Retail sales drop 1.4% in June

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of sales of the retail trade dropped 1.4% in June 2022 over May. It had changed -0.4% in the previous month.

After rising 0.5% in May, the quarterly moving average changed -0.4% in June.

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the retail changed -0.3% over June 2021.

The cumulative index in the year reached 1.4% and the cumulative index in the last 12 months, -0.9%.

In the extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, volume of sales dropped 2.3%. The moving average declined 1.0%.

The cumulative index over the year was 0.3% and the cumulative index in 12 months, -0.8%.

After registering a marginal growth in volume of sales in the first four months of 2022, the results of May and June reversed the trend, with -0.4% in May and -1.4% in June. As a result, the first semester of 2022 accumulated a rise of 1.4% against the first semester of 2021.  The June´s result was -4.6% below the peak of the time series, recorded in October 2020, and 1.6% above the pre-pandemic level (February 2020).

In June, the major influences on the retail were fabric, apparel and footwear and hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco.

Seven out of eight activities retreated in the seasonally-adjusted series

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the drop of 1,.% in volume of sales of the retail in June 2022 was followed by seven out of eight activities: fabric, apparel and footwear (-5.4%), books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-3.8%), office, computer and communication equipment and material (-1.7%), other articles of personal and domestic use (-1.3%), fuels and lubricants (-1.1%), furniture and domestic appliances (-0.7%) and hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.5%).

On the other hand, the sector of pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic  articles and toiletries grew (1.3%) between May and June 2022.

The extended retail trade fell 2.3%, with figures on the negative side both for vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories (-4.1%) and construction material (-1.0%).

Six out of eight activities in retail registered positive rates over June 2021

Compared with June last year, the retail trade showed a predominance of positive rates, hitting six out of eight activities:  pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic  articles and toiletries (11.0%); fuels and lubricants (7.8%); books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (2.6%); fabric, apparel and footwear (2.2%); hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.5%); and office, computer and communication equipment and material (1.4%). Other two activities dropped: other articles of personal and domestic use (-11.4%) and furniture and domestic appliances (-14.7%).

In the extended retail trade, vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded a decrease of 7.1% and Construction material fell by 11.4%.

The activity of pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic  articles and toiletries increased 11.0% in sales over June 2021, the eighth month of growth in a row. That sector contributed with 1.2 p.p. to the overall rate (-0.3%), the greatest influence on the positive side among the six activities that grew. The inter-annual comparison for June 2022 was also the second highest in magnitude, only surpassed by the change in January 2022 in relation to January 2021 (14.2%). That sector accumulated a growth of 8.4% in the first semester of 2022, above what was accumulated up to May (7.9%), stepping up the upward pace. The scenario was different in the last 12 months: 6.5% up to May against 6.4% up to June, pointing out to a stable growth.

The sector of fuels and lubricants rose 7.8% in sales over June 2021, the fifth positive figure in a row (February: 0.1%; March: 12.3%; and May: 7.2%). Having changed from 4.5% up to May to 5.0% in the reference month, the cumulative index in the year up to June showed an increase in the pace. In contrast, the cumulative result in the last 12 months remained at the same level: 1.1% up to May and 0.9% up to June 2022.

The inter-annual figure for books, newspapers, magazines and stationery was a rise of 2.6% in sales in June 2022 over the same month of 2021. This was the second month in which that sector grew in this indicator: in May 2022, the result had been 25.8% when compared with May 2021. The cumulative rate was 18.4% in the semester, below the cumulative result up to May (21.3%), pointing out to a loss of pace. In the last 12 months, the result was 4.0% up to June, 0.9 p.p. below the result up to May (4.9%).

The activity of fabric, apparel and footwear rose 2.2% over June 2021. Such result was the sixth one on the positive side for the sector and the fourth one in a descending sequence of values: 81.3% in March; 33.9% in April; 8.5% in May; and 2.2% in June. The first semester of 2022 accumulated a growth of 17.2% in relation to the same period of 2021, a figure below that recorded in the first five months of the year: 21.4%. The scenario also decelerated in the last 12 months: 12.9% up to May against 9.3% up to June.

Taking into account the data of June 2022, the sector of hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco reversed the negative figure registered in May in relation to the inter-annual indicator: 1.5% in sales in June 2022 against June 2021, against drop of 0.5% in May 2022 in relation to May 2021. Having changed from -1.5% up to May to -1.1% in June in terms of the cumulative result over the last 12 months, that sector decreased the pace of drop.

The group of office, computer and communication equipment and material recorded an increase of 1.4% in sales over June 2021 against 2.1% in May 2022 over May 2021. The cumulative index in the year was 0.7% over the same period of 2021, at the same level as the cumulative indicator up to May: 0.5%. The cumulative rate in 12 months changed from -4.1% up to May to -4.3% in June.

The activity of other articles of personal and domestic use, which encompasses department, optical, jewelry, sports and toy stores among others, registered the second drop in the inter-annual indicator: -7.2% in May 2022 over May 2021 and -11.4% in June over the same month in 2021. That activity exerted the major negative contribution to the overall rate, adding -1.6 p.p. to the total of -0.3% of the retail. As a result, that sector accumulated -2.8% in the year, below that accumulated up to May (-0.9%). The cumulative index in 12 months changed from 1.6% in May to -0.8% in June, the first negative rate since July 2020 (-0.8%).

In the case of furniture and domestic appliances, the sector fell 14.7% in sales over June 2021, the third consecutive negative figure in the comparison between a month against the same month a year ago: -8.7% in April and -12.5% in May. Having the cumulative index in the year up to June changed from -8.2% up to May to -9.3% in the first semester of 2022, that activity stepped up the loss of pace. The cumulative rate in the last 12 months changed from –14.3% in May to –15.0% in June 2022.

In the extended retail, vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories retreated 7.1% over June 2021, reversing the trend of the previous month (0.8%). That activity exerted the more intense negative contribution among the ten sectors that comprise the indicator, adding -1.7 p.p. to the total of -3.1% of the extended retail trade. In the year, that sector accumulated 0.4% in relation to the same period of 2021, a result lower than that accumulated up to May (2.1%). The cumulative rate in 12 months changed from 6,0% up to May to 3.0% in June, reducing the pace of growth.

The inter-annual figure for construction material was also negative: -11.4% in sales over June 2021. However, the drop in June represented the third consecutive one for that sector: -9.9% in April and -7.7% in May, in the comparison with the same month of the previous year. The losses also stepped up in the cumulative index over the last 12 months: -4.1% up to April, -6.4% up to May and -7.7% up to June.

Retail accumulates a rise of 1.4% in first semester

The retail trade accumulated a growth of 1.4% in the first semester of 2022 over the same period of 2021, the first positive rate after the result of -3.0% in the second semester of 2021. As a result, three out of five last semesters were positive (second of 2020: 5.1%; second of 2021: 6.7%; and first of 2022: 1.4%) and two were negative (first semester of 2020: -3.2% and the second semester of 2021: -3.0%). The extended retail recorded the same path: -7.7% in the first semester of 2020; 4.2% in the second of 2020; 12.3% in the first of 2021; -1.7% in the second of 2021; and 0.3% in the first of 2022.

In sectoral terms, the first semester of 2022 grew in six activities of the  retail trade in the comparison of semester against same semester of the previous year: books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (18.4%); fabric, apparel and footwear (17.2%); pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic articles and toiletries (8.4%); fuels and lubricants (5.0%); office, computer and communication equipment and material (0.7%); and hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.4%). Two activities reported negative figures in the semester: Furniture and domestic appliances (–9.3%) and Other articles of personal and domestic use (-2.8%).

In the extended retail trade, vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories closed the first semester of 2022 on the positive side (0.4%), whereas construction material dropped (-7.3%).

Sales drop in 23 Federation Units in relation to May

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the retail trade changed -1.4% in June, with negative figures in 23 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Minas Gerais (-7.7%), São Paulo (-2.5%) and Espírito Santo (-2.5%). Four out of 27 FUs recorded positive rates, highlighted by Paraíba (2.5%), Tocantins (1.0%) and Maranhão (0.4%).

In the same comparison for the extended retail trade, the change between May and June 2022 was of –2.3, with a predominance of negative results in 23 out of 27 Federation Units, especially in: Ceará (-5.2%), Minas Gerais (-4.6%) and Bahia (-4.5%). On the other hand, four out of 27 Federation Units pressed positively, highlighted by Mato Grosso do Sul (1.2%), Mato Grosso (1.0%) and Pernambuco (0.5%).

Sales rise in 14 out of 27 Federation Units in the annual comparison

The national retail trade changed -0.3% over June 2021, with positive figures in 14 out of 27 FUs, highlighted by: Roraima (13.3%), Alagoas (11.4%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (9.5%). On the other hand, 13 out of the 27 Federation Units pressed negatively, highlighted by: Bahia (-5.3%), Goiás (-3.8%) and Acre (-3.6%).

Considering the extended retail trade, the change between June 2022 and June 2021 showed a retreat of 3.1%, with negative results in 17 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Bahia (-11.2%), Pernambuco (-11.1%) and Acre (-8.4%). On the other hand, ten out of 27 Federation Units pressed positively, highlighted by Mato Grosso do Sul (6.5%), Roraima (4.6%) and Tocantins (4.6%).
