Among the major economic categories, also in the seasonally adjusted series, durable consumer goods (2.8%) had the highest positive rate in June 2022 and intensified the pace of growth compared to the results of May (1.9%) and April (0.9%). The sector producing semi and non-durable consumer goods (0.7%) also increased in this month, after having registered a negative change of 0.2% in the previous month.
On the other hand, capital goods (-0.9%) and intermediate goods (-0.5%) showed negative results in June 2022, with the former eliminating part of the 3.4% gain registered in March-May 2022; and the latter interrupting the predominantly upward trajectory that began in January of that year.
Compared to June 2021, industry retreats 0.5%
In comparison with June 2021, the industrial sector registered a decline of 0.5% in June 2022, with negative results in one of the four major economic categories, 14 of the 26 branches, 49 of the 79 groups and 54.2% of the 805 products researched. It is worth mentioning that June 2022 (21 days) had the same number of working days as the same month of the previous year (21).
Among the activities, the main negative influences on the total of industry were registered by mining and quarrying industries (-5.4%), basic metals (-8.3%) and pharmaceutical products (-19.6%), pressured, to a great extent by the lower production of crude petroleum oils and iron ores, in the first; ferroniobium, carbon steel cold and hot-rolled coils, carbon steel rod wires, carbon steel rebars, carbon steel wires, flexible and drawn tubes of iron and steel and copper and copper alloy bars, profiles and in the second; and medicines, in the third.
It is also worth mentioning the negative contributions registered by the sectors of non-metallic mineral products (-6.9%), fabricated metal products (-6.0%), other chemical products (-2.6%), , electrical machinery, equipment and materials (-6.3%), rubber and plastic products (-3.4%), textile products (-8.3%), wood products (-8.4%) , furniture (-9.3%) and miscellaneous products (-8.3%).
On the other hand, also in the comparison with June 2021, among the 12 activities on the rise, coke, petroleum products and biofuels (8.6%) and motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (5.9%) exerted the greatest influences in the formation of the industry average, driven, to a large extent, by a higher production of diesel fuel, fuel oils, naphtha for petrochemicals, aviation kerosene and motor gasoline, in the first; and cars and tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers, in the second.
Other important positive impacts were registered by pulp, paper and paper products (7.5%), leather, travel articles and footwear (15.9%), maintenance, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (18.5%) and food products (1.0%).
Among the major economic categories, also in the comparison with the same month of the previous year, intermediate goods (-1.8%) had the only negative rate. On the other hand, the sectors producing durable consumer goods (2.3%), semi and non-durable consumer goods (1.3%) and capital goods (0.2%) showed increases in the month.
The intermediate goods producer sector fell by 1.8% in June 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, the second consecutive negative rate in this comparison. This month's result was mainly explained by the declines in mining and quarrying industries (-5.4%), basic metals (-8.3%), non-metallic mineral products (-6.9%), metal products (-6 .6%), rubber and plastic products (-5.1%), other chemical products (-2.5%), textiles (-8.1%) and food products (-0.7%), while positive pressures came from coke, petroleum products and biofuels (11.9%), pulp, paper and paper products (7.5%), motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (2.9%) and machinery and equipment (0.2%).
Still in this economic category, it is worth mentioning the declines in typical inputs for civil construction (-7.3%), which marked the tenth consecutive decline in this type of comparison; and packaging (-0.6%), which again showed a loss after interrupting last May (0.2%) eleven consecutive months of decline in production.
The production of capital goods had a positive change of 0.2% in the monthly index of June 2022, the second consecutive positive result in this type of comparison. The index for this month was influenced by the expansion observed in most groups, especially capital goods for transportation equipment (4.1%), influenced, to a large extent, by the greater production of tractor trucks for trailers and semi-trailers.
The other positive rates were in capital goods for electricity (22.0%), agricultural (14.0%) and construction purposes (17.6%). On the other hand, the main negative impact came from the subsector of capital goods for industrial purposes (-7.0%), pressured by the lower production of serial (-7.2%) and non-serial capital goods (-6 .3%). It is also worth mentioning the 9.0% decrease in the group of mixed-use capital goods.
Also in comparison with the same month of the previous year, the segment of semi- and non-durable consumer goods grew 1.3% in June 2022, the third consecutive positive rate in this type of comparison, but the least intense in this sequence. The positive performance in this month was explained, mainly, by the expansion observed in the groups of semi-durables (7.9%) and food products and beverages made for domestic consumption (2.0%).
It is also worth mentioning the positive result registered by the group of fuels (1.3%), influenced by the greater production of automotive gasoline. On the other hand, the group of non-durables (-4.3%) had the only negative rate in the month, mostly due to the decrease in the production of medicines.
The durable consumer goods sector advanced 2.3% in June 2022 compared to the same period in 2021, thus interrupting 11 consecutive months of negative rates in this type of comparison. In the month, the sector was boosted, to a large extent, by the largest production of cars (21.4%). Other important positive impacts came from beverages (2.9%) and maintenance, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (5.9%).
Among the major economic categories, the profile of the results for the first half of 2022 showed less dynamism for consumer durables (-11.7%), mostly pressured by the reductions observed in the manufacture of white goods (-21.7%) and the brown goods (-12.6%) and cars (-7.0%).
