This proportion was statistically stable in relation to the previous week (5.2%) and well below the first week of the survey, from 3 to 9 May (19.8%). 7.3 million students (or 15.9% of the total) had no school activities this week. This figure was statistically stable compared to the previous week (7.6 million or 16.6% of students).

PNAD COVID19 estimated at 82.7 million persons the employed population in the country in the week of reference from August 16 to 22, with stability against the previous week (82.1 million metric tons0 and a decrease against May 3 to 9 (83.9 million persons). 

The employed population not away from work, estimated at 75.9 million persons, was stable against the previous week (75.1 million) but increased against May 3 to 9 (63.9 million). Among those person, 8.3 million (or 10.9% of the employed population not away from work) worked remotely. That figure was stable against the previous week (8.3 million or 11.1%). Against May 3 to 9 there was stability in absolute figures (8.6 million) and a decrease, in percentage terms (13.4%).  

The employment-population ratio (48.6%) was stable against the previous week (48.2%) and fell against May 3 to 9 (49.4%). 

Informality rate (33.4%) was stable from the previous week   (34.1%), but fell against May 3 to 9 (35.7%). 

About 4.0 million persons (or 4.8% of the employed population) were away from work due to social distancing. That figure was statistically stable against the previous week (4.3 million or 5.2%), but fell against May 3 to 9 (16.6 million or 19.8% of the employed ones).

The unemployed population (12.6 million persons) remained stable against the previous (12.9 million persons), but was bigger than in May 3 to 9 (9.8 million). As a result, unemployment rate was 13.2% for the period August 16 to 22, with stability against the previous week (13.6%) and an increase against the first week of May (10.5%). 

The rate of participation in the workforce (56.0%) from August 16 to 22 was stable against the previous week (55.7%) and the first week of May (55.2%). 

The population out of the workforce (those who were not working of searching for work) was 75.0 million persons, remaining stable against the previous week (75.4 million) and also against May 3 to 9 (76.2 million). In this population, a total 26.9 million persons (or 35.9% of those out of the workforce) said they would like to work. That figure was stable against the one in the previous week (27.1 million or 35.9%) and from May 3 to 9 (27.1 million or 35.5%). 

About 17.1 million persons out of the workforce who would like to work did not do it due to the pandemic or because they did not find a position in the locality where they lived. That group corresponded to 22.9% of the persons out of the workforce.

This figure remained stable against the previous week (17.7 million or 23.5%), but recorded a decrease against May 3 to 9 (19.1 million or 25.1%). 

7.3 million students had no school activities during the week 

From August 16 to 22, the country had about 46.0 million students attending school or university. Among those, 15.9% (or 7.3 million) had no school activities in the third week of August. That figure was statistically stable against the previous week (7.6 million or 16.6% of the students) and fell against June 28 to July 4 (9.0 million or 20.0% of the students). 

Among the 37.7 million students who had school activities in the third week of August, 25.0 million (or 66.2%) had activities five days per week, and remained stable against the previous week (24.3 million, or 66.0%).

About 87.6 million persons regularly stayed home and went out only for basic necessities between August 16 and 22, which is equivalent to 41.5% of the population. That figure was stable against the previous week (86.4 million or 409% of the population). Those persons who were in strict isolation (19.7% or 41.6 million) fell against the previous week (21.0% or 44.4 million). Those not following restrictive measures (2.1% or 4.5 million) was stable against the previous (2.1% or 4.4 million). The number of those who reduced social contact but were still going out or paying visits to others (76.4 million or 36.2%) increased against the previous week (74.5 million or 35.3%).

2.8 million persons with flu-like symptoms sought health assistance at a health establishment

For the period August 16 to 22, PNAD COVID19 estimated that  12.4 million persons or (or 5.9% of the population in the country) had at least of the 12 flu-like symptoms that are investigated by the survey (fever, cough, a sore throat, difficulty to breathe, a headache, pain in the chest, nausea, a stuffy or runny nose, fatigue, pain in the eyes, loss of smell or taste and muscular pain). That figure remained stable from the preceding week (12.0 million or 5.7% of the population in the country) and way below that in the period May 3 to 9  (26.8 million or 12.7%).

About 2.8 million persons (or 22.5% of those reporting any symptoms) sought medical assistance at a health establishment (community healthcare unit, family health team, UPAs, SUS emergency care units or hospitals, ambulatory/office care, private emergency care unit or hospital). This figure was stable against the previous week (2.7 million or 22.8%). Against May 3 to 9 (3.7 million or 13.7%), there was decrease in absolute figures and increase in percentage terms. 

Approximately 739 thousand persons sought medical assistance at a public, private or military hospital between a August 16 and 22. That figure was stable against the previous week (669 thousand) but recorded a decrease between May 3 and 9 (1.1 million). Among persons seeking assistance at a hospital, 127 thousand (17.2%) were hospitalized, a stable figure from the preceding week (116 thousand or 17.4%) and from May 3 to 9 (97 thousand or 9.1%).
