Services sector retreats 0.6% in September

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the services sector in Brazil dropped 0.6% in September 2021 over August. In the seasonally-unadjusted series, volume of services advanced 11.4% in relation to the same month in 2020, hitting its seventh positive rate in a row. The cumulative index in the year changed 11.4%. The cumulative index in 12 months reached 6.8%, the highest rate in the time series started in December 2012.

The decrease of 0.6% in volume of sales, from August to September, was observed in four of the five activities surveyed, with a highlight to transportation (-1.9%), which recorded the most significant negativ result since April 2020 (-19.0%). The main decreases came from other services (-4.7%), information and communication (-0.9%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.1%). The only positive result was that of services rendered to families (1.3%), sixth increase in a row, in a period with a cumulative 52.5% of increase.
The quarterly moving average for the volume of services recorded a positive change of 0.3% in the quarter ended September 2021 from the previous quarter, thus keeping the predominatly upward trend since july last year. Only one of the five activities recorded a positive results in the month: services rendered to families (2.4%). On the other hand, the three sectors recorded negative rates: other services (-1.2%), transportation (-0.6%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.5%). In turn, information and communication (0.0%) leveled off in September.
Against September 2020, volume of services, having increased 11.4% in September 2021, recorded its seventh positive rate in a row. The month’s result was marked by increases in four of the five dissemination activities and the increase in 74.7% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, transportation, services, support services for transportation and mailing (13.7%) and information and communication services (10.1%) accounted for the main positive contributions on the total volume of services.

The other advances came from professional, administrative and complementary services (9.6%) and services rendered to families (32.2%). On the other hand, the only negative rate was that of other services (-1.5%), mainly due to to lower revenue from companies in the segment of fund administration by contract or commission.
In terms of the cumulative index in the year, against the same period a year ago, the sector of services recorded an increase of 11.4%, with positive rates in all the a five activities surveyed and increase in 71.7% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, the most significant positive contributions were those of transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (15.9%) and information and communication (9.5%), mainly due to the increase of revenue of companies working in the segments of road transportation of cargo; management of ports and terminals; air transportation of passengers; maritime and port support airport navigation and mainling, in the former. In the latter, portals, internet providers and other information serivces on the Internet; developing and licensing of softwares; other telecommunication activities and; broadcat television activities stood out.
Other advances came from professional, administrative and complementary services (7.8%), services rendered to families (16.4%) and other services (8.6%), due to the increase in revenue of engineering service companies; legal activities; technical activities related to agriculture and engineering. car rental; rental of temporary workforce; and rental of machinery and equipment, in the first segment; in hotels, restaurants, catering services and burial activities, in the second; and security brokers; recovery of plastic material; administration of funds by contract or commission; consulting in financial investment, and support activities to forestry, in the last segment.
Services fell in 20 of the 27 Federation Units in September
There was decline in volume of services in 20 of the 27 Federation Units from August, similarly to what was observed in terms of reduction (0.6%) in Brazil. Among the areas with negative rates in the month, the main negative impact came from São Paulo (-1.6%), followed by Minas Gerais (-1.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.3%), Pernambuco (-2.2%) and Goiás (-2.2%). On the other hand, Rio. de Janeiro (2.0%), followed by the Federal District (2.9%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (36%) recorded the main increases in regional terms.
Against September 2020, , the advance of services in Brazil (11.4%) was observed in 25 of the 27 Federation Units. The main positive contributions came from São Paulo (10.2%), Rio de Janeiro (12.2%), Minas Gerais (11.8%), Rio Grande do Sul (18.8%), Paraná (11.4%) and Bahia (19.7%). The two decreases took place in Piauí (-1.9%) and Rondônia (-2.3%).
In terms of the cumulative index in the year, against the same period in 2020, the increase of volume of services in Brazil (11.4% was widespread, since all the 27 Federation Units recorded increase in revenue of services. São Paulo accounted for the main positive impact (11.6%), in regional terms, followed by Minas Gerais (16.0%), Rio de Janeiro (8.,2%), Rio Grande do Sul (12.3%) and Santa Catarina (16.6%).
Index of tourism activities increases by 0.8% in September
In September 2021, the index of tourism activities increased by 0.8% from August, fifth positive rate in a row, with a cumulative increase of 49.9%. However, the tourism segment is still 20.4% below the level of February last year.
Seven of the 12 areas surveyed recorded increases in national tourism activity (0.8%). Rio de Janeiro accounted for the most significant positive contribution (4.0%), followed by Santa Catarina (5.7%), Bahia (1.5%) and Goiás (2.5%). On the other hand, São Paulo (-1.7%) and Ceará (-5.2%) recorded the main negative results in the month.
Against September 2020, the index of tourism volume activities in Brazil increased 36.6%, sixth positive rate in a row, mainly due, probably, to the increase of revenue of companies in the segments of hotels; air transportation; restaurants; collective road transportation of passengers; catering services. and travel agencies.
The 12 Federation Units where the indicator is investigated recorded increases in terms of tourism services, with a highlight to São Paulo (23.1%), followed by Bahia (104.7%), Rio de Janeiro (28.0%), Minas Gerais (50.9%), Pernambuco (86.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (65.1%).
Considering the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities recorded an increase of 19.9% against the same period last year, mainly due to increases in the revenue of companies that belong to the air transportation segment; hotels. restaurants; car rental and collective road transportation of passengers.
All the 12 areas surveyed also recorded positive rates, among which the following ones stood out: São Paulo (7.0%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (16.0%), Bahia (48.9%), Minas Gerais (26.2%) and Pernambuco (45.6%).
