Secex).
The slaughter of 2.09 million cattle head more, from 2021, was caused by increased in 23 of the 27 Federation Units. São Paulo (+529.27 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+320.74 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+229.26 thousand head), Rondônia (+182.11 thousand head), Pará (+171.93 thousand head) and Tocantins (+153.95 thousand head) recorded the biggest increases. The most significant drops were registered in Goiás (-22.62 thousand head) and Santa Catarina (-5.9 thousand head).
Mato Grosso remained leading the national cattle slaughter ranking in 2022, with 15.8% of the share, followed by São Paulo (11.5%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (11.0%).
In the Q4 2022, 7.49 million cattle head under some sort of sanitary inspection were slaughtered. That represents an increase of 7.7% from Q4 2021 and a drop of 5.4% against Q3 2022.
The slaughter of 533.10 thousand more cattle head in the fourth quarter of 2022, against the same period a year ago, was leveraged by the increase in 121 of the 27 FUs.
Slaughter of hogs and pigs grows 5.9% and hits a record high
The number of hogs and pigs slaughtered in 2022 amounted to 56.15 million, a new record for this survey, with an increase of 5.9% (+3.10 million head) against 2021.
All the months in 2022 recorded positive changes from the previous year and, in May, there was the biggest increase (+417.01 thousand head). In terms of the cumulative index in 2022, pork exports remained at a high level, -0.1% below the record figure of 2021. The scenario remained challenging for swine industry, with high production costs and abundant supply, which affected the restart of activities for producers.
The slaughter of more 3.10 thousand head of hogs and pigs more in 2022, against the previous year, was fostered by rises in slaughter in 19 of the 25 Federation Units taking part in the survey. There were increases in: Santa Catarina (+972.43 thousand head), Paraná (+735.94 thousand head), Rio Grande do Sul (+404.69 thousand head), São Paulo (+355.54 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+281.59 thousand head), Mato Grosso do Sul (+236.06 thousand head) and Goiás (+49.13 thousand head). On the other hand, there was a decrease in Mato Grosso (-51.68 thousand head).
Santa Catarina remained leading slaughter of hogs and pigs in 2022, with 28.5% of the national participation, followed by Paraná (20.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (17.3%).
The slaughter of hogs and pigs amounted to 13.89 million head in Q4 2022, with an increase of 3.4% against the same quarter in 2021 and a decrease of 4.0% against the previous quarter. That was the best Q4 in the time series since 1997, with increases in 16 of the 24 Federation Units taking part in the survey.
The slaughter of chickens in the second highest in the time series

As for slaughter of chickens, in the cumulative index of 2022, a total of 6.11 billion were slauhtered, with stability (-1.26 million head) from 2021. This result was the second best in the time series initiated in 1997, having been only second to the 2021 figure. In the monthly comparison, January, February, March, April and July recorded decreases in slaughter against the preceding year. Among the months with increases in slaughter, August (+13.00 million head) and December (+14.43 million head) stood out.
In 2022 a new record in exports of chicken meat was reached. Against 2021, only July, September, October and December recorded decreases in exports. The domestic market, with a better adjusted supply throughout the year favored poultry prices.
The reduction by 1.26 million head of chicken slaughtered in 2022, against the previous year, was determined by drops in slaughter in 10 of the 25 Federation Units analyzed in the survey. Drops were observed in Santa Catarina (-31.81 million head), Minas Gerais (-11.92 million head) and Rio Grande do Sul (-10.44 million head).
On the other hand, increases were reported in: Paraná (+41.42 million head), Mato Grosso (+9.52 million head), Goiás (+4.21 million head), Bahia (+3.45 million head), São Paulo (+2.26 million head) and Mato Grosso do Sul (+119.78 million head).
Paraná keeps leading state ranking for chicken slaughter in Brazil in 2022, with 33.5% of the national share, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (13.4%) and Santa Catarina (13.1%).
In Q42022, 1.56 billion chicken head were slaughtered. This figure represented an increase of 2.2% from the previous quarter and an increase of 2.2% against Q3 2022.
A new quarterly record was set for the time series of the survey, initiated in 1997, and the best records were those of November and December. The slaughter of 34.35 million more chickens in the Q4 2022, in relation to the same period a year before, was determined by increases in slaughter in 16 of the 25 Federation Units surveyed.
Acquisition of milk falls for the second consecutive year
In 2022, dairy facilities that are under some type of sanitary inspection acquired 23.85 billion liters, with a decrease of 5.0% from 2021.
No month recorded a positive change in 2021 and the most relevant one was recorded in January (-253.72 million liters). The year 2022 was characterized by the high production cost and by droughts in southern parts of Brazil, due to La Niña. The limited supply of milk led to record prices in Q3 and to the increase of exports to supply industry. These factors, together with the approaching demand of consumers for dairy products, added to the reduction of milk acquisition in the annual comparison.
There was a decrease by 1.27 billion liters of milk at national level against 2021, related to the reduction of volume acquired in 19 of the 26 Federation Units taking part in the Quaterly Survey of Milk Production. The most significant negative drops occurred in Minas Gerais (-353.18 million liters), Goiás (-274.17 million liters), Rio Grande do Sul (-209.45 million liters), São Paulo (-163.42 million liters) and Paraná (-84.98 million liters).
Seven states recorded decreases and the most significant ones were those in Sergipe (+78.28 million liters), Santa Catarina (+31.52 million liters) and Ceará (+28.38 million liters).
Minas Gerais remained as the leader with 24.5% of the national share, followed by Paraná (14.3%) and Rio Grande do Sul (13.3%).
AIn the 4th quarter of 2022, the acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some kind of sanitary inspection reached 6.29 billion liters. This figure corresponded to the reduction of 3.2% in comparison with the volume registered in Q4 2021 and to an increase of 2.5% against the amount obtained in the immediately previous quarter.
Acquisition of leather increases by 2.4% in 2022
In 2022, the tanneries investigated by the Quarterly Survey of Leather reported to have received 30.22 million cattle rawhide pieces, with an increase of 2.4% against the previous year. As in the slaughter survey, September recorded the most significant change (+22.7%).
The increase by 823.91 whole rawhide pieces, against 2021, was influenced by the bigger reception of cattle rawhide in 13 of the 18 Federation Units taking part in the survey. The biggest increases were registered in Mato Grosso do Sul (+347.86 thousand pieces), Rondônia (+247.75 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso (+117.90 thousand pieces), Rio Grande do Sul (+58.12 thousand pieces) and Paraná (+22.19 thousand pieces). Goiás recorded the most significant drop (-57.41 thousand pieces).
In the national ranking, Mato Grosso kept leading the reception of cattle rawhide by tanneries in 2022, with 16.6% of participation, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (13.8%) and São Paulo (11.1%).
The tanneries investigated in the Quarterly Survey of Leather – those responsible for at least 5,000 whole pieces of cattle rawhide per year – reported to have received 7.62 million whole cattle rawhide pieces in the fourth quarter of 2022. This amount represented an increase of 5.4% against the fourth quarter of 2021 and a drop of 4.6% from the immediately previous quarter.
Production of hen eggs increases 1.2% in 2022 and hits a record high
The cumulative production of hen eggs in 2022 reached 4.06 billion dozens, an increase of 1.2% against the previous year. That was the highest figure observed in the time series, which led to another year with a record production.
The overall increase of inflation in the sector of animal protein added to the internal consumption of eggs, a more affordable protein, in absloute terms, compared to meat. Other factors having an effect on the productive chain and observed since 2020, sich as the high production costs and low margins for producers remained throughout 2022.
The production of 47.71 million more dozen eggs, at national level, iagainst 2021, was a consequence of the increased production in 16 of the 26 Federation Units with eligible chicken farms. Ceará (+15.13 million dozon), Paraná (+11.74 million dozen), Minas Gerais (+9.63 million dozen), Maranhão (+8.25 million dozen) and Tocantins (+7.32 million dozen) recorded the biggest increases. Espírito Santo accounted for the main drop: -11.90 million dozen.
São Paulo, which recorded a drop of 0.1% against the previous year, and remained responsible for the biggest production, as the state ranking leader of production of hen eggs, with 27.1%, followed by Paraná (9.4%), Minas Gerais (8.09%) and Espírito Santo (8.4%).
The production of hen eggs reached 1,04 billion dozen in Q4 2022. That was the first time, in two years, that there was inicrease between the 3rd and the 4th quarters. The fourth quarter of 2022 registered the biggest production estimated by the survey, with a reord for the three months, and in October it represented the highest monthly level ever.
From Q4 200 on, revised data on chickens started to be presented in the time series of the survey (since 1997), with the identification of registers of the weight of live chickebs instead of the weight of carcass.
