Retail sales change by 0.4% in October

Volume of sales of retail trade in October changed by 0.4% from 2022 September, in the seasonally-adjusted series. As a result, the quarterly moving average increased 0.6% in the quarter ended October. In the series without adjustment, against October 2021, trade increased 2.7%, third consecutive positive result. The cumulative index in the year reached 1.0% and, in the last 12 months, it was 0.1%, first positive result after 5 consecutive months of decrease.

In extended retail trade, which includes the activities of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, volume of sales increased by 0.5% from June. The quarterly moving average was 0.7% in the quarter ended October. Volume of sales against October 2021 increased by 0.3%. The cumulative figure in the year was -0.5% and, in the last 12 months, -1.0%.
In October 2022, in the seasonally adjusted series, five of the eight activities surveyed were positive. Furniture and household appliances (2.5%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (2.0%), Other personal and domestic objects (2.0%), Fuels and lubricants (0.4%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.2%).
On the other hand, the three groups recording decrease were: Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and perfumery (-0.4%), textiles, apparel and footwear (-3.4%) and Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-3.8%).
Extended retail trade activities recorded negative results: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces, with -1.7% and Construction material, with -3.5%.

Trade records increase of 2.7% from October 2021, with an increase in five of eight activities surveyed
Against October 2021, five activities recorded increases: Fuels and lubricants (34.2%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (13.6%), Ofice, computer and communication material and equipment (8.1%), Pharmaceuticals, medica, orthopedic articles and toiletries (5.2%) and Hyper and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (2.6%).
Three sectors recorded decreases: Furniture and household appliances (–0.5%) and Other personal and domestic articles (-8.5%) and Textiles, apparel and footwear (-14.8%).
As for extended retail, both activities recorded decreases: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces (-0.7%) and Construction material (-12.7%).

Fuels and lubricants increased by 34.2% from October 2021, ninth consectutive increase in the interannual comparison. The sector also recorded the biggest contribution to the overal retail trade rate (3.1 p.p. out of 2.7%). The increase of this activity in the period is linked to the policiy of reduction of gasoline prices, which started in July 2022. As for the cumulative index in the year, the activity recorded deceleration, with a change from 12.7% to 14.9%. As for the cumulative index in the last 12 months, there was a change from 7.6% up to September, to 11.2%, up to October, the sector recorded acceleration of increase.
On the other hand, the sector of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery grew by 13.6% from October 2021. The cumulative index in the year, with a change from 19.0% to 18.5%, the activity shows stability in the pace of increase. In terms of cumulative result in the last 12 months, there was acceleration from 10.8% up to September to 12.3% up to October 2022.
The group Office, computer and communication equipment and material advanced 8.1% in October 2022 na comparação com o mesmo mês do ano anterior, terceiro consecutivo e o mais intenso, em termos de amplitude, desde março de 2022, quando havia sido de 16,5%. In the year, up to October, the sector had a cumulative increase od 2.1%, above the figure recorded up to September (1.4%). The cumulative indicator in the last 12 months recorded an increase of 0.5% up to October, first positive result since March 2022 (0.2%).
The sector of Pharmeceuticals, medical and orhopedic articles and toiletries increased by 5.2% in sales against October 2021, 12th consecutive positive rate. The cumulative index in the year up to October. having changed from 7.2% to 7.0% kept the pace of increase. In 12 months, the result of 6.7% up to October 2022 surpassed by 0.4 p.p. of the cumulative index up to September.
The activity of Hypermarkets and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, having advanced 2.6% in October 2022, had its third consecutive month of increase in terms of the interannual indicators. The positive performance of the sector, together with the weight of the activitiy in retail, places it as the second in terms of contribution to the overall rate, with a total of 1.3 p. p out of 2.7%. In the year, the cumulative figure is 1.1% up to October, fourth consecutive month of increase. In the last 12 months, the cumulative result was also positive until October (0.8%), being the second consecutive month without negative results after 14 months of decrease.
The group Furniture and household appliances recorded a decrease (-0.5%) for the seventh consecutive month in the interannual comparison. The cumulative index in the eyar up to October 2022 recorded a decrease of 8.7% and has not had increases since July 2021 (2.6%). As for the last 12 months, the result was of -11.2%, with consecutive decreases since September 2021.
Other personal and domestic articles, which encompasses department stores, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores, toy stores, among others, fell by 8.5% from October 2021, sixth consecutive result. In the year, the decrease up to October is 8.2%, also the sixth consecutive increase, similar to the cumulative result in the last 12 months (-7.3%), fifth one to record drops in a row.
Textiles, wearing apparel and footwear, with a decrease of 14.8% against October 2021 had its fourth consecutive drop. The activity represented the second highest negative contribution to the overall rate, and a cumulative result of -1.1 p. p. out of 2.7%. In the year, the cumulative result is positive, but fell by 4.0% up to October versus 6.4% up to September. In the last 12 months, the result up to October is positive (2.4%), but below the September result (3.5%).
Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces fell by 0.7 against October 2021. The cumulative index in the year was -1.4% in October recording a decrease since July 2021. The cumulative index in 12 months was -0.9% and the series has been negative for three months.
Construction material fell by 12.7% from October 2021, seventh consecutive loss since April 2021, accounting, in the interannual comparison, the main negative contribution to the overall rate, accounting for -1.4 p.p in a total of 0.3% of extended retail trade. In the year, losses amounted to 8.6% up to October, with a total ten months of cumulative negative results. As for results in the last months, the result has been negative for ten months, being -8.2% up to October.
Sales record increase in 15 Federation Units from September
In the seasonally-adjusted series, 15 of the 27 Federation Units had positive results, mainly: Amapá (5.1%), Roraima (2.1%) and Acre (2.0%). Accounting for negative results, there were 10 Federation Units, mainly Paraíba (-6.8%), Rio Grande do Norte (-1.3%) and Tocantins (-0.9%). Pernambuco and the Federal District were stable (0.0%) from September to October 2022.
In the same comparison, in extended retail trade, 17 of the 27 Federation Units recorded increases, led by Amapá (5.7%), Goiás (5.3%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (3.7%). Decreases were recorded by Tocantins (-7.9%), Rondônia (-4.8%) and Paraíba (-2.0%).
From October 2021, 22 Federation Units recorded positive results. The main ones were in: Roraima (31.3%), Amapá (23.4%) and Roraima (16.4%). Five Federation Units accounted for negative contributions. The highlighst were: Tocantins (-3.8%), Bahia (-1.6%) and Rondônia (-1.2%).
As for extended retail trade, 16 Federation Units recorded increased, with a highlight to: Paraíba (18.6%), Amapá (16.6%) and Roraima (11.0%). With negative results, the highlights were Pernambuco (-13.5%), Bahia (-10.4%) and Sergipe (-6.6%).
