Volume of services decreases by 4.0% in March

In March 2021, volume of services decreased by 4.0% from the previous month, in the seasonally adjusted series. In the non-adjusted series, versus the same month in 2020, there was a 4.5% increase, after negative rates for 12 consecutive months.

In terms of cumulative index in the year, volume of services decreased by 0.8% from the same period in 2020, fifth decrease in a row in the quarterly comparison. The cumulative rate in 12 months, with a change from -8.6% in February to -0.8% in March 2021, interrupted the downward trend observed since January last year (1.0%).
From February to March, three of the five activities surveyed recorded decrease in volume of services (4.0%), among which services rendered to families (-27.0%) stood out, with its biggest decrease since April 2021 (-45.6%). Other negative results came from transportation, support services for transportation nas mailing (-1.9%) and from professional, administrative and complementary services (-1.4%), with the former returning part of the cumulative increase of 7.4% relative to the first two months of 2021; and the latter eliminating the small increase (9.6%) recorded between October 2020 and last February.
On the other hard, the only increases in the month were those of Information and communication (1.9%) and other services (3.7%), since both recorded the second positive rates in March and had cumulative increases of 2.0% nas 7.1%, respectively.
The quarterly moving average recorded a positive change of 0.3% in the quarter ended March 2021 in comparison with the previous month, and has been in an upward trend since July 2020. Three of the four activities recorded positive results in the month: transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (1.8%), professional, administrative and complementary services (1.3%) and information and communication (0.4%).
Services rendered to families (-7.5%) recorded the most significant decreases for this indicator, whereas other services (-0.6%) recorded moderate changes.
From March 2020, volume of services increased 4.5% in March 2021, after a series of twelve negative rates.This month's result shows expansion in four of the five activities and in 45.2% of the 166 types of services investigated.
Among the sectors, transportation, support services for transportatiom and mailing (8.8%) and information and communication services (6.2%) accounted for the main contributions to the overall volume of services.
With lower impacts on the general index, other services (7.3%) and professional, administrative and complementary services (0.7%) recorded increments in segments of recovery pf plastic material; security brokers; administration of stock markets and over the counter markets; administration of funds by contract or commission; and support activities to forestry production, in the former sector, and of technical activities related to architecture and engineering; engineering services. legal activities; call centers; car rental, in the latter.
On the other hand, the only negative contribution in the month was that from services rendered to families (-17.1%), mainly due to decrease in companies that work in the segments of restaurants, hotels, catering services and physical conditioning activities.

In terms of cumulative figures in the year, against the same period in 2020, services sector decreased by 0.8%, with decline in two of the five activities and in 39.2% of the 166 types of services.
Among the sectors, services rendered to families (-25.4%) accounted for the main negative contribution, due to the decrease in revenue of restaurants; hotels; catering and related services of ready-to-eat food; and physical conditioning activities. The other negative contribution was that of professional, administrative and complementary services (-3.1%), mainly due to the reduced revenue of travel agencies; administration of loyalty programs; solutions in electronic payment; organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses and conventions; cleaning of buildings; and private security and surveillance.
On the other hand, information and communication (3.5%), transportation, support activities for transportation and mailing (1.7%), and other services (1;9%) accounted for the main positive contributions to the cumulative index in the year.
Services fell in 14 of the 27 Federation areas in March
Fourteen of the 27 Federation Units recorded a decrease in volume of services in March 2021 from the previous month, as Brazil (-4.0%) in the seasonally adjusted series.
Among the areas with negative was was São Paulo (-2.6%), followed by the Federal District (-6.1%), Minas Gerais (-1.6%), Santa Catarina (-3.4%) and Rio de Janeiro (-0.8%). Mato Grosso do Sul (11.8%) recorded the biggest increase.
From March 2020, increase of volume of services in Brazil (4.5%) was observed in 19 of the 27 Federation Units. The main positive influence was that of São Paulo (4.4%), followed by por Minas Gerais (10.7%), Mato Grosso (38.1%) and Santa Catarina (13.2%). On the other hand, Federal District (-4.9%) recorded the main negative result.
In terms of the cumulative index in 2021, versus the same period in the previous year, the decrease in volume of services in Brazil (-0.8%) was balanced in the areas surveyed, since 14 of the 27 Federation Units also recorded a decrease in the real revenue from services.
Rio de Janeiro (-3.0%) recorded the main negative impact in regional terms, followed by Bahia (-9.8%), Paraná (-4.4%), São Paulo (-0.5%), Federal District (-7.5%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-4.9%). On the other, Minas Gerais (6.3%), Santa Catarina (9.4%) and Mato Grosso (10.3%) accounted for the main positive contributions to the national index.
Index of tourism activities recored a decrease of 22.0% in March
In March 2021, the index of regional tourism activities recorded a decrease of 22.0% from the previous month, the most significant decrease since April 2020 (-54.5%). The tourism segment had been recovering between May 2020 and February 2021, with an increase of 127.2%, but fell once more, in a way that it is still 78.7% behind the level of February last year.
All the 12 areas surveyed recorded decreases such as tourism national activity (-22.0%). The most significant negative contribution came from São Paulo (-21.5%), followed Rio de Janeiro (-17.2%), Paraná (-26.5%), Minas Gerais (-17.4%), Santa Catarina (-26.2%) and Pernambuco (-24.9%).
From March 2020, the volume of tourism index activities in Brazil fell 19.1%, thirteenth negative result in a row. All the 12 Federation Units t to the negative results of São Paulo (-27.7%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul (-33.2%), Paraná (-24.3%) and Rio de Janeiro (-8.2%).
In the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate for tourism activities fell 27.4% against the same period in 2020, mainly due to the decreases in revenue of companies in the following segments: restaurants; air transportation of passengers; hotels; travel agencies; collective road transportation of passengers and catering services. All the 12 areas surveyed also recorded negative rates, with a highlight to São Paulo (-35.6%) and Rio de Janeiro (-23.8%), followed by Minas Gerais (-25.8%), Paraná (-28.1%), Rio Grande do Sul (-30.2%) and Bahia (-18.8%).
