Industrial production falls 0.7% in September

In September 2022, the national industrial production fell by 0.7% compared to August, in the seasonally adjusted series, - the second consecutive negative rate. Compared to September 2021, in the series without adjustment, industry grew 0.4%. In the year, industry accrues a drop of 1.1% and, in 12 months, of 2.3%.

With the 0.7% fall of the industry from August to September, the four major economic categories and 21 of the 26 surveyed subsectors showed a reduction in production. With these results, the industrial sector is still 2.4% below the pre-pandemic level (February 2020) and 18.7% below the record level reached in May 2011.
Among the activities, the most important negative influences came from food products (-2.9%), basic metals (-7.6%) and coke, petroleum products and biofuels (-2.6%). It is also worth mentioning the declines in beverages (-4.6%) and wood products (-8.8%).
On the other hand, among the five activities on the rise, mining and quarrying (1.8%) and machinery and equipment (2.2%) exerted the main impacts in September 2022, with the former eliminating part of the 3.1% decline registered in August and the second marking the second consecutive month of expansion in production, accumulating a 15.3% gain in this period.

Among the major economic categories, also in the comparison with August, semi- and non-durable consumer goods (-1.4%) and intermediate goods (-1.1%) had negative rates, with both showing the second consecutive month of decline and accumulating losses in this period of 3.3% and 2.7%, respectively. The sectors of capital goods (-0.5%) and durable consumer goods (-0.2%) also showed a reduction in September.
Quarterly moving average changes -0.3% in quarter ended in September
Still in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average for the industry was -0.3% in the quarter ended in September 2022 compared to the level of the previous month, after also decreasing in August (-0.2%).
Among the major economic categories, semi and non-durable consumer goods (-0.5%), durable consumer goods (-0.5%) and intermediate goods (-0.3%) had negative results in this month, with the first sharpening the fall of the previous month (-0.4%); the second interrupting the upward trend started in March 2022; and the third falling for the second consecutive month and accumulating a loss of 0.4% in the period. On the other hand, the capital goods sector grew 0.6% in September 2022, the only positive rate in that month and its third consecutive increase, accumulating expansion of 1.4% in the period.
Compared to September 2021, industry advances 0.4%
In comparison with September 2021, the industrial sector increased by 0.4% in September 2022, with positive results in two of the four major economic categories, 12 of the 26 branches, 28 of the 79 groups and 45.3% of the 805 products surveyed. It is worth mentioning that September 2022 (21 days) had the same number of days as the same month of the previous year (21).
Among the activities, the main positive influences came from motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (20.3%) and other chemical products (7.7%). It is also worth mentioning the positive contributions of the segments of pulp, paper and paper products (6.6%), of other transportation equipment (25.9%), of machinery and equipment (4.0%), of computer equipment, electronic and optical products (10.0%), leather, travel goods and footwear (8.5%) and tobacco products (35.5%).
On the other hand, still in relation to September 2021, among the 14 falling activities, mining and quarrying (-5.7%), basic metals (-10.3%) and wood products (-24.2%) accounted for the sharpest influences, pressured by the lower production of raw or processed iron ore. Other important negative impacts came from fabricated metal products (-7.9%), electrical machinery, equipment and materials (-9.2%), textile products (-11.7%), non-metallic mineral products (-3, 9%), furniture (-13.3%), printing and reproduction of recorded media (-20.4%) and manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories (-5.9%).
Among the major economic categories, still compared to the same month of the previous year, durable consumer goods (10.5%) and capital goods (4.6%) had positive results in September 2022. On the other hand, the segments of intermediate goods (-0.3%) and semi and non-durable consumer goods (-1.4%) had decreases in this month.
The durable consumer goods sector increased 10.5%, the fourth consecutive positive result in this comparison. The sector was boosted by the increase in car manufacturing (23.9%). It is also worth mentioning the advances in “brown goods" (35.5%) and motorcycles (29.4%). On the other hand, the negative impacts came from the lower production of "white goods" (-22.8%), other household appliances (-15.3%) and furniture (-16.0%).
The production of capital goods grew 4.6% in the monthly index for September 2022, the second consecutive positive result in this type of comparison. The segment was influenced by the expansion in the group of capital goods for transportation equipment (24.5%). The other positive results were in the groups capital goodsfor agricultural purposes (19.5%), for construction (14.6%) and for electric energy (6.7%). The negative impacts came from capital goods for industrial purposes (-3.8%) and mixed use (-4.8%).
The segment of intermediate goods fell 0.3% compared to September 2021, interrupting two consecutive months of highs, in this comparison. This month's result was explained by the declines in mining and quarrying industries (-5.7%), basic metals (-10.3%), fabricated metal products (-8.4%), food products (-3.0%), of non-metallic minerals (-3.9%), textile products (-9.4%) and rubber and plastic products (-2.2%). The positive pressures came from motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (30.6%), coke, petroleum products and biofuels (6.3%), other chemical products (7.8%), pulp, paper and paper products (7.5%) and machinery and equipment (5.1%).
Still in this economic category, it is also worth mentioning the results of typical inputs for civil construction (-5.3%), the 13th consecutive decrease in this comparison, and packaging (0.0%), with zero change for the second consecutive month.
The semi and non-durable consumer goods sector retreated 1.4% in September 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, interrupting five months of consecutive positive rates in this type of comparison. The decrease in this month was explained, mainly, by the decrease observed in the group of fuels (-10.9%), pressured by the lower production of ethyl alcohol and motor gasoline. It is also worth mentioning the negative result of the group of semi-durable goods (-1.8%). On the other hand, Food and beverage products made for domestic consumption (1.0%) and non-durables (0.6%) had positive results.
All major economic categories accumulate declines in the year
In the cumulative index in the year, compared to the same period of the previous year, the industrial sector registered a fall of 1.1%, with negative results in four of the four major economic categories, 15 of the 26 branches, 56 of the 79 groups and 61.0% of the 805 products surveyed.
Among the activities, the main negative influences in the total of the industry were registered by mining and quarrying (-4.0%), fabricated metal products (-10.8%), basic metals (-5.8%), electronic machinery, equipment and materials (-11.7%) and rubber and plastic products (-6.7%). It is also worth mentioning the negative contributions of textile products (-13.2%), furniture (-17.9%), non-metallic mineral products (-4.6%), pharmochemical and pharmaceutical products (- 5.5%) and wood products (-8.3%).
On the other hand, among the ten activities with expansion, coke, petroleum products and biofuels (8.3%) exerted the greatest influence. Other important positive impacts came from other chemical products (3.0%), beverages (4.4%), pulp, paper and paper products (3.5%) and food products (0.7%).
Among the major economic categories, the profile of the results for the nine months of 2022 showed less dynamism for durable consumer goods (-5.3%), pressured by the reductions in the manufacture of houdsehold appliances (-16.4%), especially white goods (-20.3%). The segments of intermediate goods (-1.0%), semi and non-durable consumer goods (-0.7%) and capital goods (-0.5%) also had negative results in the year, but all with declines less sharp than the industry average (-1.1%).
