In October 2021, the volume of services in Brazil fell by 1.2% compared to September, in the seasonally adjusted series, accumulating a decrease of 1.9% in the last two months. This loss does not eliminate the gain from the April-August 2021 period (6.2%), but it does reduce the distance from the pre-pandemic level. In October, the services sector was 2.1% above the level of February 2020.

In the cumulative result for the year, the volume of services increased by 11.0% compared to the same period in 2020. The cumulative index in the last twelve months changed from 6.8% in September to 8.2% in October 2021, maintaining the upward trend started in February 2021 (-8.6%) and reaching the highest rate in the time series, started in December 2012.

The decrease of 1.2% in the volume of services from September to October was widespread by four of the five activities investigated, with a highlight to information and communication services (-1.6%) and other services (-6.7%). The other declines came from professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.8%) and transportation (-0.3%). Among the sectors, transportation, support services to transportation and mailing (9.9%) and information and communication services (6.5%) exerted the main positive contributions on the volume of services, driven by the revenue increase in road freight transportation companies; air transportation of passengers; management of ports and terminals; road collective transportation of passengers; and maritime and port support navigation, in the first sector; and from portals, content providers and Internet search engines; other telecommunications activities; data processing, application service providers and internet hosting services; information technology advisory; custom software development; and open TV activities, in the latter.

The other advances came from services rendered to families (26.4%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (4.7%), which presented increases in revenue from hotels; restaurants; and catering services, in the first branch; and in engineering services; organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses and conventions; general cleaning; technical activities related to architecture and engineering; legal activities; car rental; and rental of machinery and equipment, in the latter.

On the other hand, the only negative rate compared to October 2020 came from the sector of other services (-6.1%), pressured, above all, by the lower revenue earned by insurance, supplementary pension and health insurance brokers and agents; of post-harvest activities; and repair and maintenance of computers and peripheral equipment.

In the cumulative result for the year, the services sector grew by 11.0%, with increases in all five activities and in almost three quarters (73.5%) of the 166 types of services investigated.
