Retail sales change by -0.1% in November

In November 2020, retail trade in the country was close to stability (-0.1%) versus seasonally=adjusted series, after six consecutive positive increases, a period when retail had cumulative gain of 32.2%. The quarterly moving average in the country was 0.4% in the quarter ended November. In the seasonally-adjusted series, , trade recorded a 3.4% increase from November 2019 to November 2020, and 8.4% from October 2020, sixth positive rate in a row.

Cumulative index in the year , increased 1.2% from the same period a year ago.

Já o Cumulative index in 12 months remained at 1.3% in November, pointing to stability from October.

In terms of extended retail trade, which includes vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, volume of sales increased 0.6% against October in 2020, seventh consectutive month of increase. The moving average of the quarter ended November (1.2%) shows deceleration in sales, when compared to the moving average in the quarter ended October (1.2%).

Volume of retail sales, in November 2020 against October (-0.1%), interrupted a sequence of six positive results in the retail trade indicator, initiated May 2020, after two months recording decrease due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Quarterly moving average decelerated, and changed by 0.4% in the quarter endd November, after registering 1.3% ended October.

Against the same month a year ago, the sixth positive rate in a row (3.4%) follows the smallest change, in terms of magnitude, in the last five months. Despite changes in the (negative) marginal results, cumulative figures in the last few months led to sales in November 2020 that were 0.1% below the record level in the series, October 2020.

The 0.9% increase in volume of sales of retail trade from October to November 2020, in the seasonally-adjusted series, thad positive rates in five of the eight activities surveyed: Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (5,6%), Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear (3.6%), Office, computer and communication material and equipment (3.0%), Pharmaceuticals, medical, orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (2.6%) and Other personal and domestic articles (1.4%).

On the other hand Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-2.2%), Fuels and lubricants (-0.4%) and Furniture and household appliances (-0.1%) recorded a decrease in sales from October 2020.

As for extended retail trade volume of sale for the Construction material sector recorded a decrease of 0.8% in November, agaisnt October, whereas Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces increased by 3.5%.

Five of the eight retail activities recorded decrease from November 2019

The comparison with November 2019 shows that retail trade increased 3.4%, despite negative rates in five of the eight activities surveyed. Even so, three sectors, by order of rate composition, accounted for the positive results of retail trade: Other personal and domestic articles (16.2%), Furniture and household appliances (17.8%) and Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (11.7%).

Hypermarkets and supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (-1.7%), Fuels and lubricants (-6.7%), Fabric, apparel and footwear (-4.9%) Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-15.3%) and Office and computer material and equipment (-9.9%).

In the case of extended retail trade, the increase of 4.1% against November 2019 was the sixth consecutive occurrence in volume of sales, in the interannual comparison, with increase of the activity Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces (0.8%) for the first time in eight months, whereas Construction material increased by 17.0%. The result of November reflected, mainly, the contribution from Other personal and domestic articles (1.6.p.), Construction material (1.5 p.p.) and Furniture and household appliances (1.4 p.p.).

The volume of sales of Other personal and domestic articles (which encompasses department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, Sporting goods stores, toy stores, etc.) increased 16.2% from November 2019 and accounted for the main positive impact on the overall retail trade rate (2.4 p.p). On the other hand, the activity recorded deceleration from October (18.5%). The cumulative index in the year (2.6%) was the second positive result after seven months of decrease. The cumulative index in twelve months (3.8%) increased by 1.6 p.p. against October (2.2%).

Furniture and household appliances increased 17.8% in volume of sales against November 2019, having accounted for the second positive impact (2.0 p.p.) on the overall retail trade rate in November 2020. The sector recorded its sixth positive rate for this indicator. In terms of the cumulative index in the year, having changed from 10.8% up to October to 11.6% up to November, sales in the sector accelerated. The indicator in the last twelve months was 12.3%, versus 11.0% in October.

The activity Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries recorded an increase of 11.7% in sales against November 2019, versus the same month a year ago, a figure below the October result (13.9%). That was the sixth positive rate for the sector. As for the cumulative index in the year up to November, having changed from 7.3% up to October to 7;7% in the month of reference, the index accelerated. In terms of the cumulative result over the last 12 months, growth rate for the sector increased from 7.4% in October to 7.6% in November.

The sector of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco, with a drop of 1.7% against the November 2019 result, recorded its first negative rate after nine consecutive months of positive results. The segment accounted for the biggest negative impact (-0.8 p.p) on the overall retail trade rate. The cumulative index in the year up to November (5.0%), versus the previous month (5.7%) shows deceleration. In the last 12 months, the sector had 4.1% in November, versus 4.5% in October.

Fuels and lubricants, with -6.7% Having dropped 11.4% in volume of sales against November 2019, accounted for the second main negative contribution (-0.6 p.p) to the overall rate. The activity has faced a period of high d the effects of the Covid 19 pandemic. In spite of that, the cumulative index in the year, having changed from%-10.4 up to October to%-10.0 up to November, shows slighter deceleration of sales. Considering the cumulative indicator in the last 12 months, there was a worse decrease (-9.2%) against the October figure (-8.6%).

The sector of Fabric, wearing apparel and footwear, in turn, fell by 4.9% in volume against November 2019, the ninth negative rate in this comparison. In terms of the cumulative index in the year, with a change from -27.6% in October to -25,1% in November, there was recovery. Considering the cumulative index in the 12 months, the sector fell by -21.3%, below the level in October (-20.7%).

The segment of Office, computer and communication material and equipment changed by 9.9% against November 2019, the eleventh month in a row with negative results. In terms of cumulative index in the year, the activity registered -16.6% up to November, at a level above that in the previous month (-17.3%). As for the cumulative index in 12 months (-14.9%), there was an increase in sales from October (-13.3%).

The activity Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery fell 15.3% against November 2019. The cumulative indicator in the year (-29.7%) up to November has remained negative since February 2020 (-1.3%). In terms of the cumulative index in 12 months, with a change from -26.0%, has remained negative March 2014 (-0.2%).

The sector of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces, having registered 0.8% in comparison with November 2019, had its first positive rate after eight consecutive months recording negative rates, in this comparison. The segment accelerated in terms of the cumulative index in the year, once in November, there was a decrease of 15.1%, above the October result (-16.7%). The cumulative index in 12 months, -13;2% up to November, decelerated in comparison with the cumulative index up to October (-12.8%).

With 17.0% against November, the segment of Construction material recorded its sixth positive rate in a row, in this comparison. The cumulative index up to November shows an increase in volume of sales (10.1%), compared to the month of October, with 9.4%. As a result, the cumulative index in the last 12 months, having changed from 8.6% in October to 9.7% in September, has been on an upward trend since June 2020.

Sales increased in 14 of the 27 Federation Units compared with the October figure

From October to November, in the seasonally-adjusted series, the national average rate of sales of retail trade decreased 0.1%, with a predominance of positive results in 14 of the 27 Federation Units, mainly in Acre (7.8%), Rondônia (7.2%) and Rio de Janeiro (4.2%). On the other hand, a total 13 of the 27 Federation Units had negative results, mainly: Paraíba (-3.5%), Amapá (-2.7%) and Paraná (-1.9%).

In the same comparison in extended retail trade, the change from October to November was 0.6%, with a predominance of positive results in 17 of the 27 Federation Units, the main highlights being: Acre (9.2%), Rondônia (4.2%) and Mato Grosso (2.8%). On the other hand, 10 Federation Units had negative results, especially: Tocantins (-5.7%), Amapá (-5.2%) and Goiás (-1.7 %).

Compared with November 2019, the change in sales of retail trade was of 3.4%, with positive results in 19 of the 27 Federation Units, mainly: Acre (20.2%), Pará (16.5%) and Piauí (14.6%). On the other hand, negative contributions came from 8 of the 27 Federation Units, the main ones being Tocantins (-7.5%), Paraíba (-5.1%) and Goiás (-5.0%). Concerning participation in the retail trade rate, highlights were: São Paulo (2.5%), Rio de Janeiro (6.5%) and Minas Gerais (5.7%).

Considering extended retail trade, against November 2019, the 4.1% increase counted on the predominance of positive results in 20 of the 27 Federation Units, mainly in Acre (22.4%), Rondônia (19.4%) and Pará (15.7%). Contributions with negative results were due to seven of the 27 Federation Units, the main highlights being: Bahia (-4.0%), Rio Grande do Sul (-3.6%) and Goiás (-1.4%).

Concerning the contribution to the extended retail rate, the highlights were São Paulo (4.3%), Minas Gerais (6.9%) and Santa Catarina (6.3%).
