Continuous PNAD: unemployment rate is 11.2% and underutilization rate is 23.5% in quarter ended February

The unemployment rate (11.2%) in the moving quarter December 2021-February 2022 decreased by 0.4 percentage points against the quarter September-November 2021 (11.6%) and 3.4 percentage points in relation to the same period a year ago. The unemployment rate unemployed population (12.0 million persons) fell 3.1% (389 thousand persons) against the previous quarter (12.4 million persons) and 19.5% (2.9 million unemployed persons) in relation to the same period last year (14.9 million persons).

The number of employed persons was estimated at nearly 95.2 million persons, with stability from the previous quarter and and increase of 9.1% (7.9 million persons) against the same period in 2021. Estimated at 55.2%, the employment-population ratio percentage of employed persons in the population at working age - was stable in comparison with the previous quarter and grew 4.1 percentage points (p.p.) against thesame quarter in the previous year (51.1%).

The compound underutilization rate (23.5%) fell 1.5 percentage points in relation to the quarter September-November (25%) and 5.7 percentage points in comparison with the quarter ended February 2021 (29.2%). The underutilized population (27.3 million persons) dropped 6.3% (by 1.8 million less persons) againt the previous quarter (29.1 million) and 17.8% (5.9 million) in the annual comparison (33.1 million).

The time-related underemployed population (6.6 million persons) decreased in relation to the previous quarter by -12.5% (944 thousand persons). In relation to the quarter ended February 2021, there was a decrease of 4.2% (294 thousand persons).

The population out of the workforce (65.3 million persons) grew 0.7% (by 481 thousand persons) from the previous quarter and recorded a decrease of 5.0% (3.4 million persons) in the annual comparison.

The discouraged population (4.7 million persons)remained stable from the previous quarter and dropped 20.2% (1.2 million persons) in the annual comparison. The percentage of discouraged persons in the workforce (4.2%) was stable against the previous quarter and recorded a decrease of -1.3 percentage points from the same quarter a year ago (5.5%).

The number ofworkers with a formal employment contract in the private sector (except domestic workers) was 34.6 million persons, having increased 1.1% (371 thousand persons against the previous quarter and 9.4% (an increase by 3 million persons) in the annual comparison.

The number of employed persons without a formal contract the private sector (12.3 million) remained stable in relation to the previous quarter and increased by 18.5% (1.9 million persons) in the year.

The number of self-employed workers (25.4 million persons) remained stable in relation to the previous quarter, (-1.9% or 488 thousand persons), but rose 8.6% (2 million persons more) in the year.

The number of domestic workers (5.7 million persons) remained stable compared with the previous quarter, but rose 20.8% (974 thousand persons) in the year.

The number of employers (4.1 million persons) rose 5.2% (203 thousand persons) against the previous quarter and 7.6% (287 thousand persons) in relation to the same quarter a year ago.

The number of persons employed in the public sector (11.3 million persons) remained stable in both comparisons.

The informality rate was 40.2% of the employed population, or 38.3 million informal workers. That rate had been 40.6% in the previous quarter and 39.1% in the same quarter of 2021.

The usual real earnings of R$ 2,511 in the quarter ended February, recorded stability against the quarter September-November 2021 and decreased by 8.8% against the same quarter a year ago. The real wage bill (R$ 234.1 billion) remained stable in both comparisons.

Estimated at 107.2 million persons in the moving quarter December 2021 -February 2022, workforce (employed and unemployed persons) remained stable in comparison with the quarter September-November 2021, recorded an increase of 4.9% (5 million persons against the same quarter last year.

Among the groups of activity, against the previous moving quarter, there was an increase in Other services (4.0% of 189 thousand persons) and a decrease in Construction (3.5%, by 261 thousand persons).

Against the quarter ended February 2021, increases were observed in: General industry (8.8%, or 995 thousand persons), Construction (13.1%, or 840 thousand persons), Trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (11.9%, or 2.0 million persons), Transportation, storage and mailing (8.0%, or 361 thousand persons), Lodging and feeding (25.6%, or 1.1 million persons), Information, Communication and Financial, Real Estate, Professional and Adminstrative Activities (5.7%, or 613 thousand persons), Other services (15.2%, or 652 thousand persons) and Domestic services (21.0%, or 992 thousand persons). The other groups did not record significant changes.

As for average usual real earnings, against the previous moving quarter, Construction recorded increase (6.0%, or R$ 114), Trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (2.8%, or R$ 57) and Domestic services (3.7%, or R$ 35).

In the comparison with the quarter December 2020-February 2021 there was no growth in any of the categories and there were decreases in: Industry (9.4%, or menos R$ 258), Trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (4.1%, or R$ 88) and Public administration, defense, social security, education, human health and social services (14.6%, or R$ 612).

Among the employment types, in comparison with the previous moving quarter, there was an increase in the category of Domestic worker (3.7% or R$ 35). The other groups did not record significant changes. In the annual comparison, no category recorded decrease.
