Enterprise Pulse Survey: 37.5% of the enterprises reported negative effects of the pandemic in the 2nd half of July

A total 37.5% of the 3.0 million enterprises in operation in the 2nd half of July reported negative effects of the pandemic on their businesses, whereas 36.3% observed small or no effect and 26.1%, positive ones. 

Enterprises in the Services sector reported most negative effects (42.9%), with a highlight to Professional, administrative and complementary services (53.8%). In the Trade segment, 36.5% reported small or no effects and, in Construction, 55.4% did. In industry, 35.8% observed small or no effects; 33.6%, positive effects and for 30.6%, effects were negative.

The results in this fourth round of the Enterprise Pulse Survey present effects perceived by enterprises in operation in the second half of July. The survey monitors the main effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the activities of non-financial enterprises and is part of the IBGE's Experimental Statistics. Negative effects of the pandemic were reported by 37.6% of the small-sized enterprises, 34.4% of the medium-sized enterprises and 37.8% of the large-sized ones. By Major Region, effects were negative for 49.6% of the enterprises in the Northeast, 44.7% in the Central West, 36.7% in the South, 33.3% in the Southeast and 29.4% in the North.

Perceived effects on sales of products or services were small or null for 37.1% of the enterprises. Another 34.4% reported a decrease in sales, whereas 28.4% reported increase in sales during the pandemic. Decrease was reported by 34.4% of the small-sized enterprises, 33.0% of the medium sized ones and by 26.4% of large-sized enterprises. In large-sized ones a highlight is the total 46.6% reporting small or no effects.

Among the sectors, 43.6% of the Construction enterprises, 38.6% of the Services enterprises and 29.5% of the Trade ones reported decreases in sales. By segment, decrease in sales was observed in Trade of vehicles, pieces and motorcycles (44.3%), Information and communication services (42.8%) and Other services (41.2%).

In the second half of July, 55.0% of the enterprises in operation had no significant changes in their production or customer service capacity, 33.1% reported difficulties and 11.6%, these activities were easier. Also,  45.3% had difficulty to contact suppliers and 44.8% observed no significant change.

Almost half of the companies in operation (49.7%) had no significant difficulties in making regular payments in the period analyzed. Another 38.9% did.

As for the employed population, 84.6% of the enterprises in operation (2.5 million) had a bigger number of employees in the second half of July against that in the previous 15 days, and 7.9% reported reduction  of the staff.

Among the 242 thousand enterprises reducing the number of employees, in 68.4% the staff was reduced by up to 25%. That was not related to either size or Major Region.

Among the actions taken to reduce effects of the pandemic, a highlight is the adoption and continuation of prevention and extra hygiene-related actions, reported by 93.0% of the enterprises. In addition, 34.9% maintained work from home (remote work) and 20.3% brought employees’ vacations forward.

About 29.1% of the enterprises changed their method for the delivery of products or services, whereas 16.2% launched or started to trade new products and/or services in the second half of July.

It is estimated that 30.5% of the enterprises postponed the payment or regular taxes and 11.4% were granted credit line to pay salaries.

Among the enterprises adopting such measures, approximately 30.2%, mostly in large-sized enterprises, reported feeling supported by governmental authorities. Among the ones that postponed the payment of taxes, that percentage was 60.8% and, among those being granted a credit line to pay salaries, 87.4%.
