Retail sales change 0.1% in May

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of sales of the retail trade changed 0.1% in May 2022 over April. That was the fifth consecutive figure on the positive side.

The quarterly moving average grew 0.7%.

In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the retail trade changed -0.2% over May 2021, the first negative rate after three months of rises. The cumulative index in the year reached 1.8% and the cumulative index in the last 12 months, -0.4%.

In the extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and construction material, volume of sales changed 0.2%. The moving average stayed at 0.2%. The cumulative index over the year was 1.0% and the cumulative index in 12 months, 0.3%.

In May, the Brazilian retail trade, on the margin, remained stable (0.1%) over April, recording five consecutive months on the positive side: 2.3% in January, 1.4% in February, 1.4% in March and 0.8% in April. As a result, the level of the seasonally-adjusted time series was 6.0% above the minimum level, registered in December 2021.

The major influences on the retail in May came from: Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic  articles and toiletries and Fabric, apparel and footwear, on the positive side, and Furniture and domestic appliances and Other articles of personal and domestic use, on the negative side.

Six out of eight activities advanced in the seasonally-adjusted series

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the change of 0.1% in volume of sales of the retail in May 2022 was followed by positive rates in six out of eight activities, highlighted by: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (5.5%), Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic  articles and toiletries (3.6%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (3.5%), Fuels and lubricants (2.1%), Office, computer and communication equipment and material (2.0%) and Hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco (1.0%).

On the other hand, two out of eight groups surveyed dropped between April and May: Other articles of personal and domestic use (-2.2%) and Furniture and domestic appliances (-3.0%).

In the extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories changed -0.2%, whereas Construction material dropped 1.1% between April and May 2022.

Five out of eight activities in retail registered positive rates over May 2021

Compared with May 2021, the retail trade showed a predominance of positive rates, hitting five out of eight activities: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (25.8%), Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic  articles and toiletries (9.2%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (8.3%), Fuels and lubricants (7.1%) and Office, computer and communication equipment and material (2.0%). Completing the eight activities of the retail, three of them dropped: Furniture and domestic appliances (-12.6%), Other articles of personal and domestic use (-7.1%) and Hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco (-0.5%).

In the extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories increased 0.8%, whereas Construction material retreated 7.7% between May 2021 and May 2022.

The activity of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery grew 25.8% over May 2021, against a drop of 0.9% in April 2022 over April 2021.  Having changed from 20.5% up to April to 21.3% in the reference month, the cumulative index in the year up to May shows an increase in the pace. Having changed from an increase of 5.8% up to April to 4.9% in May in the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months, this sector reduced the intensity of growth.

The group of Pharmaceutical, medical, orthopedic  articles and toiletries grew 9.2% in sales over May 2021, the seventh consecutive month of rise (the last result on the negative side had been in October, with -0.2%).  This sector accumulated 7.9% in the year up to May, a level similar to that accumulated up to April (7.6%), pointing out a maintenance of the pace of growth of this sector. In the last 12 months, the cumulative indicator up to May closed at 6.5%, the lowest level for this indicator since August 2020 (6.2%).

The sector of Fabric, apparel and footwear rose 8.3% in sales over May 2021, against an increase of 33,9% in April 2022 over April 2021, the fifth consecutive figure on the positive side. This sector accumulated a drop of 21.3% up to May, a result below that of April (26.7%), pointing out to a reduction of pace. The reduction in the growth intensity also occurred in the cumulative index over the last 12 months: 19.4% up to April to 12.9% up to May.

Fuels and lubricants increased 7.1% in sales over May 2021, the third consecutive month of rise (12.3% in February and 9.8% in March, in relation to the same month in the previous year). This sector has been showing results impacted by inflation: the inter-annual indicator of nominal revenue advanced 38.5% in May, 46.7% in April and 44.2% in March. In the year, this sector accumulated 4.5% up to May, 0.7 p.p. above the value up to April (3.8%). Having changed from 1.9% up to April to 1.1% in May in volume, the cumulative index over the last 12 months of this sector reduced the growth intensity.

The sector of Office, computer and communication equipment and material grew 2.0% over May 2021, against a change of -0.4% in April 2022 over April 2021.  Along the year of 2022, the inter-annual indicator registered two months with positive figures and three on the negative side: -7.6% in January, -8.0% in February, 16.5% in March, -0.4% in April and 2.0% in May, in relation to the same month in the previous year. In the year, this sector accumulated a rate close to zero for the third month in a row: 0.2% up to March, 0.1% up to April and 0.5% up to May. The cumulative index over the last 12 months retreated from -2.3% up to April to -4.1% in May.

The activity of Furniture and domestic appliances fell 12.6% over May 2021, the second consecutive drop (-8.7% in April 2022 over April 2021).  Having changed from -6.9% up to April to -8.2% in the reference month, this activity stepped up the loss of pace. The cumulative indicator in the last 12 months recorded -14.3% in May, the eighth consecutive drop and the lowest value since October 2016 (-14.4%).

The group of Other articles of personal and domestic use, which encompasses department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting good stores and toy stores, dropped 7.1% over May 2021, the first negative result for the inter-annual indicator after three months of positive figures. Having changed from 0.9% up to April to -0.9% in the reference month, the cumulative index in the year up to May inverted the pace of sales. Having changed from an increase of 5.6% up to April to 1.7% in May in the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months, this sector reduced the intensity of growth.

The sector of Hyper and supermarket, food products, beverages and tobacco dropped 0.5% in sales over May 2021, against an increase of 4.1% in April 2022 over April 2021. Having changed from 0.4% up to April to 0.2% in the reference month, the cumulative index in the year up to May showed a stable pace. The cumulative index over the last 12 months changed from -1.8% up to April to -1.5% in May.

In the extended retail, the activity of Construction material dropped 7.7% in sales over May 2021, against -9.9% in April 2022 over April 2021.  The result in the year stayed at -6.4% up to May, below that accumulated until April (-6.0%). The cumulative result over the last 12 months changed from -4.1% up to April to -6.4% in May.

The group of vehicles and motorcycles, parts and accessories rose 0.8% in sales over May 2021, reversing the signal in relation to the April´s indicator (-1.8%). Having changed from 2.4% up to April to 2.1% in the reference month, the cumulative index in the year up to May showed a stable growth pace. The cumulative index over the last 12 months retreated from 10.0% up to April to 6.0% in May.

Sales grow in 18 Federation Units in relation to April

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the retail trade changed 0.1% in May, with positive figures in 18 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Minas Gerais (3.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.1%) and Roraima (3.1%). Nine out of 27 FUs reported negative rates, highlighted by Rondônia (-2.8%), Rio Grande do Norte (-2.3%) and Tocantins (-2.1%). 

In the same comparison, the extended retail trade changed 0.2% between April and May 2022, with positive figures in 15 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Tocantins (3.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (3.5%) and Sergipe (2.5%). On the other hand, 12 out of 27 Federation Units pressed negatively, highlighted by Ceará (-5.3%), Amazonas (-3.1%) and Rio Grande do Norte (-3.0%).

The national retail trade changed -0.2% over May 2021, with negative figures in ten out of 27 FUs, highlighted by: Amapá (-10.6%), Bahia (-7.4%) and Pernambuco (-7.0%). On the other hand, 17 out of 27 FUs pressed positively, highlighted by Roraima (11.0%), Alagoas (9.7%) and Mato Grosso do Sul  (7.9%).

Considering the extended retail trade, the change between May 2022 and May 2021 showed a retreat of 0.7%, with negative results in 11 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Amapá (-11.1%), Pernambuco (-10.9%) and Bahia (-6.6%). Conversely, 16 out of 27 FUs pressed positively, highlighted by Sergipe (11.2%), Roraima (8.2%) and Tocantins (7.2%).
