With a decrease of 1.3% in national industry, from March to April 2021, in the seasonally adjusted series, 9 of the 15 areas surveyed by the IBGE recorded negative rates. Bahia (-12.4%) and Northeast Region (-7.8%) registered the most significant decreases.

Amazonas (1.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.5%) recorded the main advances.

Against April 2020, 12 of the 15 areas surveyed had positive results.

The quarterly moving average decreased in 11 of the 15 areas surveyed, mainly in Bahia (-8.8%) and Ceará (-8.2%).

The cumulative index in the year was positive in 10 of the 15 areas surveyed, with a highlight to Santa Catarina (24.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (20.5%). In terms of the cumulative index in 12 months, eight of the 15 areas surveyed recorded positive rates.

In the seasonally adjusted series, nine of the 15 areas surveyed recorded negative results. Bahia (-12.4%) and Northeast Region (-7.8%) recorded the most significant decreases. Both recorded their fifth negative results, with cumulative losses of 31.8% and 17.1%, respectively.

Goiás (-3.6%), São Paulo (-3.3%), Pernambuco (-2.4%) and Santa Catarina (-2.0%) also fell below the national average (-1.3%). Ceará (-1.2%), Mato Grosso (-1.1%) and Minas Gerais (-0.9%) complete the group of areas with negative rates in April.

On the other hand, Amazonas (1.9%) and Rio de Janeiro (1.5%) accounted for the main increases in the month. The former had its second positive rate in a row and a cumulative increase of 11.0% in the period; the latter eliminated part of the 5% loss observed in the previous month. Espírito Santo (0.9%), Pará (0.3%), Rio Grande do Sul (0.3%) and Paraná (0.2%) accounted for the other positive results in April 2021. /p>

The quarterly moving average recorded a decrease of 1.5% in the quarter ended April 2021 against the previous month, with a steeper decrease in comparison with last March (-1%).

Eleven of the 15 areas surveyed recorded negative rates, with a highlight to significant decreases in Bahia (-8.9%), Ceará (-8.2%), Northeast Region (-4.6%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.1%), Pernambuco (-2.3%), Santa Catarina (-1.7%) and Pará (-1.6%). Amazonas (3.3%) and Mato Grosso (2.2%) accounted for the main increases in April 2021.

From April 2020, there was an increase of 34.7% in April 2021, with positive results in 12 of the 15 areas surveyed. Both months had the same number of working days (20). Positive results were influenced by the low basis for comparison, since industry was affected, in April 2020, by social distancing measures adopted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Amazonas (132.8%) and Ceará (90.2%) recorded the main increases. Paraná (55.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (53.8%), Santa Catarina (50.5%) and São Paulo (45.5%) also had rates above the average of industry (34.7%), whereas Minas Gerais (32.5%), Pernambuco (31.4%), Espírito Santo (26.1%), Northeast Region (20.2%), Rio de Janeiro (10.3%) and Pará (6.0%) are other areas with positive results in April 2021.

On the other hand, Bahia (-10.0%) and Goiás (-8.7%) recorded the main increases in April 2021. Mato Grosso, down 2.0%, also registered a negative rate.

The cumulative index in 2021 (January-April), against the same period a year ago, reflects expansion of national industrial production in 10 of the 15 areas surveyed, with a highlight to Santa Catarina (24.4%) and Rio Grande do Sul (20.5%). Paraná (18.1%), Ceará (17.7%), Amazonas (17.2%), São Paulo (16.4%) and Minas Gerais (14.4%) also recorded positive rates above the national average (10.5%). Pernambuco (9.4%), Pará (3.8%) and Espírito Santo (1.7%) also registered increase in production in terms of the cumulative result in 2021.

Bahia (-16.3%) had the most significant decrease in the year. Goiás (-6.4%), Mato Grosso (-6.3%), Northeast Region (-1.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (-1.3%) also recorded negative rates in the cumulative indicator in the period January-April 2021.

In the four-month comparison, the first period in 2021, with an advance of 10.5%, had intensified increase versus the last four months of 2020 (3.5%) and interrupted the negative behavior observed since the last four months of 2018 (-1.6%) – all comparisons against the same period in the previous year.

The increased intensity of industrial production, from the third four-month period in 2020 (3.5%) to the first four-month period in 2021 (10.5%) was also observed in 12 of the 15 areas surveyed, with a highlight to Santa Catarina (from 10.6% to 24.4%), Rio Grande do Sul (from 9.0% to 20.5%), São Paulo (from 5.1% to 16.4%), Ceará (from 9.1% to 17.7%), Paraná (from 9.6% to 18.1%), Minas Gerais (from 6.3% to 14.4%), Amazonas (from 10.0% to 17.2%) and Espírito Santo (from -5.0% to 1.7%).

On the other hand, Bahia (from -1.7% to -16.3%), Goiás (from -2.1% to -6.4%) and Northeast Region (from 2.8% to -1.4%) registered decreases between the two periods.

The cumulative index in 12 months, having increased by 1.1% in April 2021, interrupted a series of 22 months with negative rates in a row and has remained on a predominantly upward trend since August 2020 (-5.7%).

Eight of the 15 areas surveyed had positive rates in April 2021 and in 3 of them the result of April exceeded that of last March. Amazonas (from -5.2% to 4.4%), Ceará (from -4.4% to 3.0%), Rio de Grande do Sul (from -1.7% to 4.7%), Santa Catarina (from 0.9% to 6.6%), Paraná (from -1.0% to 4.7%), São Paulo (from -3.5% to 1.8%), Pernambuco (from 3.4% to 7.4%) and Minas Gerais (from 0.7% to 4.6%) accounted for the main increases between march and April, whereas Pará (from 0.9% to -0.4%) and Goiás (from 0.8% to 0.3%) decreased.
