Industrial production changes by 0.3% in May

In May 2022, the national output of industry changed by 0.3% from April, in the seasonally-adjusted series. Against May 2021, in the non-adjusted series, industry increased 0.5%. Industry presents a cumulative decrease of 2.6% in the year and of -1.9% in 12 months.

Industrial production, having recorded a positive chane of 0.3% in May 2022, marhad its fourth month of increase in a row, but not still making up for the decrease of 1.9% observed last July. This onth’s result is predominantly positive, since 3 of the 4 major economic categories and 19 of the 26 industrial activities surveyd recorded increases in output. With these results, the industrial sector is still 1.1% below the record level of the pre-pandemic period (February 2020) and 17.6% below the record level of May 2011.

Among the activities, the main positive contributions came from machinery and equipment (7.5%) and motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (3.7%), both if which increased once more after showing decline in the previous month: -3.1% and -4.6%, respectively.

Other relative positive contributions to the industry overall were those of food products (1.3%), leather, travel articles and footwear (9.4%), electrical machinery and apparatus (5.5%), other transportation equipment (10.3%), miscellaneous manufacturing (9.0%), maintenance, repair and installation of machinery and equipment (7.5%) and computer equipment, optical and electronic products (3.6%).

On the other hand, considering the seven activities with decrease in output, mining and quarrying industry (-5.6%) and other chemicals (-8.0%) accounted for the main impacts in May 2022, with both of them making up for the cumulative increase of February-April 2022: 6.4% and 12.0%, respectively.

Among the major economic categories, also against April 2022, capital goods (7.4%) and durable consumer goods (3.0%) recorded the highest positive rates in May 2022, both of which increased again after recording -6.8% and -5.3%, in April, respectively. The sector of semi and non-durable consumer goods (0.8%) also increased, but at a lower rate than in the previous month (2.3%).

On the other hand, the segment of semi and non-durable consumer goods (-1.3%) accounted for the only negative rate in May 2022, interrupting three consecutive months of output increase, a period marked by a cumulative rise of 3.8%.

Quarterly moving average advances 0.4% in quarter ended May

Also in the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average for the industry overall recorded a positive change of 0.4% in the quarter ended May 2022 against the previous month and kept the predominantly upward trend observed since November 2021.

Among the major economic categories, in the seasonally adjusted series, the highest rate was that of capital goods (2.5%), in its third consecutive month of increase and with a cumulative increase of 4.1% in the period. Intermediate goods (0.1%) have been on an upward trend since November 2021.

The only negative result in the month was that of the segment of semi and nin-durable goods (-0,.%), after recording a positive change of 0.1% in April. The sector that produces durable consumer goods showed null change (0.0%) in May 2022, after negative rates in February (-0.7%), March (-3.7%) and April (-0.5%).

Against May 2021, industry increased 0.5%

Against May 2021, the industrial sector grew 0.5%, with positive figures in May 2022, with positive results in two of the four major economic categories, 12 of the 26 sectors, 34 of the 79 groups and 47.2% of the 805 products surveyed. It is worth mentioning that May 2022 (22 days) had one more business day than the same month in the prior year (21).

Among the activities coke, petroleum products and biofuels (15.3%) accounted for the main contribution to the average of industry, affected to the bigger production of fuel oils, diesel aviation kerosene, naphtha for petrochemical industry, automotive gasoline and liquefied petroleum gas (GLP).

There were positive contributions by the segments of machinery and equipment (5.5%), leather, travel articles and footwear (24.8%), beverages (6.3%), maintenance, repair and installation of material and equipmen (15.4%), computer equipment, electronic and optical products (7.2%) and other transportation equipment (9.7%).

On the other hand, against May 2021, among the fourteen activities with decreases in production, the main negative contributions to the industry overall came from mining and quarrying industry (-8.2%), basic metals (-5.5%) and food products (-1.6%).

Mining and quarrying industry were affected by the reduced manufacture of crude or benefited iron ore and crude petroleum oil. In basic metals, there were decreases in the production of uncoated cold-rolled and hot-rolled steel carbon coil, carbon steel wire rod, flexible and drawn iron and steel tubes, ounwrought gold, carbon steel wires and copper and copper alloy bars, profiles and rebars and tinplates.

The result of food industry was affected by VHP, granulated and refined sugar from sugarcane, gournd and roast coffee, sterelized/UHT/Long Life milk, condensed milk and ice creams and popsicles.

Other negative impacts came from metal products (-5.8%), electrical machinery and apparatus (-6.2%), non-metallic mineral products (-3.7%), manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories (6.5%) and other chemicals (-1.7%).

Among the major economic categories, also in comparison with the same month a year ago, capital goods (5.7%) and semi and non-durable goods (2.2%) recorded, in May 2022, the main positive rates among the major economic categories. On the other hand, producers of durable consumer goods (-2.1%) and of intermediate goods (-0.9%) recorded increases in the month.

Producers of capital goods advanced 5.7% in May 2022, against the same period in te previous year, after a decrease of 4.9% last April. The sector was influenced by the increase observed in most of the groups, with a highlight to capital goods for transportation equipment (6.9%), due, to a great extent, to the increased production of tractor trucks for trailers and semi trailers and airplanes.

The other positive rates came from the capital goods for construction (37.9%), for electricity (23.4%), for agriculture (6.9%) and for mixed use (3.8%).

On the other hand, the only negative impact was that of capital goods for industrial use (-4.5%), as a result of the lower production of serial capital goods (-4.0%) and non-serial capital goods (-7.7%).

The production of semi and non durable consumer goods recorded an increase of 2.2% in the monthly index of 2022, after also advancing last April (3.1%), when it interrupted a period of nine consecutive months of negative rates in this type of comparison.

The positive performance this month was mainly explained by the expansion in the group of food and beverages produced for domestic consumption (1.9%) and semi-durable goods (5.1%). Other relevant positive results came from fuels (3.1%) and non-durable goods (0.3%).

The sector of intermediate goods increased 0.9% in May 2022, after recording null change in April (0.0%), when it interruptes a period of eight months of negative rates in a row, in this type of comparison. This month’s result was mainly due to drops in mining and quarrying industries (-8.2%), basic metals (-5.5%), food products (-4.6%), metal products (-8.1%) and non-metallic mineral products (-3.6%), rubber and plastic products (-3.7%), other chemicals (-1.6%) and textiles (-2.8%).

Positive contributions came from coke, petroleum products and biofuels (21.1%), motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (1.6%), machinery and equipment (2.0%) and pulp, paper and paper products (0.7%).

Also in this economic category, it is worth mentioning results of typical inputs for civil construction (-4.5%), which represented the ninth drop in a row in this type of comparison, and of packages (0.2%), which interrupted eleven consecutive months of decrease in production.

The sector producing durable consumer goods retreated 2.1% in May 2022 against the same period a year ago, eleventh consecutive negative result in this type of comparison, but the lowest in this sequence. The sector was affected by the reduction in the manufacture of white goods (-13.6%) and cars (-1.8%).

It is also worth mentioning the retreats registered by other household appliances (-22.2%) and furniture (-7.9%). On the other hand, the main positive impacts came from the increased manufacture of motorcycles (24.2%) and brown goods (8.2%).

All the major economic categories recorded cumulative increases in the year.

In the cumulative index against the same period a year ago, the industrial sector dropped 2.6%, with negative figures in four of the four major economic categories, 19 out of the 26 sectors, 57 of the 79 groups and 62.1% of the 805 products surveyed.

Among the activities, the main negative influences on the overall industry were registered by motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (-7.6%), fabricated metal products (-13.3%), rubber and plastic products (-11.2%), and electrical machines, appliances and material (-16.2%).

It is also worth highlighting the negative contributions registered by the sectors of mining and quarrying industry (-2.8%), basic metals (-4.8%), textiles (-16.6%), furniture (-21.8%), manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories (-11.8%), non-metallic mineral products (-4.8%), pharmaceuticals (-6.8%), toiletries, soaps, cleaning and personal hygiene products (-6.6%) and machinery and equipment (-1.6%).

Also in comparison with January-May 2021, among the six activities with increase in output, coke, petroleum products and biofuels (10.6%) accounted for the main influence, influenced by the bigger production of fuel oils, diesel, automotive gasoline, aviatio kerosene and naphthas for petrochemicaç industry. Other positive impact came from beverages (3.4%) and other chemicals (1.3%).

Among the major economic categories, the profile of results perfil dos resultados para os cinco primeiros meses de 2022 mostrou menor dinamismo para bens de consumo duráveis (-14,1%), pressionada, em grande parte, pelas reduções verificadas na fabricação de automóveis (-11,7%) e de eletrodomésticos da “linha branca” (-23,4%) e da “linha marrom” (-13,2%).

The segments of intermediate goods (-2.1%), semi and non-durable consumer goods (-1.5%) and capital goods (-1.1%) also had cumulative negative results in the year, though they were below the average of industry (-2.6%).
