Slaughter of hogs and pigs in Q2 2022 is the biggest since 1997

A total of 14.07 million hogs and pigs head were slaughtered in the second quarter of 2022, a record figure in the time series that started in 1997.

In the second quarter of 2022, 7.38 million cattle head were slaughtered, with an increase 3.5% against the same quarter of 2021.

1.50 billion chicken head were slaughtered, accounting for a drop of 1.4% against the same period in 2021 and of 2.7% in relation to the first quarter of 2022.

Acquisition of raw milk in the second quarter of 2022 reached 5.40 billion liters, with a decrease of 7.6% in relation to the second quarter of 2021 and of 8.9% against the immediately previous quarter. It was the smallest acquisition for a second quarter since 2016.

The production of hen eggs reached 998.82 million dozen in the second quarter of 2022, the highest figure for a second quarter since 1997. It remained stable against the second quarter of 2021 and increased 1.8% over the first quarter of 2022.

Cattle slaughter rises 3.5% in relation to Q2 2021

In the second quarter of 2022, a total of 7.38 million cattle head under some type of sanitary inspection were slaughtered, which meant a rise of 3.5% against the second quarter of 2021 and of 5.7% over the immediately previous quarter. April was the month recording the lowest activity in the quarter (2.26 million head) whereas May registered the best performance (2.59 million).

A total of 2.93 million females were slaughtered, a rise of 12.8% over the second quarter of 2021, remaining stable against the same quarter of 2020.

Cattle slaughter grew in 19 out of 27 Federation Units (FUs). Among those with a contribution above 1.0%, the most significant increases occurred in: São Paulo (+163.90 thousand head), Minas Gerais (+59.34 thousand), Mato Grosso do Sul (+35.62 thousand), Tocantins (+28.74 thousand), Bahia (+28.30 thousand), Paraná (+25.49 thousand) and Maranhão (+12.20 thousand). On the other hand, the major negative changes were those of:  Goiás (-73.77 thousand), Mato Grosso (-41.04 thousand), Rondônia (-22.66 thousand), Rio Grande do Sul (-4.29 thousand) and Acre (-3.57 thousand).

Mato Grosso remained leading cattle slaughter, with 15.0% of the national share, followed by São Paulo (12.0%), Mato Grosso do Sul (11.3%) and Minas Gerais (10.3%).

Slaughter of hogs and pigs was a record in the time series started in 1997

In the second quarter of 2022, 14.07 million hogs and pigs were slaughtered, with an increase 7.2% against the same period in 2021 and of 3.0% against the first quarter of 2022.

The slaughter of hogs and pigs grew in 19 out of 25 Federation Units taking part in the survey. Among the states with a share over 1.0%, increases occurred in: Santa Catarina (+270.04 thousand head), Paraná (+258.35 thousand), Rio Grande do Sul (+108.05 thousand), São Paulo (+103.45 thousand), Mato Grosso do Sul (+78.29 thousand), Minas Gerais (+75.68 thousand) and Goiás (+43.49 thousand). The most significant drop occurred in Mato Grosso (-40.26 thousand).

Santa Catarina remained leading the slaughter of hogs and pigs, with 28.4% of the national participation, followed by Paraná (20.9%) and Rio Grande do Sul (17.1%).

Chicken slaughter drops 1.4% against Q2 2021

In the second quarter of 2022, 1.50 billion chicken head were slaughtered, accounting for a drop of 1.4% against the same period in 2021 and of 2.7% in relation to the first quarter of 2022.  In spite of the retractions, the survey unveiled the best month of May in the time series started in 1997.

The slaughter of less 21.02 million chicken head in the second quarter of 2022, in relation to the same period in the previous year, was determined by drops in the slaughter in 17 out of 25 Federation Units analyzed in the survey. Among those with a contribution above 1.0%, there were decreases in: Santa Catarina (-5.69 million head), Mato Grosso (-4.28 million head), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.97 million head), Goiás (-3.26 million head), São Paulo (-2.34 million head), Minas Gerais (-1.36 million head), Mato Grosso do Sul (-891.02 thousand head) and Bahia (-890.29 thousand head). In contrast, an increase occurred in: Paraná (+6.90 million head).

Paraná remained leading the slaughter of chicken in Brazil, with 34.6% of the national participation, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (13.1%) and Santa Catarina (13.0%).

Milk acquisition has worst quarterly result since 2016

In the second quarter of 2022, the acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some kind of sanitary inspection (federal, state or municipal) was of 5.40 billion liters, representing a drop of 7.6% in comparison with the second quarter of 2021 and of 8.9% against the previous quarter.  It was the smallest acquisition for a second quarter since 2016.

Twenty out of 26 FUs taking part in the Quarterly Survey of Milk reduced the acquisition. At the Federation Unit level, the most significant drops occurred in São Paulo (-115.67 million liters), Goiás (-98.62 million liters), Minas Gerais (-95.81 million liters), Rio Grande do Sul (-65.81 million liters), Paraná (-22.07 million liters) and Mato Grosso (-21.66 million liters). On the other hand, the most relevant increases occurred in Sergipe (+18.18 million liters) and Santa Catarina (+17.45 million liters).

Minas Gerais still led the ranking of milk acquisition, with 25.0% of the national acquisition, followed by Paraná (14.7%) and Rio Grande do Sul (12.7%).

Acquisition of leather increases over Q1

The investigated tanning houses reported to have received 7.49 million raw hide pieces in the second quarter of 2022, a reduction of 0.9% over the second quarter of 2021 and a rise of 5.1% over the first quarter of 2022.

Eleven out of 17 Federation Units with tanning houses investigated in the survey dropped. The most significant negative changes in FUs with more than 5,0% of share in leather occurred in Paraná (-83.03 thousand pieces), Goiás (-34.32 thousand), Pará (-31.91 thousand) and Mato Grosso (-25.12 thousand). The most significant increases occurred in Mato Grosso do Sul (+82.20 thousand), Rio Grande do Sul (+68.33 thousand) and São Paulo (+30.53 thousand).

Mato Grosso remained the leader, accounting for 16.0% of the national share, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (14.6%) and São Paulo (11.1%).

Production of hen eggs is the highest ever registered for Q2

In the second quarter of 2022 the production of hen eggs was of 998.82 million dozens, remaining stable against the same quarter  in 2021 and increasing 1.8% over the first quarter of 2022. Despite the small difference in the annual comparison, this result represented the biggest output ever registered in a second quarter.

Twelve out of 26 Federation Units taking part in the survey increased. The most significant increases occurred in Ceará (+3.0 million dozens), Minas Gerais (+2.73 million) and Tocantins (+2.17 million). In contrast, the most significant negative changes occurred in Espírito Santo (-4.11 million), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.61 million), Amazonas (-2.52 million), Pernambuco (-2.44 million) and Goiás (-1.04 million).

The state of São Paulo was still the biggest egg producer, with 27.3% of the national production, followed by Minas Gerais (9.2%) and Espírito Santo (8.5%).
