Agricultural storage capacity grows 1.5% and reaches 183.3 million metric tons in the 2nd half of 2021

In the 2nd semester of 2021, the available storage capacity in Brazil was 183.3 million metric tons, 1.5% higher than the previous semester. The number of establishments rose 1.2% compared to the 1st half of 2021.

Rio Grande do Sul has the largest number of storage establishments (2,159) and Mato Grosso has the largest capacity: 45.5 million metric tons.

The inventories of agricultural products totaled 36.7 million metric tons, a 31.1% increase from the 28 million metric tons of December 31, 2020.

In this second half of 2021, the North, Central-West and South Regions had increases in the number of establishments, of 3.8%, 1.8% and 1.3%, respectively, while the Southeast and Northeast showed drops of 0.1% and 0.4%.

Regarding the stocks of the five main agricultural products existing in the storage units, the stocks of corn represented the largest volume (16.9 million metric tons), followed by stocks of soybeans (7.7 million), wheat (6.4 million), rice (2.4 million) and coffee (1.1 million). These products constitute 94.0% of the total stocked among the products monitored by the survey.

Silo capacity reaches 92.5 million metric tons, up 2.3%

In terms of storage capacity, silos predominate in the country, having reached 92.5 million metric tons, which represented 50.4% of the total storage capacity. Compared to the first half of 2021, silo capacity grew by 2.3%.

Then there are automated and bulk warehouses, which reached 68.6 million metric tons of storage capacity, an increase of 1.3% compared to the previous semester. This type of warehouse is responsible for 37.4% of the national storage.

With regard to conventional, structural and inflatable warehouses, they totaled 22.3 million metric tons, which represented a decrease of 1.1% compared to the 1st half of 2021. These warehouses account for 12.2% of the total storage capacity.

By Major Region, silos predominate in the South, accounting for 63.1% of the region's storage capacity and 49.8% of the country's total silo capacity. Automated and bulk warehouses appear with greater intensity in the Central-West, with 53.6% of the region's capacity and 56.4% of the country's total capacity.

Conventional, structural and inflatable warehouses predominate in the South (34.7%), followed closely by the Southeast (31.6%). These two Major Regions together correspond to 66.3% of the total capacity of conventional, structural and inflatable warehouses in the country.

Number of establishments increases in the North, Central-West and South Regions

The Survey of Stocks detected 8,197 active establishments in the second half of 2021, an increase of 1.2% compared to the first half of 2021. In this period, the North, Central-West and South Regions had increases in the number of establishments of 3.8 %, 1.8% and 1.3%, respectively, while the Southeast and Northeast presented declines of 0.1% and 0.4%.

Rio Grande do Sul has the largest number of storage establishments (2,159), followed by Mato Grosso (1,397) and Paraná (1,340). Mato Grosso has the largest storage capacity in the country, with 45.5 million metric tons. Of this total, 59.1% are bulk warehouses and 34.2% are silos. Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná have 34.6 and 32.7 million metric tons of capacity, respectively, and silos predominate in these states.

Coffee stocks down 16%, but soybeans, wheat, rice and corn are up

The stock of agricultural products totaled 36.7 million metric tons, up 31.1% from the 28 million metric tons stocked in the country on December 31, 2020.

In the 2nd half of 2021, there were increases in the stocks of soybeans (81.4%), wheat (40.5%), rice (45.4%) and corn (20.3%), while the coffee stock dropped 16.0% compared to December 31, 2020. These products constitute 94.0% of the total stocked among the products monitored by the survey, with the remaining 6.0% composed of cotton, black beans, colored beans and other grains and seeds .
