Volume of services up 0.7% in June

In June 2022, volume of services in Brazil increased by 0.7% from May, in the seasonally-adjusted series, resulting in a cumulative increase of 2.2% in the last four months. As a result, the sector of services is 7.5% above the level of February 2020 (pre-pandemic) and 3.2% below the rate of November 2014 (peak of the time series).

In the seasonally-adjusted series, against June 2021, volume of services recorded its 16th positive rate in a row as it advanced 6.3% in June 2022. In the cumulative indicator in the first semester of 2022, volume of services increased by 8.8% against the same period in 2021. On the ther hand, the cumulative indicator in the last 12 months, with a change from 11.7% in May to 10.5% in June 2022, has been on a downward trend since April 2022 (12.8%).

The increase of 0.7% in volume of services, , from May to June 2022, was also observed in four of the five activities, with a highlight to transportation (0.6%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.7%), which recorded the second positive result in a row. The other advances came from other services (0.8%) and services rendered to families (0.6%). The only negative rate was that of information and communication (-0.2%), which returns, therefore, a small part of the 3.3% cumulative gain of the March-May period this year.

Also in the seasonally adjusted series, the quarterly moving average index recorded a positive change of 0.3% in the quarter ended June 2022 against the result in May, keeping the predominantly positve performance since July 2020. Among the sectors, still in relation to the marginal movement of that index, four of the five activities recorded positive figures this month: services rendered to families (1.9%), information and communication (0.5%), professional, administrative and complementary services (0.5%) and other services (0.3%). On the other hand, transportation (-0.5%) accounted for the only negative result in the month. .

In comparison with June 2021,,volume of services increased 6.3% in June 2022, its 16th positive rate in a row. Four of the five activities recorded increases and 62.7% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, that of transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (9.8%) accounted for the main positive contribution, due to the bigger revenue generated by by road transportation of cargo, road transportation of passengers, maritime and port support navigation railway transportation of cargo.

The other advances came from services rendered to families (28.2%); professional, administrative and complementary services (8.0%); and information and communication services (0.9%), which recorded increases in revenue in: restaurant; and catering services, and physical conditioning activities, in the first sector; car rental; engineering services; solutions in electronic pay; management of intangible assets; organization, promotion and management of fairs, conreesses and conventions; rental of machinery and equipment; and charging and cadastral information activities, in the second one; and portals, content providers and Internet search engines; application services providers and Internet hosting services; other telecommunication activities; consulting in information technology; anddevelopment of customized computer programs, in the last one.

On the other hand, the only negative rate in the month came from other services (-4.7%), mainly due to the revenue from recovery of plastic material; administration of stock markets and over-the-counter markets; security brokers and insurance, social security and health insurance brokers.

In terms of the cumulative index in the first semester of 2022, against the same period a year ago, the sector of services recorded an increase of 8.8%, with positive rates in all four of the five activities surveyed and increase of 66.9%% in 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, the most relevant positive contribution was that of transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (13.9%).

The other advances came from services rendered to families (36.2%); professional, administrative and complementary services (8.3%); and information and communication (3.0%). On the other hand, the sector of other services (-4.2%) recorded the only negative rate in the cumulative indicator in the year.

Services grew in 10 of 27 Federation Units in February

By area, 10 of the 27 Federation Units recorded increases in volume of services in June 2022 in comparison with the immediately previous month, following the increase observed at national level (0.7%). Among the areas recording higher results, the main impacts came from Rio de Janeiro (2.4%), Paraná (2.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (2.1%) and São Paulo (0.2%). On the other hand, Minas Gerais (-3.0%) accounted for the main negative contribution (-3.0%), followed by Amazonas (-5.1%), Ceará (-3.8%) and Pernambuco (-2.4%).

In comparison with May 2021, , the increase in volume of services in Brazil (6.3%) was observed in 24 of the 27 Federation Units. The main positive contribution came from São Paulo (7.9%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul (15.3%), Minas Gerais (7.9%) and Paraná (5.3%). . With opposite results, the Federal District (-6.9%) recorded the main negative figure in the month, followed by Rondônia (-6.2%) and Acre (-11.7%).

As for the cumulative index in the first semester of 2022, against the same period in 2021, advance of volume of services in Brazil (8.8%) took place in 25 of the 27 Federation Units. São Paulo accounted for the main positive impact (10.4%), in regional terms, followed by Minas Gerais (11.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (5.4%), Bahia (10.6%) and Paraná (5.5%).

The Federal District (-0.5%) and Rondônia (-1.9%) registered the only negative contributions to the overall index.

Tourism activities drop 1.8% in August

In June 2022, the index of tourism activities fell by 1.8% from May, after recording advances for three months in a row, a period marked by a cumulative increase of 10.7%. The tourism segment is still 2.8% below the level of February 2020. In regional terms, seven out of 12 places surveyed followed the expansion movement.
The main negative contribution came from São Paulo (-2.2%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (-1.2%), Federal District (-3.3%), Espírito Santo (-6.6%) and Pernambuco (-2.5%). Rio Grande do Sul (4.7%), on the other hand, acccounted for the main increase in regional terms.

In the comparison June 2022 / June 2021, the index of tourism activity in Brazil rose 25.9%, 15th positive rate in a row, mainly due to the increased revenue of enterprises that work in the segment of restaurants; car rental; road transportation of passengers; car rental; catering services and air transport. In regional terms, all the 12 Federation Units in which measure the indicator registered an advance in tourism services, highlighted by São Paulo (30.2%) and followed by Minas Gerais (43.5%), Minas Gerais (43.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (42.1%), Paraná (31.4%) and Bahia (25.7%).

As for the cumulative index in the period January-June 2022, the special aggregate of tourism activities increased 45.2% against the same period a year ago, mainly due to the increases in revenue of companies in air transportation of passengers; restaurants; hotels; car rental; collective road transportation of passengers and catering services. Regionally, eight out of the 12 places surveyed also registered positive rates, wit a highlight to São Paulo (50.4%), followed by Minas Gerais (73.7%), Rio de Janeiro, Rio Grande do Sul (62.7%) and Bahia (43.7%).

Transportation of passengers drops 0.8% and that of cargo increases between May and June

InJune 2022, the volume of passenger transportation in Brazil fell 0.8% from the immediately previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, second negative result in a row, when there was a cumulative loss of 3.1%. This way, the segment is, this month, 3.4% below the (pre-pandemic) level of February 2020, and 24.8% below that of February 2014 (peak of the time series).

Volume of cargo transportation, in turn, recorded an increase of 2.5% in June 2022, with a cumulative increase of 16.7% since October 2021. This way, the segment hit a new record, the peak of its time series this month. In comparison with the pre-pandemic level, cargo transportation is 29.4% above that of February 2020.

Against June 2021, in the series without seasonal adjustment, transportation of passengers recorded its 15th positive rate, having advanced 20.8% in June 2022. Cargo transportation increased 15.8%, and recorded its 22nd positive result in a row.

In the cumulative index in the first semester of 2022, transportation of passengers recorded an increase of 44.5% against the same period in 2021, whereas cargo transportation advanced 13.0%.
