Among the major economic categories, in the comparison with the previous month, the production of durable consumer goods (-11.5%) and capital goods (-5.6%) had the sharpest negative rates in January of 2022, with the former eliminating the 9.6% advance accumulated in the last two months of 2021; and the latter reversing the expansion of 5.4 registered in the previous month.

The sectors of intermediate goods (-1.9%) and semi and non-durable consumer goods (-0.5%) also showed a reduction in this month, with the former eliminating the 1.5% growth seen in last two months of 2021; and the latter retreating again after growing 1.5% in December 2021, when it interrupted three consecutive months of production drops, a period in which it accumulated a loss of 1.5%.

Quarterly moving average stays at -0.1% in quarter ended in January

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the quarterly moving average for the whole industry changed 0.1% in the quarter ended in January 2022 against the previous month, when it grew 0.8% interrupting the downward trend started in January 2021.

Among the major economic categories, the sector of semi and non-durable consumer goods (0.3%) had the only positive result in this comparison, being slightly higher than the one verified in the previous month (0.1%).

On the other hand, the sectors of capital goods (-1.2%), durable consumer goods (-0.9%) and intermediate goods (-0.2%) had declines in January 2022, after having recorded growth in December 2021: 1.3%, 2.4% and 0.2%, respectively.

Compared to January 2021, all categories had negative results

Compared with January 2021, the industrial sector retreated 7.2%, with negative figures in all major economic categories and in 184 out of 26 sectors, 567 out of 79 groups and 67.0% of the 805 products surveyed. It is worth mentioning that January 2022 (21 days) had one more business day than the same month in the prior year (20).

Among the activities, the main negative influences came from motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (-23.5%), mining and quarrying (-6.7%), rubber and plastic products (-18.8%) and fabricated metal products (-20.8%).

Other important negative highlights were: furniture (-33.0%); textiles (-26.7%); leather, travel articles and footwear (-22.6%); manufacture of wearing apparel and accessories (-22.2%); and pharmaceuticals (-21.3%); electrical machines, appliances and material (-19.6%); beverages (-9.6%); basic metals (-6.8%); non-metallic mineral products (-6.2%) and other chemical products (-3.8%).

On the other hand, among the eight activities that expanded the output, the major influences on the industry average were registered by coke, petroleum products and biofuels (10.0%).

Among the major economic categories, the segment of durable consumer goods(-25.8%) registered the sharpest drop, in January 2022. But the sectors producing semi and non-durable consumer goods (-8.4%), capital goods (-8.1%) and intermediate goods (-5.0%) also showed negative results in this month, with the first two showing more intense declines than that of the industry average (-7.2%); and the last one with the most moderate reduction among the categories.

The sector of durable consumer goods (-25.8%) had the seventh consecutive negative result in the comparison with the same month of the previous year.  This month, the sector was pressed by the reduction in the manufacture of cars (-29.8%), brown goods (-28.1%) and white goods (-20.1%). In addition, the groups of other household appliances (-29.9%) and furniture (-41.6%) also had important declines.  On the other hand, the main positive impact came from the greater production of motorcycles (56.9%).

The sector of semi and non-durable consumer goods (-8.4%) decreased for the seventh consecutive month, having registered -7.5% in December, -6.4% in November, -10.1% in October, -5.6% in September, -1.1% in August and -1.9% in July.  The negative performance in January was explained, mainly, by the reduction in semi-durables (-24.3%), influenced, to a great extent, by the lower production of footwear and clothing, in addition to mattresses, plastic swimming pools, cell phones and thermoses.

However, the group of non-durables (-13.6%) also had a significant negative result, influenced, mainly, by the declines in the production of medicines, plastic articles for household use, lighters, disposable plastic articles and cigarettes, among others.  On the other hand, the group of fuels (12.1%) had the only positive result, driven by the greater production of motor gasoline.

The segment of intermediate goods (-5.0%) fell for the sixth consecutive month (-4.1% in December, -2.9% in November, -6.7% in October, -3.6% in September and -1.9% in August).  The drops in products associated with mining and quarrying industries (-6.7%), motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (-17.5%), of rubber and plastic products (-18.0%), of metal products (-18.1%), of metallurgy (-6.8%), of textiles (-26.0%), of non-metallic mineral products (-6.2%), other chemical products (-3.7%) and machinery and equipment (-2.1%) are quite responsible for the result of the category in January.

Still in this same economic category, it is also worth mentioning the negative results indicated by the groups of typical inputs for civil construction (-10.8%) and packaging (-14.8%).

On the other hand, positive pressures were registered by coke, petroleum products and biofuels (9.5%), food products (5.9%),  and pulp, paper and paper products (0.4%).

The production of capital goods (-8.1%) interrupted a sequence of sixteen consecutive months of positive rates in comparison with the same month of the previous year.  The segment was influenced in January 2022 by the reduction observed in the groups of capital goods for transportation equipment (-17.7%) and for industrial purposes (-12.5%).  Conversely, the positive impacts were registered by the groups of capital goods for miscellaneous purposes (9.1%), for electricity (15.2%), for agricultural purposes (8.8%) and for construction (4.6%).
