Services volume up 3.7% in February

In February 2021, services volume in Brazil increased by 3.7% from January (seasonally-adjusted series), and recorded its ninth positive rate in a row. In the non-adjusted series, against february 2020, the sector recorded a 2.0% decrease, twelfth negative rate in a row. Cumulative index in 12 months (-8.6%) has been on a downward trend since January 2020 (1.0%) and had the main negative result in the time series that started in December 2012.

With a 3.7% increase from January to February 2021,its ninth positive rate in a row, services sector had a cumulative increase of 24.0% in nine months, surpassing pre-pandemic levels for the first time, 0.9% above the February figure.

Advance was observed in the five activities surveyed, among which stand out transportation, support services for transportation and mailing activities (4.4%), with a cumulative annual increase of 8.7%, 2.8% above the February 2020 level. professional, administrative and complementary services (3.3%) and services rendered to families (8.8%) have reduced the distance from pre-pandemic figures, with -2.0% and -23.7%, respetively. Other services (4.7%) and information and communication (0.1%) are 1.0% and 2.6% above figures of February 2020.

The quarterly moving average reached 1.4% in the quarter ended February 2021 compared to the level of a month agor, and has been on an upward trend since July 2020.

Among the sectors, in the seasonally-adjusted series, three of the five activities recorded positive results in the month, with a highlight to transportation, support services for transportation and mailing activities (2.0%), followed by services rendered to families (0.8%). Negative rates in the month were those of Já other services (-0.2%) and information and communication (-0.1%).

In February 2021, services volume decreased by 2.0% from February 2020, twelfth negative rate for this indicator, but the least significant since March 2020 (-2.8%). Three of the five activities recorded decrease, and 38.0% of the 166 types of services surveyed, increase.

Among the sectors, services rendered to families (-28.1%) accounted for the most significant negative decrease, greatly affeted by decline in: revenue of companies in the restaurant segment; hotels;catering services; and physical conditioning activities.Other decreases came from professional, administrative and complementary services (-2.2%) and transportation, auxiliary services for transportation and mailing activities (-0.5%).

Decrease in professional, administrative and complementary services was to mainly due to: travel agencies; administration of loyalty programs; solutions in electronic payment; organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses and conventions; car rental; consulting in business management; and building cleaning.

In transportation, support services for transportation and mailing activities, decrease resulted from the reduced revenue of companies in the segments of air transportation, collective transportation and railway transportation (all for passengers); parking of vehicles; road concessionaries and long-distance sea transportation.

Positive contributions came from information and communication (2.7%) and other services (1.2%). Increase of information and communication was pushed, above all, by companies in the segments of portals, content providers and search tools; development and licensing of software; other telecommunication activities; and technical support, maintenance and other information technology services.  

Increase in other services was pushed by plastic material; security dealers; stock market administration and over-the-counter markets; support activities for forestry; and contract or commission-base administration of funds.

In terms of cumulative index in the year , there was a decrease by 3.5% from the same period in 2020, with negative rates in 38.6% of the 166 types of services investigated. Among the sectors, services rendered to families (-28.1%) accounted for the main negative contribution, pushed, to a great extent, by the decrease in revenue of companies in the segments of restaurant; hotels; catering and related services of ready-to-eat meals; and physical conditioning activities.

Other negative figures came from professional, administrative and complementary services (-5.0%), transportation, auxiliary services for transportation and mailing activities (-2.2%) and other services (-0.9%).

The decrease in professional, administrative and complementary services was due to travel agencies; administration of loyalty programs; solutions in electronic payment; organization, promotion and management of fairs, congresses and conventions; cleaning of buildings; car rental; and surveillance and private security activities.

Decline in transportation, support services for transportation and mailing activities resulted mainly from the reduced revenue of aviation companies, collective road transportation and railway transportation (all for passengers); parking of vehicles; and road concessionaries.

With a lower impact on the general index, other services (-0.9%) had a decrease in revenue in the segments of collection of non-dangerous domestic, urban or industrial residue; auxiliary insurance activities; and repair and maintenance of computers and peripheral devices.

The only positive contribution came from the information and communication subsector (2.1%), due, to a great extent, to the increased revenue of companies in the segments of portals, Internet providers and other information services on the Internet; development and licensing of software; other telecommunication activities; technical support and maintenance and other services in information technology.

Services grew in 18 of the 27 Federation Units

By area, 18 of the 27 Federation Units had an increase in services volume in February 2021, against the immediately previous month. The main contributions were those of São Paulo (4.3%), Minas Gerais (3.5%), Mato Grosso (14.8%) and Santa Catarina (3.9%). The Federal District (-5.1%) recorded the smallest decrease.

From February 2020, 17 of the 27 Federation Units recorded negative rates. The main negative contributions were those of Rio de Janeiro (-5.3%), Bahia (-14.0%), Paraná (-7.1%) and Federal District (-11.0%). The most relevant positive results were those of Minas Gerais (6.2%), Santa Catarina (9.9%), Amazonas (10.7%) and Mato Grosso (6.3%).

In terms of the cumulative index in the year, 18 of the 27 Federation Units recorded decreases from the same period in 2020. The main negative impacts came from São Paulo (-2.9%), Rio de Janeiro (-5.3%), Paraná (-8.0%), Bahia (-13.0%) and Rio Grande do Sul (-8.0%). Minas Gerais (4.0%) and Santa Catarina (7.5%) accounted for the most relative contributions.

Tourism activity index recorded an increase of 2.4% in February

In February 2021, the tourism activity index rose 2.4 % from the previous month, its second positive rate in a row, after a change of -0.1% in December 2020.

The tourism segment advanced 127.5% between May 2020 and February 2021, but it is still 39.2% behind the February level.

Most of (7) the 12 Federation Units surveyed followed expansion of national tourism activity (2.4%). The positive highlight was São Paulo (3.4%), followed by Minas Gerais (6.8%), Goiás (9.1%) and Pernambuco (4.9%); whereas the Federal District (-8.2%) and Bahia (-2.8%) recorded the main decreases.

The volume index of tourism activities in Brazil decreased by 31.1% from February 2020, twelfth negative rate in a row, mainly due to the reduced revenue of companies in the segments of: restaurants; air transportation; hotels; travel agencies; road transportation of passengers; catering and related services. In regional terms, all the 12 Federation Units where the indicator is surveyed recorded decrease in tourism services, with a highlight to São Paulo (-39.3%), followed by Rio de Janeiro (-29.1%), Minas Gerais (-27.2%), Bahia (-27.0%) and Paraná (-30.4%).

In the cumulative index in the year, the special aggregate of tourism activities fell 30.1% from the same period in 2020, due to the segments of restaurants; air transportation of passengers; hotels; road transportation of passengers; travel agencies; catering services. A total 12 areas surveyed recorded decrease, with a highlight to São Paulo (-38.5%), Rio de Janeiro (-28.6%), Minas Gerais (-30.2%), Paraná (-29.5%) and Bahia (-20.6%).
