In September, retail sales grow 1.1%

In September 2022, the volume of sales in the retail trade grew 1.1% compared to August, in the seasonally adjusted series. The quarterly moving average was 0.3%. In the non-adjusted series, compared to September 2021, trade grew by 3.2%, the second positive rate in a row. In the year, the cumulative index was 0.8% and, in the last twelve months, -0.7%.

In the extended retail trade, which includes the activities of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, the volume of sales increased by 1.5% compared to August. The quarterly moving average was 0.4%. The volume of sales compared to September 2021 grew 1.0%. The cumulative index in the year was -0.6% and in the last 12 months, -1.6%.

Six of the eight activities had positive rates in the seasonally-adjusted series

In September 2022, in the seasonally-adjusted series, six of the eight activities surveyed were in the positive field: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (2.5%), Office, IT and communication equipment and supplies (1.7%), Fuels and lubricants (1.3%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.2%), Textiles, clothing and footwear (0.7%) and Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries (0.6%). On the other hand, two activities showed negative results: Furniture and Appliances (-0.1%) and Other articles for personal and domestic use (-1.0%).

The two complementary activities of the extended retail were stable compared to August: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces with -0.1% and Construction material, with 0.0%.

Trade grows 3.2% over September 2021, with high in five of eight activities

In relation to September 2021, five activities increased: Fuels and lubricants (34.8%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (31.8%), Office, IT and communication equipment and supplies (6.8%) , Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries (5.9%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (3.8%).

Three sectors had decrease: Other articles of personal and domestic use (-10.0%), Textiles, wearing apparel and footwear (-9.5%), Furniture and household appliances (-5.9%).

In the extended retail scope, both activities fell: Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces (-1.2%) and Construction material (-7.9%).

The activity of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery grew 31.8% compared to September 2021. As a result, the sector accounts for five consecutive months of growth in interannual terms. In the year, up to September, the sector accumulates 19.0% growth, against 17.8% up to August, indicating an intensification of pace. In the last twelve months, the scenario is the same, with an accumulation of 10.8% up to September, against 8.5% up to August.

The sector of Office, IT and communication equipment and supplies registered, in September, an increase of 6.8% in relation to the same month of the previous year, it is the second consecutive in the positive field. The cumulative indicator for the year adds up to 1.4%, up from 0.8% up to August. In the last twelve months, the result was -1.2%.

The group of Fuels and lubricants, in the interannual comparison, had, in September 2022, a result 34.8% higher than that of September 2021, the largest in the entire time series of the sector, in addition to being the eighth consecutive in the positive field. The sector also achieved the largest contribution to the absolute composition of the interannual rate, contributing with 3.2 pp to the total of 3.2% of change in the retail trade and 2.2 pp in the total of 1.0% of the change of the extended retail.

The activity of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco grew 3.8% in the interannual comparison, the second consecutive month on the rise. In terms of contribution, the sector exerted the second greatest influence in the positive field: 1.8 pp of the total of 3.2%. In the year, the accumulation is positive at 0.9%, above the previous result (0.5% up to August). In the last twelve months, the result is close to stability (0.1% until September), being the first out of the negative field since June 2021 (0.8%).

In the case of Textiles, apparel and footwear, the interannual rate was -9.5%, the third consecutive negative result. In the year, the accumulation is positive at 6.4%, below that observed up to August (8.6%) indicating a loss of pace. The same is true for the last twelve months: 4.2% in August and 3.5% in September.

The activity of Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries registered growth for the 11th consecutive month, in the interannual comparison. The cumulative index for the year was 7.2%. In the last twelve months, the cumulatvie index was 6.3%, 1% in July and 6.1% in August).

For the sector of Furniture and household appliances, results are negative both for the interannual comparison and for those accumulated in the year and in the last twelve months. In the interannual period, the activity registered -5.9%, the sixth consecutive rate in the negative field. In the year, the cumulative index is negative in 9.5% and in the last twelve months, -13.0%.

Other personal and household articles, fell by 10.0% compared to September 2021, the fifth consecutive decline and the largest negative contribution to retail (-1.4 pp). In the year, the cumulative index is -8.1%, also fifth in the negative field. In the last twelve months, the value was -7.2%, the fourth to show decline.

In the scope of extended retail, the Construction material sector had a fall of 7.9%, the sixth consecutive month registering negative results in the interannual comparison.
The cumulative result for the year closed at -8.1% and has been in the negative field since December 2021. In the last twelve months, the result was also -8.4%, the seventh consecutive negative index.

The activity Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces ended September 2022 at -1.2% compared to September 2021. In the time series, this is the fourth month to show a decline. In terms of the cumulative index in the year, the result was -1.4%, in the same rhythm of the two previous months. In the last twelve months, up to September, it is also negative: -1.2%.

Sales are up in 18 UFs compared to August

In the seasonally adjusted series, 18 of the 27 Federation Units had positive results, especially: Paraíba (4.5%), Rio de Janeiro (3.1%) and Pernambuco (2.3%). On the other hand, nine activities exerted negative pressure, especially Mato Grosso do Sul
(-1.7%), Espírito Santo (-1.5%) and Roraima (-1.2%). Tocantins presented stability (0.0%) from August to September.

For the same comparison, in extended retail, 14 of the 27 Federation Units had a decrease, especially: Goiás (-3.6%), Mato Grosso do Sul (-3.1%) and Santa Catarina
(-2.0%). On the other hand, 13 FUs had positive results, with highlights for: Rio de Janeiro (5.5%), Paraíba (2.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (2.5%).

Compared to September 2021, there were positive results in 24 of the 27 Federation Units, especially: Paraíba (41.6%), Amapá (13.7%) and Roraima (13.2%). On the other hand, with negative pressure, there are three FUs, with highlights for: Rio de Janeiro (-3.1%), Bahia (-2.5%) and Pernambuco (-2.1%).

In the extended retail trade, 16 FUs had an increase, especially: Paraíba (25.0%), Mato Grosso (12.6%) and Tocantins (11.3%). On the other hand, with negative pressure, there are 11 FUs, with highlights for Pernambuco (-13.6%), Bahia (-10.4%) and Ceará (-6.3%).
