Chicken slaughter drops, cattle and hogs and pigs grows in Q1 2022

The results of the animal production in the first quarter of 2022 pointed out that chicken slaughter retreated 1.7%, that of cattle increased 5.5% and that of pigs and hogs rose 7.2% compared with the same period of 2021. Compared with the fourth quarter of 2021, the slaughter of chicken fell 0.2%, that of cattle remained stable and that of and pigs and hogs grew 1.5%. Acquisition of raw milk reached 5.90 billion liters, with a drop of 10.3% in relation to the first quarter of 2021 and of 9.3% against the immediately previous quarter.

However, the acquisition of raw hides by tanning houses remained stable against the first quarter of 2021 and dropped 1.4% against the fourth quarter of 2021, adding up to 7.12 million raw hide pieces.

977.20 million dozens of hen eggs were produced in the first quarter this year, a drop of 2.0% in the annual comparison and of 2.5% compared with the immediately previous quarter.

Cattle slaughter rises 5.5% in relation to Q1 2021

In the first quarter of 2022, 6.96 million cattle head under some sort of sanitary inspection were slaughtered.  That amount was 5.5% higher than that obtained in the first quarter of 2021 and remained virtually stable against the fourth quarter of 2021.

All the months of the quarter registered positive changes in relation to the respective periods of 2021, highlighted by March (+8.0%), the more active month, when 2.47 million head were slaughtered.

After two years of drops in the comparison with the same quarter of the previous year, the slaughter of cows recorded a positive change of 12.9% in relation to the first period of 2021. On the other hand, the slaughter of oxen increased 1.1% in the same comparison

The slaughter of more 361.75 thousand cattle head in the first quarter of 2022 over the same period a year ago was leveraged by the increase in 16 out of 27 Federation Units. The most significant increases occurred in São Paulo (+92.79 thousand head), Mato Grosso (+78.71 thousand), Tocantins (+61.84 thousand), Pará (+56.77 thousand), Minas Gerais (+33.0 thousand) and Goiás (+28.63 thousand). In contrast, the biggest negative changes occurred in Rio Grande do Sul (-44.55 thousand), Santa Catarina (-16.94 thousand) and Acre (-6.82 thousand).

Mato Grosso remained leading cattle slaughter, with 16.1% of the national share, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (11.3%) and São Paulo (11.0%).

Slaughter of hogs and pigs is the biggest one for Q1 in the time series, started in 1997

13.64 million head of hogs and pigs were slaughtered in the first quarter of 2022, representing an increase of 7.2% in relation to the same period in 2021 and of 1.5% over the fourth quarter of 2021.

The best results for the slaughter of hogs and pigs were registered in the months of January, February and March, resulting in the best first quarter in the time series since the survey began in 1997.

The slaughter of more 920.43 thousand head of hogs and pigs in the first quarter of 2022 over the same period a year ago was leveraged by the increase in 19 out of 25 Federation Units. The increases occurred in Paraná (+229.39 thousand), Santa Catarina (+176.92 thousand), Rio Grande do Sul (+157.81 thousand), São Paulo (+143.33 thousand), Minas Gerais (+120.18 thousand), Mato Grosso do Sul (+26.64 thousand) and Goiás (+18.42 thousand). Them most significant drop occurred in Mato Grosso (5.04 thousand).

In the ranking of FUs, Santa Catarina remained leading the slaughter of hogs and pigs, with 28.1% of the national participation, followed by Paraná (20.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (17.4%).

Chicken slaughter drops in relation to Q1 2021

In the first quarter of 2022, 1.55 billion chicken head were slaughtered, accounting for a drop of 1.7% against the same period in 2021 and of 0.2% in relation to the fourth quarter of 2021.

The slaughter of less 27.25 million chicken head in the first quarter of 2022, in relation to the same period in the previous year, was determined by drops in the slaughter in 17 out of 25 Federation Units analyzed in the survey. The majors drops occurred in: Rio Grande do Sul (-9.97 million), Paraná (-6.54 million), Santa Catarina (-4.66 million), Mato Grosso (-2.39 million), São Paulo (-1.94 million) and Minas Gerais (-1.78 million). On the other hand, increases were reported in: Bahia (+2.66 million), Mato Grosso do Sul (+863.73 thousand) and Goiás (+644.09 thousand).

Paraná remained leading the slaughter of chicken in Brazil, with 33.5% of the national participation, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (13.5%) and Santa Catarina (13.2%).

Milk acquisition has record drop (-9.3%) against previous quarter

In the first quarter of 2022, the acquisition of raw milk by establishments under some sort of sanitary inspection (federal, state or municipal) was of 5.90 billion liters, representing a decrease of 10.3% in comparison with the amount produced in the first quarter of 2021 and a decrease of 9.3% against the immediately previous quarter, the biggest one in the time series in this comparison.

In the comparison between the first quarter of 2022 and the same period of 2021, the decrease of 678.01 million liters of milk obtained at national level resulted from decreases registered in 19 out of 26 FUs investigated. The most significant negative changes occurred in Goiás (-160.15 million liters), Minas Gerais (-158.73 million liters), Rio Grande do Sul (-100.77 million liters), Paraná (-73.06 million liters), São Paulo (-64.26 million liters) and Santa Catarina (-57.71 million liters). On the other hand, the most relevant increases occurred in Sergipe (+20.07 million liters), Ceará (+11.44 million liters) and Pernambuco (+9.94 million liters).

Minas Gerais still led the ranking of milk acquisition, with 25.5% of the national acquisition, followed by Paraná (13.8%) and Rio Grande do Sul (12.5%).

Acquisition of leather remains stable in relation to Q1 2021

The tanning houses reported to have received 7.12 million whole pieces of raw hide in the first quarter of 2022. That total represented stability in relation to the same quarter a year ago and a retraction of 1.4$ compared with the last period of 2021.

The comparison between the first quarters of 2021 and 2022 indicated a negative change of 959 pieces in the total purchased by the establishments. Tanning houses reported increases in ten out of 19 Federation Units surveyed.  The biggest rises occurred in Goiás (+73.77 thousand pieces), São Paulo (+44.72 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso do Sul (+27.64 thousand pieces), Mato Grosso (+20.42 thousand pieces) and Pará (+18.52 thousand pieces). Conversely, the most significant negative changes were recorded in Paraná (-102.94 thousand pieces) and Rio Grande do Sul (-29.02 thousand pieces).

Mato Grosso remained leading the ranking of Federation Units that receive rawhide pieces to be processed, with 15.7% of the national share, followed by Mato Grosso do Sul (13.9%) and São Paulo (10.9%).

Production of hen eggs was 997.20 million dozens

The production of hen eggs was of 997.20 million dozens in the first quarter of 2022. That amount was 2.0% lower than the estimate of the first quarter last year and 2.5% lower than that reported in the fourth quarter of 2021. Despite the retraction in the annual comparison, that was the second best result measured for a first quarter, considering the time series started in 1987.

The production of less 19.6 million dozens of eggs, at national level, over the first quarter of 2021 was influenced by drops reported in 15 out of 26 FUs. In terms of quantity, the most significant reductions occurred in São Paulo (-7.07 million dozens), Espírito Santo (-5.77 million dozens), Goiás (-3.84 million dozens), Rio Grande do Sul (-2.95 million dozens) and Amazonas (-2.46 million dozens). Among the increases, the highlights were Ceará (+2.80 million dozens) and Mato Grosso (+1.14 million dozens).

IBGE releases “Price of raw milk paid to producers” as experimental statistics

The IBGE also released today the price of raw milk paid to producers within the scope of the Quarterly Survey of Milk.  In the first quarter of 2022, the average price per liter reached R$2.14 at national level. In the equivalent quarter in 2019, it stayed at R$1.36. In 2020, it had been R$1.38 and, in 2021, R$1.90.

Since 2019, the survey questionnaire adopted a consultation to the enterprises about the average price paid, monthly, by the raw material acquired (raw milk, cooled or not).   Since the, the variable investigated was used only internally to provide material for collection and data editing of the Municipal Livestock Survey (PPM).  Click here to access the tables.
