Services up 0.9% in September

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector in Brazil increased 0.9% in September from August 2022. The services sector is 11.8% above the level in February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and reached the new peak in the series, surpassing the result of November 2014.

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, volume of services registered the 11th consecutive positive rate over January 2021, advancing 9.5%. Volume of services had a cumulative increase of 8.6% in the year against the same period in 2021. With a change from 9.0% in August to 8.9% in September, the cumulative index in the last 12 months kept the downward trend observed since April 202 (12.8%).
Volume of services increased 0.9% from August to September, fifth positive result in a row, with cumulative increase of 4.9%. As a result, the sector of services hit a new record, surpassing November 2014, which is now 0.7% below the rate in September 2022. Volume of services is 11.8% above the result of February 2020, observed prior to the pandemic.
The hike of 0.9% in volume of services from August to September 2022 was also observed in other three of the five activities surveyed. The highlight was information and communication (2.0%), which recorded the third consecutive positive result, and a cumulative increase of 4.1%. Services rendered to families (1.0%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.2%) also recorded increases. The former had its seventh increase in a row, with a cumulative 11.7%; the latter had a more moderate behavior, with an aggregate of 0.3% in the last two months.
On the other hand, transportation (-0.1%) and other services (-0.3%) accounted for negative contributions in September. The former interrupted a sequence of four positive rates and the lattermade up for a shre of the 0.7% advance observed in August.
The quarterly moving average reached 1.1% in the quarter ended September, against the same level in the previous month, and has been on an upward trend since July 2020.
In September 2022, the sector of services increased by 9.7% from September 2021, 19th positive rate in a row. All the five activities advanced, as well as 63.3% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (15.3%) accounted for the main positive contribution on the total volume of services. The other advances came from nformation and communication (6.0%); professional, administrative and complementary services (6.9%), services rendered to families (17.8%) and other services (2.6%).
Compared with the same period in 2021, the cumulative index in the year amounted to 8.6%, with positive rates in five dissemination activities and an increase of 65.7% in the 166 types of services surveyed. Among the sectors, that of transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (14.1%) accounted for the major positive contribution to the total volume of services, leveraged by the increase in the revenue of the road transportation of cargo, air transportation of passengers, road transportation of passengers, port and terminal management, maritime and port support, and airport operation. The other advances came from services rendered to families (30.3%); professional, administrative and complementary services (7.6%); and information and communication (3.2%).

In services rendered to families, there was an increase in the revenue of enterprises in the following segments: restaurants; hotels; catering services and physical conditioning activities. In professional, administrative and complementary services, the increase was registered by: in the former segment: car rental; engineering services; solutions in electronic payment; consulting in business management; charge and cadastral information activities; management of intangible assets; and organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses and conventions.
In information and communication services, increaase was observed in portals, content providers and Internet search engines; data treatment, application service providers and Internet hosting; software development and licensing; consulting in information technology; other telecommunications activiti and development of computer programs on demand.
On the other hand, the sector or other services (-4.1%) recorded the only negative rate of the cumulative index in the year, mainly due to the lower income received from companies that work in the segments of recovery of plastic material; security brokers; administration of stock markets and over-the-counter markets; and administration of funds by contract or commission.
Services grow in 19 of the 27 Federation Units
By area, 16 of the 27 Federation Units recorded increases in volume of services in September 2022 in comparison with the immediately previous month, following the increase observed at national level (0.9%). The main impacts came from Rio de Janeiro (0.7%), Santa Catarina (2.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.0%) and São Paulo (0.1%). On the other hand, Paraná (-2.3%) accounted for the main negative contribution (-3.0%), followed by Pernambuco (-1.6%) and Minas Gerais (-0.2%).
Against September 2021, the advance of services in Brazil (9.7%) was registered in 25 of the 27 Federation Units. The major positive contribution came from São Paulo (12.5%), followed by Minas Gerais (13.0%), Rio de Janeiro (4.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (7.9%) and Santa Catarina (9.8%). On the other hand, the Federal District (-2.7%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (-0.1%) reported the only negative results this month.
In terms of the cumulative index from January to September 2022, against the same period in 2021, the increase of volume of services in Brazil (8.6%) was widespread, since 26 of the Federation Units recorded increase in revenue of services. São Paulo accounted for the main positive impact (10.5%), in regional terms, followed by Minas Gerais (11.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (12.2%), Rio de janeiro (2.8%), pernambuco (12.7%), Paraná (4.6%) and Bahia (8.2%). The Federal District (-1.7%) registered the only negative contribution to the overall index.
Index of tourism activities increases by 0.4% in September
The tourism activity index increased 0.4% in September third positive result in a row, a period when there was cumulative increase of 3.2%. As a result, the segment is 0.7% above the level of February 2020 and 6.7% below the highest figure in the series, of February 2014.
Only five of the 12 areas surveyed recorded increases as observed in the national tourism activity (0.4%). The positive highlight was Rio de Janeiro (2.6%), followed by São Paulo (0,7%), Federal District (3.4%) and Pernambuco (1.6%). On the other hand, Minas Gerais (-1.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-3.2%) recorded the main decreases.
In the comparison with September 2021, the index of tourism activity in Brazil rose 22.5%, 18th positive rate in a row, mainly due to the increased revenue of enterprises in the segment of air transport; car rental; restaurants; hotels; catering services androad transportation of passengers.
In regional terms, all the 12 Federation Units in which the indicator is measured registered an advance in tourism services, with a highlight to São Paulo (34.3%), Minas Gerais (33.6%), Rio de Janeiro (10.9%), Paraná (20.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (20.0%).
Considering the cumulative index from January to September 2022, the special aggregate of tourism activities recorded an increase of 36.9% against the same period a year ago, mainly due to revenue increases in companies in the air transportation segment; restaurants; hotels; car rental; collective road transportation of passengers and catering services.
In regional terms, all the 12 places surveyed registered positive rates, mainly São Paulo (44.3%), Minas Gerais (58.7%), Rio de Janeiro (19.2%), Rio Grande do Sul (47.6%) and Bahia (31.1%).
Passenger transportation records increase of 1.6%, and that of cargo, of 0.5%.
In September 2022, volume of passenger transportation in Brazil increased 1.6% from the immediately previous month in the seasonally-adjusted series, after a decrease of 0.5% in August. The segment is 1.6% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020) and 21.0% below the peak of the time series (February 2014).
Volume of cargo transportation recorded a negative change of 0.5% in September 2022, after an increase of 22.5% bewteen September 2021 and August 2022. The segment is 0.5% below the peak of the time series, observed in the previous month. In comparison with the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation is 33.7% above that of February 2020.
Against September 2021, transportation of passengers recorded the 18th positive rate in a row, having advanced 22.8%, whereas cargo transportation, in the same comparison, increased 20.6%, 25th positive increase in a row.
In terms of the cumulative index in the year, transportation of passengers increased 35.6% against the same period in 2021, whereas cargo transportation did by 15.3%.
