PNAD COVID19: 3.4% of the employed population were away from work due to social distancing in the third week of September

The week of September 13 to 19 was stable in relation to the previous week (3.7%) and well below the first week of the survey, from May 3 to 9 (19.8%).The unemployed population (13.3 million persons) and the unemployment rate (13.7%) did not change significantly compared to the previous week (13.5 million and 14.1%, respectively). In the same period, the number of persons with flu-like symptoms increased from 9.7 million (or 4.6% of the population) to 9.1 million (or 4.3%), remaining statistically stable.
PNAD COVID19 estimated the employed population in the country at 83.7 million in the week of September 13 to 19, with stability in relation to the previous week (82.6 million people) and the week of May 3 to 9 (83, 9 million people).
The employed population not away from work, estimated at 78.2 million people, remained stable in relation to the previous week (77.2 million) but increased compared to the week of May 3 to 9 (63.9 million). Among these people, 7.8 million (or 10.0% of the employed population not away) worked from home. This contingent was stable compared to the previous week (8.2 million or 10.7%). In relation to the week of May 3 to 9, there was stability in absolute numbers (8.6 million) and decrease in percentage (13.4%).
The employment-to-population ratio (49.1%) increased compared to the previous week (48.4%) and remained stable in relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (49.4%).
The informality rate proxy (33.6%) was stable in relation to the previous week (34.3%), but decreased compared to the week of May 3 to 9 (35.7%).
About 2.8 million (or 3.4% of the employed population) were away from work due to social distancing. This contingent was stable compared to the previous week (3.0 million or 3.7%) and fell compared to the week of May 3 to 9 (16.6 million or 19.8% of the employed).
The unemployed population (13.3 million persons) was stable compared to the previous week (13.5 million people) and grew in relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (9.8 million). As a result, the unemployment rate (13.7%) was stable in relation to the previous week (14.1%) and increased compared to the first week of May (10.5%).
The labor force participation rate (56.9%) in the week of September 13 to 19 was stable compared to the previous week (56.3%) and the first week of May (55.2%).
The population outside the labor force (who was neither working nor looking for work) was 73.6 million people, remaining stable compared to the previous week (74.6 million) and the week of May 3 to 9 ( 76.2 million). Of them, about 25.6 million people (or 34.7% of the population outside the labor force) said that they would like to work . This contingent was stable compared to the previous week (26.0 million or 34.9%) and fell in relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (27.1 million or 35.5%).
About 15.4 million people out of the force who would like to work and did not seek work, did not do so because of the pandemic or because they did not find a job where they lived. They accounted for 20.9% of people out of strength. This contingent fell in relation to the previous week, but there was stability in percentage terms (16.3 million or 21.8%). Compared to the week of May 3 to 9 (19.1 million or 25.1%), there was a decrease in both indicators.
6.3 million students had no school activities during the week
In the week of September 13-19, the country had about 46.3 million students attending schools or universities. Of these, 13.7% (or 6.3 million) had no school activities in the third week of September. This contingent was statistically stable in relation to the previous week (6.8 million or 14.7% of students), but fell compared to the week from June 28 to July 4 (9.0 million or 20.0% of students) .
Among the 39.5 million students who had school activities in the third week of September, 26.2 million (or 66.3%) had activities five days in the week, holding steady compared to the previous week (25.5 million, or 65.4%).
About 84.4 million people stayed at home and only left when necessary in the week of September 13th to 19th, which is equivalent to 39.9% of the population. This contingent was stable compared to the previous week (85.6 million or 40.5% of the population). The share of the population that was strictly isolated (16.0% or 33.8 million) fell in relation to the previous week (16.7% or 35.3 million). The number of those who did not follow any restrictions (3.1% or 6.5 million) was stable compared to the previous week (2.9% or 6.1 million). The number of those who reduced contact but continued leaving home and/or being visited (85.7 million or 40.5%) increased compared to the previous week (83.3 million or 39.4%).
Number of people with flu-like symptoms remains stable
In the week of September 13-19, PNAD COVID19 estimated that 9.1 million people (or 4.3% of the country's population) had at least one of the 12 symptoms associated with the flu syndrome (fever, cough, sore throat , breathing difficulties, headache, chest pain, nausea, stuffy or runny nose, fatigue, eye pain, loss of smell or taste and muscle pain) which are investigated by the survey. This contingent was stable compared to the previous week (9.7 million people or 4.6% of the country's population) and decreased compared to the week of May 3 to 9 (26.8 million or 12.7%).
Approximately 2.2 million people (or 24.0% of those with any symptoms) sought health facilities in search of care (health centers, family health teams, UPA Emergency Care Units, SUS (public) Emergency Rooms or Hospitals or, even, private outpatient clinics, emergency rooms or hospitals). This contingent was stable compared to the previous week (2.3 million or 23.6%). In relation to the week of May 3 to 9 (3.7 million or 13.7%), there was a decrease in absolute numbers and an increase in percentage terms.
About 594,000 people sought care at public, private or military hospitals in the week of September 13-19. This contingent was stable compared to the previous week (606 thousand) but fell compared to the week of May 3 to 9 (1.1 million). Among those who sought hospital care, 74 thousand (9.6%) were hospitalized. This contingent remained stable compared to the previous week (108 thousand or 13.3%) and the week from 3 to 9 May (97 thousand or 9.1%).
