In November, industry retreats in eight of 15 places surveyed

With the negative change of 0.2% in the national industry in November, eight out of 15 areas surveyed by the IBGE recorded negative rates in the seasonally-adjusted series.

The steepest losses were registered in Amazonas (-3.5%), Ceará (-2.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.2%), followed by the Northeast (-1.8%), Bahia (-1.7%), Espírito Santo (-0.9%), Paraná (-0.7%) and Pernambuco (-0.3%). The highest rises were recorded in Mato Grosso (14.6%), Santa Catarina (5.0%) and Pará (3.5%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul (1.2%), São Paulo (1.0%), Minas Gerais (0.8%) and Goiás (0.1%).

The quarterly moving average remained negative in ten out of 15 areas, led by Amazonas (-2.5%), Minas Gerais (-1.4%), Ceará (-1.2%), São Paulo (-0.9%), Goiás (-0.8%) and Santa Catarina (-0.6%).

The cumulative index in the year grew in nine out of 15 areas, highlighted by Santa Catarina (12.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (11.2%), Minas Gerais (10.9%) and Paraná (10.0%). The cumulative rate over the last 12 months advanced in ten out of 15 areas surveyed.

In the retreat of 0.2% in the industrial activity in November, eight out of 15 areas surveyed recorded negative changes in the seasonally-adjusted series,  Amazonas (-3.5%), Ceará (-2.5%) and Rio de Janeiro (-2.2%) registered the sharpest drops. Amazonas and Ceará retreated once again, after recording positive rates in October 2021 (0.1% and 2.7%, respectively); and Rio de Janeiro offset the cumulative advance of 1.5% in the August-October 2021 period. The Northeast Region (-1.8%), Bahia (-1.7%), Espírito Santo (-0.9%), Paraná (-0.7%) and Pernambuco (-0.3%) were the other places with negative figures in November.

On the other hand, Mato Grosso (14.6%), Santa Catarina (5.0%) and Pará (3.5%) reported the highest rises. Mato Grosso stepped up its growth in October (3.4%), when it interrupted four consecutive months of drops in the output, a period in which it accumulated a reduction of 7.0%. Santa Catarina and Pará, respectively, offset part of the cumulative losses of 6.3% and 4.7% in the September-October 2021 period. Rio Grande do Sul (1.2%), São Paulo (1.0%), Minas Gerais (0.8%) and Goiás (0.1%) registered the other positive rates.

The quarterly moving average index for the  overall industry dropped 0.5% in the quarter ended in November against the previous month and has remained on a downward trend since January 2021. Ten out of 15 places surveyed recorded negative rates, highlighted by the he steeper retreats reported by Amazonas (-2.5%), Minas Gerais (-1.4%), Ceará (-1.2%), São Paulo (-0.9%), Goiás (-0.8%) and Santa Catarina (-0.6%). In contrast, Mato Grosso (4.3%), the Northeast Region (2.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (1.7%), Pernambuco (1.6%) and Bahia (1.2%) recorded the advances in November 2021.

Compared with the November 2020, the national industry fell by 4.4% in November 2021, with ten out of 15 areas surveyed reporting negative rates. It is worth mentioning that November 2021 had the same number of business days as the same month a year ago (20). Bahia (-15.7%), Amazonas (-13.0%), Ceará (-11.1%) and the Northeast Region (-10.5%) registered the most intense two-digit retreats.

Bahia was pressed by the negative behavior in the sectors of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies, basic metals and pulp, paper and paper products. Amazonas was pressed by the activities of beverages, computer equipment, electronic and optical products; Ceará, by the drop in the production of leather, traveling goods and footwear and wearing apparel and accessories; and the Northeast Region, by the retreat in motor vehicles, trailers and bodies and leather, traveling goods and footwear.

São Paulo (-6.9%) and Pernambuco (-5.9%) also recorded more intense negative rates than the national average (-4.4%), whereas Goiás (-3.9%), Santa Catarina (-2.6%), Paraná (-1.9%) and Minas Gerais (-0.6%) were the other places with negative indexes.

Having expanded 28.0%, Mato Grosso registered the highest growth in November 2021, leveraged, to a great extent, by the advance reported in the activity of food products. Espírito Santo (4.7%), Rio de Janeiro (4.6%), Pará (2.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (1.4%) recorded the other positive rates this month.

In the cumulative index in the year, against the same period in the previous year, the expansion noticed in the national output reached nine out of 15 places surveyed, highlighted by Santa Catarina (12.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (11.2%), Minas Gerais (10.9%) and Paraná (10.0%). Santa Catarina was leveraged by the advances in the sectors of wearing apparel and accessories, basic metals,  machinery and equipment and motor vehicles, trailers and bodies.

In Rio Grande do Sul, the highlights were the sectors of  machinery and equipment, fabricated metal products, leather, traveling goods and footwear and  other chemicals. Minas Gerais received the positive impact from the sectors of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies, basic metals and mining and quarrying industries. While the industry in Paraná was leveraged by the sectors of  machinery and equipment and motor vehicles, trailers and bodies.

Espírito Santo (9.1%), Amazonas (6.8%), Ceará (6.5%) and São Paulo (6.2%) also registered higher positive rates than the national average (4.7%), whereas Rio de Janeiro (3.8%) was the other place that reported an advance in the output in the cumulative index in the year.

On the other hand, Bahia (-13.4%) recorded the highest retreat in the cumulative index in the year, mainly pressed by the negative behavior of the activities of motor vehicles, trailers and bodies and coke, petroleum products and biofuels. The Northeast Region (-5.8%), Goiás (-4.6%), Pará (-3.2%) and Mato Grosso (-3.0%) also recorded negative rates in the cumulative indicator in the January-November 2021 period, whereas Pernambuco (0.0%) reported a null change.

Having increased 5.0% in November 2021, the cumulative index in the last 12 months maintained the low pace of growth against that reported in the months of October (5.7%), September (6.5%) and August (7.2%). Ten out of 15 places surveyed rose, though ten of them pointed out a lower dynamism than in October. Amazonas (from 9.4% to 7.0%), Ceará (from 9.4% to 7.5%), Pernambuco (from 2.3% to 0.7%), Paraná (from 12.1% to 10.6%), Bahia (from -10.8% to -12.3%), Santa Catarina (from 14.2% to 12.8%), the Northeast Region (from -3.5% to -4.9%) and São Paulo (from 7.6% to 6.6%) registered the major losses, whereas the gains were reported in Mato Grosso (from -6.4% to -2.8%), Rio de Janeiro (from 2.0% to 3.2%), Espírito Santo (from 7.9% to 8.7%) and Pará (from -3.2% to -2.7%).
