Retail trade sales increase 0.9% in April

In April 2022 the volume of retail trade sales increased 0.9% from the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series, fourth increase of this indicator in a row. The quarterly moving average amounted to 1.2%.

In the non-adjusted series, retail trade increased by 4.5% from April 2021, third consecutive increase. In the year 2022, retail trade has a cumulative increase of 2.3%, whereas in the last 12 months the result was 0.8%.
Extended retail trade, which includes Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, volume of sales changed 0.7% in relation to March and the quarterly moving average was 1.1%. In relation to April 2021, extended retail increased 1.5%, third consecutive increase. In the year, the cumulative index was 1.4%, and, in the last 12 months, 2.2%.
Four of the eight retail activities recorded positive results in April
The change of 0.9% in volume of sales of retail trade, from March to April 2022, seasonally-adjusted series showed, in the sectors, balance between negative and positive rates. Furniture and household appliances (2.3%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (1.7%), Pharmaceutical, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (0.4%) and Other personal and domestic articles (0.1%) recorded positive results.
Fuels and lubricants (-0.1%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-1.1%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-5.6%) and Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-6.7%) recorded negative changes. For extended retail trade, both Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces (-0.2%) and Construction material (-2.0%) recorded negative results.

Comércio varejista cresce 4,5% frente a abril de 2021
Against April 2021, retail trade increased in five of the eight activities surveyed: Fabric, apparel and footwear (33.9%), Fuels and lubricants (9.7%), Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (4,.%), Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (3.5%) and Other personal and domestic articles (1.5%). On the other hand, three activities recorded a decrease in the interannual comparison: Furniture and household appliances (-8.7%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-0.9%) and Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-0.5%). Considering extended retail trade, Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded a decrease of 2.1% and Construction material fell by 10.1%.

The activity Fabric, apparel and footwear increased 33.9% against April 2021, fourth positive result in a row. As a result, the sector accounted for the second biggest contribution to retail trade, with 1.1 p.p. In the year, the sector had a cumulative increase of 26.7%. In the last 12 months, having changed from 23.5% in March to 19.4% in April, the sector recorded reduction in the intensity of increase.
The sector of Fuels and lubricants increased 9.7% against April 2021, versus an increase of 12.3% in March 2022. In relation to the cumulative index in the year, with a change from 1.7% in March to 3.7% in April, the activity shows increase in the pace of sales. In terms of the cumulative index in the last 12 months, with a change from 2.5% in March to 1.9% in April, the sector recorded a decrease in the intensity of increase.
The activity of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco increased 4.0% in sales against April 2021, versus an increase of 3.4% in the previous month. The result of April also represented the biggest contribution to retail trade, with 2.0 p.p. In the year, the sector had a cumulative increase of 0.4%, opposite to what happened in March (-0.9%). Considering the index in 12 months, with a change from -2.3% in March to -1.8% in April, the sector records a decrease in the pace of decrease.
Pharmaceuticals, medical orthopedic articles and toiletries increased for the sixth month in a row in the interannual indicator, and reached 3.5% in sales against April 2021. Considering the cumulative index in the year, the start of April represented a decrease in the pace of increase of 8.9% until March versus 7.6% until April.
The activity Other personal and domestic articles, which encompasses department stores, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores, toy stores, etc., which increased from 1.5¨% in April, third increase in a row after six months of decrease. In the year, the result is positive in 1.0%, and kept the pace in the previous month (0.9% up to March). In the last 12 months there was a cumulative result of 5.7%, below the comparison up to March (9.9%).
The sector of Furniture and household appliances fell 8.7% against April 2021, and recorded, again, a negative result in the interannual reading, since the month of March recorded an increase of 7.2% after nine months of negative results. Also, the activity was the only one to have a negative influence in the global indicator, with a contribution of -0.9 p.p. In terms of the cumulative index in the year, with a change from -6.3% in March to -6.9% in April, the activity recorded a decrease in the pace of decrease.
The group Books newspapers, magazines and stationery recorded a decrease 0.9% against April 2021. This is the first month of positive results for the activity after three consecutive months of increase. In relation to the cumulative index in the year, with a change from 25.8% in March to 20.4% in April, the activity recorded deceleration of increase. The same is true for the cumulative index in the last twelve months: 9.7% until March and 5.8% until April.
The sector of Office, computer and communication material and equipment recorded a rate of -0.5% from April 2021, after an increase of 16.5% in the previous month. In the year, the sector remains recording results close to stability: 0.2% up to March versus up to April. On the contrary, considering the cumulative index in the 12 months, with a change from -0.2% in March
to -2.3% in April, the sector recorded deceleration of increase.
In extended retail trade, the activity Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded a decrease of 2.1% against 2021, the first one after five consecutive months of increase. The sector also accounted for the second biggest negative contribution to the overall rate of extended retail (-0.5 p.p.). In comparison with the cumulative index in the year, with a change from 3.9% in March to 2.3% in April, the activity indicates deceleration, the same as in the cumulative indicator for the last 12 months: 15.9% up to March to 10.0% up to April.
Also in extended retail trade, the activity of Construction material fell 10.1% against April 2021, versus an increase of 1.2% in the previous month. Against the cumulative index in the year, with a change from -4.8% up to March to -6.1% up to April, the activity recorded an increase in the pace of decrease, similarly to what was observed in the cumulative index in 12 months, which changed from -1.0% in March to -4.1% in April.
Retail trade records positive results in 19 of the federation Units from March to April /strong>
From March to April 2022, in the seasonally adjusted series, the average national rate of retail trade sales increased 0.9%, with positive results in 19 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to: Amazonas (4.4%), Rio Grande do Norte (4.0%) and Alagoas (3.8%). On the other hand, eight states had negative results, mainly: Pernambuco (-7.7%), Roraima (-4.5%) and Pará (-4.4%).
In the same comparison, retail trade recorded positive results in 18 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to: Ceará (6.6%), Amazonas (6.4%) and Rio Grande do Norte (3.4%). On the other hand, with negative results are 9 of the 27 Federation Units, with a highlight to Espírito Santo (-5.3%), Roraima (-2.5%) and Goiás (-2.3%).
Against April 2021, retail trade recorded an increase of 4.5%, with positive results in 23 of the 27 Federation Units and a highlight to: Ceará (18.5%), Alagoas (15.1%) and Espírito Santo (14.9%). On the other hand, Pernambuco (-7.6%), Bahia (-4.9%) and Amazonas (-2.0%) accounted for negative results.
In terms of extended retail trade, between April 2021 and April 2022, there was a decrease of 1.5%, with positive results in 20 of the 27 Federation Units, especially in Alagoas (11.1%), Rio Grande do Norte (9.9%) and Ceará (9.2%). With negative results, the highlights were Pernambuco (-10.2%), Bahia (-5.8%) and Paraná (-3.6%).
