In August 2021, volume of services increased by 0.5% from July, in the seasonally adjusted series, with a  cumulative increase of 6.5% in th last five months. So, the sector of services is 4.6% above the February 2020 figure (before the pandemic) and has reached the highest level since November 2015.

In the seasonally adjusted series, against August 2020, volume of services recorded the sixth positive rate in a row: 16.7% in August 2021.

In terms of the cumulative index in the year up to August, volume of services increased by 11.5% against he same period in 2020. The cumulative index in 12 months (5.1%) has been on an upward trend since February 2021 (-8.6%) and reached its peak in the time series which started in December 2012.

The increase in volume of services (0.5%), which was registered from July to August 2021, was also observed in four of the five activities surveyed, with a highliht to information and communication (1.2%), transportation (1.1%) and services rendered to enterprises (4.1%). The expansion of the first two sectors took place after both recorded slight negative changes in July. Services rendered to enterprises had a cumulative increase of 50.5% in the period April-August. With the lowest impct on the global index, other services (1.5%) made up fot the slight decrease in the previous month (-0.2%).

The only negative result was that of professional, administrative and complementary services (-0.4%), making up for part of the increase (4.1%) observed between last May and July.

The quarterly moving average reached 1.1% in the quarter ended in August, against the same level in the previous month, and has been on an upward trend since July 2020. All the five activities recorded positive results in the month: services rendered to families (4.9%), other services (1.2%), information and communication (1.1%), transportation (0.8%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.6%).

Against August 2020, , the services sector grew by 16.7% in August 2021, its sixth positive rate in a row. All the five activities recorded increases and 80.7% of the 166 types of services investigated.

Among the sectors, that of transportation, support services for transportation and mailing (19.6%) accounted for the main positive contribution, due, to a great extent, to the increased revenue of enterprises in the segments of road transportation of cargo, air transportation of passengers, port and terminal management, road transportation of passengers, maritime and port support; and shipping agency activities.

The second main impact came from information and communication services (13.6%), with a highlight to portals, content providers and Internet search engines; software development and licensing; other telecommunications activities; broadcast TV activities; data processing, application services providers; Internet hosting services and consulting in information technology.

It was followed by the sector of professional, administrative and complementary services (12.7%), mainly organization, promotion and management of fairs; congresses and conventions; general cleaning; engineering services; legal activities; hiring of temporary workforce and solutions in electronic payment.

Other segments also recorded increases: services rendered to families (42.2%) - among which stand out: hotels; restaurants; and catering and other services (11.7%) – with an increase of revenue in administration of funds by contract or commission; security brokers; consulting in financial investments; and recovery of plastic material.

Against the same period in 2020, the cumulative index in the year increased by 11.5%, with positive rates in all the five activities and increases in more than half 69.9% of the 166 types of services surveyed.

Among the sectors, the main positive contriutions were those of transportation, support services for transportation, and mailing (16.2%) - due, to a great extent, to the increase in revenue of companies of the following segments: road transportation of cargo; port and terminal management; air transportation of passengers; shipping agency support; airport operation; in the former - and information and communication - (9.4%), with a highlight to portals, content providers and Internet search engines; software development and licensing; other telecommunications activities; and roadcast television activities.

Other increases came from professional, administrative and complementary services (7.5%) – due gineering services; legal activities; technical activities related to architecture and engineeringcar rental; hiring of temporary workforce; and charging activities and cadastral information - esides the sector of services rendered to families (14.4%) – with a focus on hotels; restaurants; catering activities and burial activities and, finally, the sector of other services (10.0%), with a highlight to administration of funds by contract or commission; security brokers; recovery of plastic material; administration of over the counter markets; support activities to forestry production; and consulting in financial investments.

Services grew in 16 of 27 Federation Units in August

Sixteen of the 27 Federation Units recorded increases in volume of services in August, in the seasonally adjusted series. The most important positive impact came from São Paulo (0.5%), followed y Rio Grande do Sul (4.2%), Paraná (1.0%) and Bahia (1.7%). On the other hand, the main drops were recorded by Mato Grosso (-3.6%), Federal District (-2.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.4%).

Against August 2020, the increase of volume of services in Brazil (16.7%) was observed in all the 27 Federation Units. The major positive contribution came from São Paulo (17.7%), followed by Minas Gerais (19.7%), Rio Grande do Sul (26.8%) Rio de Janeiro (8.2%), Paraná (16.1%) and Bahia (26.8%)

In terms of the cumulative index in 2021, against the same period in 2020, the increase of volume of services in Brazil (11.5%) was observed in all the 27 Federation Units. The major positive impact was registered in São Paulo (11.8%), followed by Minas Gerais (16.7%), Rio de Janeiro (7.7%), Santa Catarina (17.2%) and Rio Grande do Sul (11.5%).

Index of tourism activities increases by 4.6%

In August 2021, the index of tourism activities rose 4.6% against July, fourth positive rate in a row a period in which it had a cumulative increase of 49.1%. However, the segment of tourism activities is still 20.8% below the level in February 2020.

Eight of the 12 areas surveyed also recorded increases in terms of tourism activities. The main positive contribution came from São Paulo (4.9%), followed by Minas Gerais (4.7%), Goiás (8.8%) and Paraná (5.4%). Rio de Janeiro (-1.1%) recorded the most significant negative result.

Against August 2020 , the index of tourism activity in Brazil rose 53.8%, fifth positive rate in a row, mainly due to the increase in the revenue of air transportation; hotels and restaurants; road transportation of passengers; catering services; travel agencies and car rental.

All the 12 Federation Units in which the indicator is measured registered an advance in tourism services, with a highlight to São Paulo (38.8%), followed by Minas Gerais (66.6%), Bahia (151.2%), Rio de Janeiro (29.7%) and Pernambuco (118.8%).

In the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate for tourism activities rose 17.7% against the same period last year, mainly due to the increase of revenue of enterprises in the sectors of air transportation; hotels and restaurants; and car rental.

All the 12 areas surveyed recorded increases. with a highlight to Rio de Janeiro (14.4%), Bahia (42.9%), São Paulo (5.0%), Minas Gerais (22.9) and Pernambuco (40.9%).
