In August, industry shrinks in 7 of 15 the areas surveyed

With the decrease of 0.7% in national industry from July to August 2021, in the seasonally adjusted series, seven of the 15 areas surveyed by the IBGE recorded negative rates, with a highlight to the two-digit loss in Pernambuco (-12.0%) and the increases above the national average in Espírito Santo (-3.7%), Northeast Region (-3.5%), Mato Grosso (-2.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.0%) and Minas Gerais (-0.9%).

On the other hand, Amazonas (7.3%) and Pará (7.1%) accounted for the main increases.

Against August 2020, nine of the 15 areas surveyed recorded negative rates. Conversely, considering the quarterly moving average, there were decreases in 12 of the 15 places surveyed.

The cumulative was positive in ten of the 15 areas surveyed, with a highlight to Santa Catarina (20.5%), Amazonas (17.1%) and Ceará (16.3%). In terms of the cumulative index in the last 12 months, 11 of the 15 areas recorded positive rates.

In the seasonally adjusted series, seven of the 15 areas surveyed recorded negative rates, with a highlight to the two-digit decrease recorded by Pernambuco (-12.0%), which made up for the increase of 6.1% observed in the previous month. Espírito Santo (-3.7%), Northeast Region (-3.5%), Mato Grosso (-2.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.0%) and Minas Gerais (-0.9%) recorded decreases below the national average (-0.7%), whereas Goiás (-0.3%) completed the group of areas with negative results in August 2021.

Amazonas (7.3%) and Pará (7.1%), nevertheless, recorded the biggest decreases in the month; the former made up for part of the decrease observed in July (-13.2%) and the latter interrupted the sequence of three months with decrease in production, a period when there was a cumulative loss of 9.7%. Santa Catarina (1.9%), Paraná (1.5%), Rio de Janeiro (1.3%), São Paulo (0.4%) and Bahia (0.3%) were responsible for the other positive results, whereas Ceará, with null change (0.0%), repeated the level reached in July.

The quarterly moving average was of -0.8% in the quarter ended in August 2021 against the level in the previous month. In 12 of the 15 areas surveyed, there were negative quarterly moving averages and the most significant decreases were recorded by Pernambuco (-3.7%), Minas Gerais (-1.6%), Mato Grosso (-1.5%), Rio Grande do Sul (-1.3%) and São Paulo (-1.1%). On the other hand, Bahia (6.2%) and Ceará (1.7%) advanced in August 2021.

In comparison with August 2020, national industry dropped 0.7% in August 2021, with negative rates in nine of the 15 areas surveyed. Northeast Region (-17.2%), Bahia (-13.8%) and Pernambuco (-13.5%) accounted for the main decreases. Pará (-6.2%), Ceará (-5.6%), Goiás (-3.4%), Mato Grosso (-2.1%), Amazonas (-1.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-1.5%) complete the group of areas with negative results in the month.

On the other hand, Paraná (8.7%) and Minas Gerais (6.5%) registered the biggest increases. Espírito Santo (6.0%), Santa Catarina (5.8%), Rio de Janeiro (1.4%) and São Paulo (0.9%) also recorded positive rates in the month. It is worth mentioning that August 2021 had 22 business days, one day more than in August (21 days).

The cumulative indicator in the year, against the same period in 2020, showed output increases in 10 of the 15 areas surveyed, among which stand out: Santa Catarina (20.5%), Amazonas (17.1%) and Ceará (16.3%). Minas Gerais (15.6%), Paraná (15.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (15.0%), São Paulo (12.6%) and Espírito Santo (10.3%) also recorded positive rates above the national average (9.2%), whereas Pernambuco (4.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (3.5%) complete the group of areas with advance in production.

On the other hand, Bahia (-14.8%) represented the most significant decrease in the cumulative index in the first eight months in the year. Mato Grosso (-4.7%), Goiás (-3.8%), Northeast Region (-3.7%) and Pará (-1.4%) also recorded negative rates in this indicator.

The cumulative index in 12 months, having advanced 7.2% in August 2021, intensified the increase of last July (7.0%) and has been on an upward trend since August 2020 (-5.7%).

In regional terms, 11 of the 15 areas surveyed recorded positive rates in August 2021 and six of them exceeded the indexes of last July. Espírito Santo (from 2.6% to 4.6%), Paraná (from 11.5% to 13.2%), São Paulo (from 9.2% to 9.9%), Mato Grosso (from -7.0% to -6,3%), Santa Catarina (from 16.3% to 16.9%) and Minas Gerais (from 11.7% to 12.3%) recorded the main increases between July and August 2021, whereas Pernambuco (from 7.8% to 5.7%), Northeast Region (from 0.6% to -1.3%), Ceará (from 14.6% to 13.4%), Goiás (from -2.4% to -3.2%), Bahia (from -9.3% to -10.1%) and Pará (from 0.7% to 0.1%) recorded the most significant decreases between the two periods.
