PNAD COVID19: 7.1% of employed population was away from work due to social distancing in the fourth week of July

This proportion remained statistically stable in relation to the previous week (7.5%) and dropped against the first week of the survey, May 3-9 (19.8%).

PNAD COVID19 estimated the Brazilian employed population at 81.2 million in the week of July 19-25, remaining stable in relation to the previous week (81.8 million persons) and dropping in relation to the week of May 3-9 (83.9 million persons).

The employed population not away from work was estimated at 72.3 million persons, remaining stable over the previous week (72.5 million) and increasing against the week of May 3-9 (63.9 million). Among these persons, 8.3 million (or 11.5%) worked remotely. This contingent remained stable against the previous week (8.2 million or 11.3%) and, in absolute numbers, remained stable in relation to the week of May 3-9 (8.6 million), though dropping in percentage terms over that week (13.4%).

The employment-population ratio was 47.7%, remaining stable against the previous week (48.0%) and dropping in relation to the week of May 3-9 (49.4%).

The proxy of the informality rate was 33.5%, representing an increasing in relation to the previous week (32.5%), but retreating against the week of May 3-9 (35.7%).

Nearly 5.8 million (7.1% of the employed population) were away from work due to social distancing. This contingent remained stable in relation to the previous week (6.2 million or 7.5% of the employed population) and fell against the week of May 3-9 (16.6 million or 19.8% of those employed).

The unemployed population was estimated at 12.9 million persons, remaining stable against the previous week (12.4 million) and rising over the week of May 3-9 (9.8 million). As a result, the unemployment rate stayed at 13.7% for the period between July 19-25, remaining stable in relation to the previous week (13.1%) and increasing over the first week of May (10.5%).

The workforce participation rate stayed at 55.3% in the week of July 19-25, remaining stable in relation to the previous week (55.2%) and in comparison with the first week of May (55.2%).

The population out of the workforce – that was neither working nor looking for a job – was of 76.0 million persons, remaining stable in relation to the previous week (76.2 million) and against the week of May 3-9 (76.2 million). In this population, nearly 28.0 million persons (or 36.9% of the population out of the workforce) reported that they would like to work. This contingent remained stable in relation to the previous week (28.0 million or 36.7%) and against the week of May 3-9 (27.1 million or 35.5%).

Nearly 18.5 million persons out of the workforce, who would like to work and did not look for a job, did not that due to the pandemic or for not finding a job in the locality where they lived. They corresponded to 24.4% of the persons out of the workforce. This contingent remained stable in relation to the previous week (18.6 million or 24.4%) and in comparison with the week of May 3-9 (19.1 million or 25.1%).

3.3 million persons with symptoms of flue-like syndrome searched for a health establishment

In the week of July 19-25, PNAD COVID19 estimated at 13.3 million persons (or 6.3% of the Brazilian population) had at least one out of the 12 symptoms associated to the flu-like syndrome (fever, cough, sore throat, difficulty to breathe, headache, chest pain, nausea, stuffy or runny nose, fatigue, eye pain, loss of smell or taste and muscle pain) which are investigated by the survey. This contingent remained stable against the previous week (13.8 million or 6.5% of the population) and dropped in relation to the week of May 3-9 (26.8 million or 12.7%).

Nearly 3.3 million persons (or 24.3% of those who had any symptom) searched for a health establishment (health centers, family health teams, UPAs, SUS medical centers or hospitals or even private ambulatories/offices, medical centers or hospitals). This contingent remained stable in relation to the previous week (3.3 million or 23.4%) and, in absolute numbers, – though increasing in percentage terms – against the week of May 3-9 (3.7 million or 13.7%). More than 82% of these attendances were in the public health network.

Between July 19 and 25, 238 thousand persons (7.3%) who had symptoms of flu-like syndrome searched for care in private or military ambulatories or offices. This proportion represented a stability both in the comparison with the previous week (302 thousand or 9.3%) and in relation to the first week of May (320 thousand or 8.7%).

Nearly 1.1 million persons looked for care in public, private or military hospitals in the week of July 19-25. This contingent remained statistically stable in relation to the previous week (912 thousand) and against the week of May 3-9 (1.1 million).

Among those who looked for care, 159 thousand (14.5%) were hospitalized. It also remained stable against the previous week (135 thousand or 14.8%) and over the week of May 3-9 (97 thousand or 9.1%).
