Retail sales increase 0.9% in October

In the seasonally-adjusted series, volume of sales of the national retail trade increased 0.9% in October 2020 over September, the sixth consecutive positive rate since May. The quarterly moving average was 1.4%. In the seasonally-unadjusted series, the retail trade rose 8.3% over October 2019, the fifth positive rate in a row. In the cumulative index in the year, the retail increased 0.9% after remaining stable (0.0%) in September and dropping in the previous five months. The cumulative rate in 12 months stayed at 1.3%.

In the extended retail, which includes Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material, volume of sales increased 2.1% in relation to September 2020, the sixth positive change in a row. The moving average (2.4%) signaled a deceleration in the pace of sales. The extended retail grew 6.0% over October 2019, the fourth positive rate in a row. The cumulative index in the year stayed at -2.6% against -3.6% in the previous month. The cumulative index over the last 12 months repeated the September´s rate (-1.4%).

Volume of sales in the retail in October 2020 maintained the upward trend started in May 2020, after two months of drops due to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the seasonally-adjusted series, the retail trade increased once again the pace of sales between September and October.

Compared with the same month last year, the fifth consecutive positive rate was also the biggest change, in terms of magnitude, in the last five months. These figures caused the level of sales in October 2020 to rank as the record level in the time series, 0.9% above the previous level in September 2020.

Seven of eight activities grew in October in the seasonally-adjusted series.

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the increase of 0.9% in volume of sales in the retail trade between September and October 2020, registered positive rates in seven out of eight activities surveyed: Fabric, apparel and footwear (6.6%), Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (6.6%), Office, computer and communication material and equipment (3.7%), Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles, toiletries and cosmetics (2.3%), Other articles of personal and domestic use (1.9%), Fuels and lubricants (1.1%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (0.6%) positively influenced the overall result of the retail.

On the other hand, the sector of Furniture and household appliances (-1.1%) retreated its sales over September 2020.

Considering the extended retail trade, volume of sales of the sectors of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces and Construction material recorded positive changes in October compared with September: 4.8% and 0.2%.

Retail balanced positive and negative rates against October 2019

Compared with October 2019, the retail trade grew 8.3% with positive and negative rates balanced. The sectors of Furniture and household appliances (21.9%), Other articles of personal and domestic use (18.4%), Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries (13.8%) and Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (7.3%) positively impacted on the indicator.

The drops were due to Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery (-33.1%), Office, computer and communication material and equipment (-10.9%), fuels and lubricants (-5.4%) and Fabric, apparel and footwear (-2.6%).

In the case of the extended retail trade, while the activity of Vehicles and motorcycles, parts and pieces (-5.9%) was on the negative side, the sector of Construction material (20.9%) performed, in terms of the change in the rate, close to the biggest change for this indicator, in the activity of furniture and household appliances (21.9%).

The result of October 2020 mainly reflected the contribution of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco (3.5 p.p.), Other articles of personal and domestic use (2.4 p.p.) and Furniture and household appliances (2.1 p.p.).

Having advanced 7.3% over October 2019, the sector of Hypermarkets, supermarkets, food products, beverages and tobacco recorded the ninth consecutive positive rate in this comparison, gaining pace in relation to the September´s figure (4.3%). This segment exerted the biggest positive impact on the overall retail trade rate. Compared with the previous month (5.5%), the cumulative index in the year up to October (5.7%) gained pace close to stability. In the last 12 months, this sector posted 4.5% in October, sustaining a gain of pace that started in January 2020.

Having registered 18.4% in volume of sales over October 2019, the segment of Other articles of personal and domestic use, which comprises department stores, glasses shops, jewelry shops, sporting goods stores and toy stores, showed a pace similar to September (18.6%), exerting the second biggest positive contribution to the retail. The cumulative index up to October (0.7%) was the first one on the positive side after seven months of drops. It grew 0.9 p.p. over September (1.3%) in the cumulative index over the last 12 months (2.2%)

The segment of Furniture and household appliances grew 21.9% in volume of sales in relation to October 2019, exerting the third biggest positive impact on the overall retail trade rate of October 2020. This sector recorded the fifth positive rate for this indicator. Having changed from 9.4% up to September to 10.8% up to October, the cumulative index in the year showed an increase in the pace of sales. The indicator of the last 12 months accrued 11.0% in October, against 9.8% in September.

The activity of Pharmaceuticals, medical and orthopedic articles and toiletries posted 13.8% in sales against October 2019, the same figure as in September, the fifth positive rate in a row in relation to the same month of 2019. Having changed from 6.5% up to September to 7.2% in the reference month, the cumulative index in the year up to October showed a gain of pace. The cumulative in the last 12 months changed from 6.8% up to September to 7.4% in October.

In contrast, Fuels and lubricants (-5.4%) exerted the most intense negative contribution to the retail figure. This activity has received the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. When changing from -11.0% up to September to -10.4% up to October, the cumulative indicator in the year also showed a recovery. The cumulative index over the last 12 months stepped up the loss of pace (-8.6%) in relation to the previous month (-7.9%).

The sector of Fabric, apparel and footwear, in turn, registered -2.6% over October 2019, the eighth negative rate in this comparison. This activity exerted the second biggest negative impact on the overall retail trade rate (Table 1). Having changed from -30.5% in September to -27.6% in October, the cumulative index in the year up to the reference month gained pace. The indicator of the last 12 months recorded -20.4%, a level similar to that of the previous month (-20.7%).

The segment of Office, computer and communication material and equipment fell 10.9% over October 2019, the tenth consecutive month on the negative side. In the cumulative index up to the reference month, this activity posted -17.4% until October, a higher level than that of the previous month (-18.2%). The cumulative indicator over the last 12 months (-13.4%) increased the pace of drop in the sales in relation to September (-12.1%).

The activity of Books, newspapers, magazines and stationery dropped 33.1% over October 2019. The cumulative indicator in the year also dropped (-30.7%) until October and remained on the negative side since February 2020 (-1.3%). Having changed from -24.3% to -25.7%, the cumulative index over the last 12 months  remained on the negative side since March 2014 (-0.2%).

Having registered -5.9% over October 2019, the sector of Vehicles, motorcycles, parts and pieces recorded the eighth consecutive negative rate, exerting the biggest negative contribution to the extended retail this month (-1.4 p.p.). Compared with September (-18.1%), the cumulative indicator in the year up to October (-16.8%) gained pace. Having recorded -12.8% up to October, the cumulative index over the last 12 months lost pace in relation to the cumulative rate up to September (-11.6%).

Having posted 20.9% over October, after September (31.4%), the segment of Construction material registered the fifth consecutive positive rate in this comparison. Compared with September (7.9%), the cumulative indicator in the year up to October gained pace in the sales (9.4%). Having changed from 7.2% in September to 8.6% in October, the cumulative indicator over the last 12 months maintained the growth trend started in June 2020.

Sales rise in 22 of 27 Federation Units compared with October

In the seasonally-adjusted series, the national average rate of sales of the retail trade increased 0.9% between September and October 2020, with positive figures prevailing in 22 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Bahia (3.5%), Piauí (3.1%) and Mato Grosso do Sul (2.9%). On the other hand, five out of 27 Federation Units pressed negatively, highlighted by: Tocantins (-5.4%), Roraima (-2.2%) and Pará (-0.7%).

In the same comparison in the extended retail trade, the change between September and October was an increase of 2.1%, with positive figures prevailing in 18 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Paraíba (3.6%), Rio de Janeiro (2.9%) and São Paulo (2.8%). On the other hand, nine out of 27 Federation Units pressed negatively, highlighted by Espírito Santo (-2.4%).

 Compared with October 2019, the change in the sales of the national retail trade was 8.3%, with positive figures prevailing in 26 out of 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Piauí (23.0%), Acre (18.2%) and Maranhão (17.8%). In contrast, Tocantins (-5.7%) pressed negatively, according to Graph 6. Concerning the share in the composition of the retail rate, the positive highlights were: Minas Gerais (12.3%), São Paulo (7.0%) and Rio de Janeiro (5.5%).

Considering the extended retail trade, the increase of 6.0% over October 2019 was followed by positive figures in the 27 Federation Units, highlighted by: Rondônia (18.6%), Amazonas (18.2%) and Amapá (17.5%). Concerning the share in the composition of the extended retail trade, the highlights were: Minas Gerais (10.8%), Santa Catarina (11.0%) and São Paulo (3.5%).
